    The two things that always blows my mind with high end turntables are: #1 no dust cover #2 no full or semi automatic operation. Yes wow, that is defiantly a conversation starter piece of gear and im sure it sounds super good. -Thanks for sharing !

    Just like a very high end watch! A $25 watch can keep time just as well as a million dollar watch! The difference is in the fact that the whole goal of the high end watch’s movement is to try and make it as complicated as possible! No joke! Not even talking about the jewels or metal used! Just the gears and such! It seems the same can be said with these type of ultra high end audio products!🤯🤪

    @5:02
    "The needle is the Clearaudio Goldfinger..."
    It is not a needle. It is a stylus.
    Needles are for sewing, for donating blood, and for flu shots.
    @6:24
    "This is a platter underneath..."
    The two platters are physically disconnected from each other. They do not touch each other.
    Yet, when one spins, they both spin.
    This is due to them being married via magnets (and the magnets never touch).
    The motor turns the lower platter, via a belt.
    The lower platter turns the upper platter, via its magnetic pull.
    This design separates as much motor related vibration as possible from reaching the upper platter, which, in turn, keeps motor vibration from reaching the stylus.
    By the way, the Clearadio turntable that sat directly to the right of the Statement turntable is also a dream turntable -- just a smaller dream. I believe it is the Innovation model (with only the Master Innovation model before you get to the Statement model).
    I am curious as to which tone-arm and cartridge they have installed on the Innovation model.
    Musical Surroundings is the distributor for Clearaudio.
    Garth Leerer is the President of Musical Surroundings.
    I met Garth, at an audio show in a New Jersey high-end store. He is very knowledgeable and personable.
    He brought with him a Clearaudio Goldfinger cartridge. He installed it in the room's AMG turnstable's tone-arm. It replaced a very good Clearaudio cartridge, that was a bit lower down their line (the Goldfinger is their flagship cartridge).
    I had heard that AMG turntable before and after the cartridge change. That Goldfinger cartridge is really good. Yes, it is expensive. But you are going to get a lot for that $$.

    As always, you are honest and transparent, and you are aware of differences in taste, and always describe the listening experience in ways I have never heard before. Very educational, I have learned things about my own system, but even more importantly, you simplified my life when I was shopping for equipment. I was impressed that you put the time stamp up so people could skip to the turntable review. You didn't want to waste people's time, (but I heard it all). But I also note how careful you are not to ever appear to be selling. Your reviews could be on the App "Calm", because of your relaxed style, which is folksy with a Canadian, Asian (Hong Kong?) accent, LOL.

You know, I was always very skeptical about high end audio but since you showed us the Raidho D3, I become curios and listened to some of the sound demos Raidho here on RUclips with my IE800 and omg, D5.1 it pulls my heart everytime I listen to the demos. Please if you can make a review and demo. I am sure one of friends of your friends has them. Cheers.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  5 лет назад

      The problem with the D5.1 is the size. My friend was considering upgrading his D3 to the D4.1 but size was the problem. If you were able to hear it in person, you will see that the speed on those speakers are amazing. The bass coming out of those diamond woofers are punchy and lighting fast. If you ever go to an audioshow, you will find the same feel with the Magico high end speakers too because they also use diamond woofers.

    I encountered a review on youtube claiming that 250$ DAC is just as good as 2000$ and on a blind test its impossibe to guess what DAC is currently playing because they sound equally good.
    Would you accept the challange and film a video of a blind (!) test of some well reviewed DAC as the qutest (priced 1900$ now) vs a cheaper one like geshelli enog2 (priced 250$ now)?
    Any result will be super enlightening!
    Thank you and best regards!

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  5 лет назад

      Well, I think those people who tried it absolutely believe what they say and I am not here to discredit them. My experience tells me there is a difference and you do need a high end system to be really able to tell the difference. I would say just buy what you can afford comfortably and don't think about it much. I would just say, the higher end ones sound more analog than the budget one. I gone thru over 10 dacs at difference price point.

    • @igaldins
      @igaldins 5 лет назад

      @@ThomasAndStereo I have to say that discredit anybody is not my intention by no means.
      It makes sence that you need a good system to hear better the differences between DACs but I was pretty sure that one of the best modern DACs for the money that costs 1900$ (qutes) will sound better then 250$ DAC even on a low end hi-fi.
      By the way, the most analog digital source I heard is the Luxman d-06 CD player. Not a cheap CD :)

    Believe it or don't, but a childhood chum who now lives in one of Manhattan's newer slip-formed reinforced-concrete supertall stilts is adamant that his CA Statement is in some way susceptible to mechanical resonance from the building itself - and, somehow, from the building's tuned-mass damper many floors above - both of which ostensibly cause a spurious low-freq foghorn-sounding artifact.
    As if this didn't seem delusional enough, he followed up by swearing on a stack of Bibles (just like 3rd Grade) that the salesman, on a visit to follow up the installation of the CAS (and after more than a few single-malt refreshments), actually responded in the affirmative to his complaint by stating that other clients who lived in these new supertall reinforced-concrete buildings had the same problem, and then suggested that my pal should "go to Home Depot" and "get some of those foam noise-suppression panels" in order to "damp it out," and, if that didn't work, to ask the building management to blow acoustic foam into the pipe races and utility spaces closest to his residence.
    I was about to ask him if he or the sycophantic salesman had any idea how this supposed infrasonic structural groaning was inducing his CAS to make like the Nantucket Lightship, but then I remembered that this guy also had, decades ago, a paving brick atop his Rotel CD Player - and that he'd painted the circumferences of all his CDs with matt green model paint.
    -When the Emperor says it is midnight at noon, the wise men reply "Behold, the stars!"
    Regards,
    Kev
    ps.
    I seem to recall that the brick was supposed to suppress any vibration reaching the CD player, acting as a cost-free alternative to mechanical isolation - and that the green nail polish was believed to absorb and redirect any scattered laser light, thus improving the signal.
    pps.
    I never fell for any of this nonsense, although I confess I tried to sharpen razor blades in a pasteboard pyramid.
    -K.

Many turntables are just very safe and dialed back in sound.

      Not as expensive as I thought, Thomas.
      In many respects then, the philosophy (thinking) behind this system is 'old school' i.e. max out on the front end as the amp and speakers will only reproduce the signal they receive.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  5 лет назад +1

      I prefer the Sacha way more than the Sabrina. Jay chose specific tracks to showcase the power of the bass and it did deliver. I like the sound of the speakers as it falls into the category of speakers I like. It had authority and it could have even better with more power. The 8900 mcintosh was pushed to the limit as we were looking at the meters and it was maxed out. It still sounded good though. Not bright, not slow, they got many things right.

    • @benjamincouillard5906
      @benjamincouillard5906 5 лет назад

      Actually, they ARE bookshelf speakers. Wilson Audio designed these specifically to go onto bookshelves or a table. The Wilson Duette is their standmount speaker, the TuneTot is really a bookshelf. From their website on the TuneTot page :
      « Environmental music systems are increasingly part of contemporary lifestyles. Another ground-breaking Special Applications product, the Wilson Audio Duette, successfully addressed the challenges caused by near boundary placement. Placing a loudspeaker on a desktop, bookshelf, counter top, or a credenza has meant accepting serious sonic compromises. Interactions and resonances from the furniture or shelf on which the loudspeaker rests are a source of audible distortion and colorations-deleterious factors most loudspeaker designers simply accept. The Wilson Way™ demanded a new look at the problem.
      The Special Applications Engineering team spent months researching the interactions between TuneTot and the surface upon which it is installed. It quickly became clear that assumptions surrounding environmental resonance control needed to be re-examined. For these installations, the challenges presented are very different from what exists for a typical floor-standing loudspeaker spiked to the floor-problems that require a different strategy. A series of accessories were developed specifically to address furniture-born resonances endemic to these types of installations.»

    The problem with this type of design is in the bearing. Since you can't have a traditional "stick in a hole" bearing with a thrust pad meets ball end, this turntable needs the shaft to go through the hole to hold the bottom platter so it has to resort to angular contact bearing which is a kind of bearing that requires multiple balls in circular arrangement that ends up creating more noise. You practically lose the simplicity and elegance of a single ball bearing. And since it's driven by magnetic field, which is compliant, it's like having an extra rubber belt in a belt drive turntable. And it would create another lag time which can smear the sound and timing. At least in the EAR Disc Master turntable, it uses gear belt to avoid extra elasticity. The selling point is a non-contact bearing but it actually created more problems over traditional bearing than realized. It's Rube Goldberg and it's a visual monstrosity. No thanks! Peter Suchy hasn't come up with one single original idea without copying someone else!

  • @HP_____
    @HP_____ 4 года назад

    Just because it's noncontact drive does not mean it is not compromised. The platter now cannot employ the traditional stick-in-hole type of bearing and must use some form of angular contact bearing to allow the shaft to protrude to hold the bottom platter. Traditional turntables have a shaft with a ball point contact. The Statement bearing now has multiple pressure contact points. You're trading one thing for another. Just like any physics in the universe, there's no free lunch.
    The magnetic force is to replace the belt but belt and magnetic field are compliant. So you have a belt drive table driving another platter via magnetic force, so it's compliance on top of compliance. How is that speed stable? Not impressed.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  4 года назад

      I have no idea but maybe they have something in their brochure to answer some of the questions? I am pretty sure stable speed is their top priority?

    • @HP_____
      @HP_____ 3 года назад

      I am sure there's a servo or speed sensor system in place for a turntable of that price. But it's inelegant. It appears most audiophile turntables are about the shiny platter and the decorated plinth but audiophiles hardly pay attention to the motor. In fact most of them employ a $20 toy motor!

    The best? No...not even close!. The most outragiously bling outragiously space swallowing "look at me" TTs, but best sounding? No way! The better decks and mostly likely better value are ones including the older EMT transcrisption decks, new acoustic signature decks, the TW Raven, and the more expensive Airforce 1 and Continium decks. Oh....Panzerholst is not bullet proof unless really thick. A 6.5 or 30 cal would rip through several inches of it but thats nothing to do with audio.
    Not impressed. All of this kit I've probably heard. None of it would be what I'd spend that sort of money on especially the speakers. Sophias are ok but the watt puppies are boomy and disjointed. This is a bling system that could be bettered at half the cost! Meant in the nicest possible way!
