Regine's mother, Alice, died in a car crash. So Regine wrote this song and dedicated it to the memory of her mother. That's sweet. Regine, I gotta tell you, your mother would be so proud of you!
Hi! I'd like to comment on this matter a bit. While the song is indeed about Marie-Alice Chassagne, I believe that the reason for her passing hasn't been made public as yet. Unless you have access to a source, which would be totally possible and I'd stand corrected. While a car accident would appear to add a layer of meaning to the song or shed light on its meaning, I don't believe it is necessarily the case. Here's what I know about Alice's passing (not much): "Chassagne 'Chiappini' Marie-Alice, wife of Stanley Chassagne, died at her home in Saint-Lambert, February 28, 1999, at the age of 51 years. Besides her husband, she is survived by her daughters Régine and Norah, her sister Françoise and many relatives and friends" www.findagrave.com/memorial/108120292/marie_alice-chassagne I've been a fan of the group since back in 2011, also a huge admirer of this beautiful song and the fact that it closes one of my favorite albums of all times. Cheers
BeardedSailor1 I have to imagine it is fairly emotionally taxing for her to perform it given what it is about.. Not the kind of thing you necessarily want to reflect on over and over publicly. Beautiful song and rendition nonetheless.
I think my favourite thing about this song is when her voice breaks, especially at 4:20, which they kept in the studio version as well. The genuine, palpable emotion in this song is unlike any I have heard before and frequently is able to bring me to tears.
Another good case to why autotune is often a bad thing, should arguably be used only when necessary, and definitely shouldn't be a standard in the music industry.
A day after this comment, my grandmother died. I had this song in my mind the whole time during the funeral. I thank Arcade Fire for comforting me with their music.
Her and Win have such interesting, yet incredible voices. Nothing particular technical or profound by means of skill. But they're so good. Everyone in Arcade Fire adds something raw like that. I guess that's just Arcade Fire. :P
My favorite off Funeral and one of my favorites from Arcade Fire. This is also one of the best live versions I've seen so far. Régine's vocals are spot on (: I also wonder why Win hardly turns around only during this song.
Well, not just owning this song, but she's literally singing about her mother's death (Alice). I don't know if I'm being captain obvious and every Arcade Fire fan knows it already, but just saying, she might be owning this song in the fullest sense of the word, what matters more is that she's talking about her mother's death here in my opinion, that's an even better reason to not fool around
As a bass player you really gotta nail that drop with your drummer. Especially if bass isn't your primary instrument visual communication is very helpful.
When I first saw them live I couldn't stop the tears from flowing on this song... incredible emotional impact, and the build-up in intensity towards the end is out of this world. And some people wonder why we go bazooka over this band!
I was there,at this magical show. This time is print in my heart. An amazing human and spiritual communion time. A big love of my life is dying and this song support me and help me to don't forget love and life never end... My whole life, I've been learning...
It is my understanding that Win's grandfather, Alvino Rey, also passed on in 2004, and was also a big reason (along with Regine's loss) that their first album was named 'Funeral' ... Alvino was famous in his day, being considered the inventor of the electric pedal steel guitar, and of designing Gibson's first guitar pickup. among other things .... He looks just like Win ....
What is the English translation of what Regine says at the start of this clip...3 wonderful songs in a row at this show Haiti/Bad Vibrations/then this, which i think is the best performance of In The Backseat...I think Patty Smyth/David Gilmour/Elvis may be the only other musicians who rival the overall talent/presence/focus/beauty/charisma,etc..the virtues Regine exudes ...

Gui Porto your grandma is looking over you and loves you🙏

and people try to say regine can't sing...
she is so awesome.
She sort of sounds like early Bjork (unbridled energy).
My favorite off Funeral and one of my favorites from Arcade Fire.
This is also one of the best live versions I've seen so far. Régine's vocals are spot on (:
I also wonder why Win hardly turns around only during this song.
probably just to emphasize that regine owns this song in the fullest sense of the word

Yeah, fully aware that she's talking about her mother in this song lol.

Achingly beautiful. gorgeous phrasing.
When I first saw them live I couldn't stop the tears from flowing on this song... incredible emotional impact, and the build-up in intensity towards the end is out of this world. And some people wonder why we go bazooka over this band!
those vocals are just beautiful

A big love of my life is dying and this song support me and help me to don't forget love and life never end...
My whole life, I've been learning...
this is still my favorite arcade fire song, live, broken and perfect
I never want this song to end

Still rocking 2024
They should really perform this song live more often, it's so amazing!
One of the profound human emotion delivered
This song always makes me cry.
very sorry about your loss.
i hope this song helps you through it... it helps me a lot too
This song melts my heart...
@dnlrss Mary Alice Chassagne was Regine's mother, she died in a car accident, that's why Régine wrote this amazing song!
this song pulls on the heart strings.
Brilliant
her voice reminds me of bjork.
she's great :) lovely song
Vulnerable and yet so powerful!!
Crap, the end got me again always end up tearing up
Just beautiful!
Bravo, Régine!
Rightly so man, arcade fire right stuff we can only wish we could. Viva le Arcade Fire!
Regine is now one of my favorite vocalists. This song blew me away!! 3:45- FUCK.
Blown away. Absolutely blown away.
I love the part around 4:50 where Regine is so wrapped up in the song she forgets where the mic is.
These guys sooo get IT, they really do, BEAUTIFUL!
So powerful. Chills Everytime
C'est belle!
One of their best songs, and they have never made a bad song.
Vulnerable and yet so powerful

@matmptmx I agree, that even innocent and poetic way that they both have to express themselves on stage!
@DuduEspoir Thanks!!!! What a great song!!
Absolutely brilliant

Emotions.
Thank you, I appreciate it. :)
Vi esse show em Porto Alegre. Nunca mais vou esquecer. Eles abriram para o Strokes, mas eles foram a atração principal 😂
I love how the audience was confused about when the song ends.
Raw emotion
Fucking awesome
i can't believe this video didn't even reach 100k views...
Someone told me that Owl City wrote better lyrics than Arcade Fire I hate that person more than Ive ever hated anyone
Peace bro.
5:16 chills...
The whole point of being a child who gets driven everywhere and never learns to drive is relatable fir every youngest child in a large family
Wuuuuaawww... 😳 Regine de verdad se esmero en esta presentación, de las pocas veces que ha cantado bien en vivo, la amoooo ❤️

Find it bizzare, first time I see Win not being able to look at Regine/Crowd. But then again he must know what the song represents to her.
I agree...I think he respects Regine dearly since this song is deeply emotional for her.
Her gloves seem to be a hint of their next album Reflektor
who's Alice???
I think Regine's mom
who is alice?
Her mom
@eheffelf hahaha agree...
@amosepe Her mom.
