Lucky to have seen this in Aug. Next time will bring binoculars though and buy the guide book to explain the different scenes.

      Frank on Foot:
I had binoculars and a guidebook, but I found I rarely used the binoculars and left the guidebook in my hotel room. I was amused at the person who sat beside me and had their nose in the book throughout the performance and missed half the spectacle.
Some suggestions for next time would be:
      1) The story is well-known to Christians. Non-Christians should watch a movie in their own language before visiting. What is needed is a dramatis personae before starting or a surtitle over the stage that blinks on just when a new character enters or re-enters the stage giving their name. I spent valuable time and brain power figuring out who was who rather than absorbing what was happening. Fortunately, the tableaux, music, acting, animals, and singing were fantastic.
      2) The producers spent a lot of time on the dialog of the characters at the trial of Jesus using politically correct German, which made the show drag and was not appreciated by me and much of the audience that does not speak German anyway.
      3) Where were the miracles of Jesus? The next director could condense the legal jibber-jabber of the trial and use the time saved to show some classic miracles prior to Jesus entering Jerusalem and introduce some key characters at the same time. Lazarus would be a good candidate since he appears later. Walking on water is very symbolic and could also be used to introduce key apostles.

@@PeterKvas It is a Passion Play, which is only the last 7 days for Jesus. I sat in almost the last row, so binoculars would have been useful and the guidebook to read before, to find out who the actors are portraying and to explain the Tableaux. I thought the directors have done a great job.
If you do not understand German, how do you know they were using politically correct German? What does that even mean? I speak German and found the dialog to be just fine. I appreciated the emphasis that Jesus was Jewish and the Last Supper was Passover. That the actors were saying prayers in Hebrew.
