I like EH as a company and a little ashamed I don’t have more of their stuff. They seem to keep focused on what they do, not running their corporate mouths about stuff unrelated to guitar, and they constantly innovate, creating new wacky pedals, or variations of classics, constantly. They don’t seem to be afraid to take risks and think outside the box. Their stuff is made well and a lot is made so that it’s easy to repair or tinker with. They’re like Toyota and Honda from the 90s! If more companies were like EH I think the world would smell, taste, sound, and look way more interesting!
As an overdrive guy, one pedal I’d recommend checking out is the Hot Tubes overdrive pedal. It’s got a feature which allows you to make your sound warm and smooth. Or instead of using it, it’s time toggle allows you to make your sound brighter than normal. This can be helpful for people who play a lot of Gibson’s like myself, or who want to make their Gretsch guitars warmer in terms of tonality.
How do you get the tone to sound good? I’ve seen videos where it has that slightly distorted/over driven sound and it’s good but when I use it it’s either weird sounding or a straight distortion
Another honorable mention is the LPB-1. EHX has been making that one as long as the Big Muff and it works well with older single channel amps like JCM 800 or Plexis to boost the preamp and give the amp some extra headroom and volume boost
I'm so glad someone remembered the LPB-1. Although the first ones weren't a pedal, you could plug one into your amp and piggyback a few more into that. I thought it had a good tone. Nice little boost box. Had three of them, but lost them along the way through life.
The Bass Preacher...soz but i'm a bass player ,i really like the Bass Preacher Compressor/Sustainer with 3 position knee speeds, slow, medium & fast..just 2 pots, level & a compression/sustainer level pot & a 3-way toggle, great for a pedal board or straight into a bass amp...a very transparent compressor...& it lasts as had mine many years now & still works perfect with a yearly clean with Isopropyl alcohol & a squirt of D5 in the pots & 3 postion knee speed toggle switch...
@@RobertWJackson Op amp is great. Definitely the Billy Corgan Siamese dream pedal. As you're not a big 'fuzz guy', you can pair one with a soul food to tighten it up and make it less flubby as such. I use mine for Sabbath tones a lot too.
A little late to the party, but I finally got one of these bad boys a little over a month ago and absolutely love it! And while it is unquestionably a muff, and behaves like a fuzz, the actual tone of the thing sounds more like a gritty distortion to my ears. Or rather, a fuzz/distortion hybrid. Extremely versatile pedal, just remember to back the tone off, as this has a lot more treble than your standard muff!
I'm haven't been a fuzz guy, but since I started building pedals and after several requests I built a fuzz and after some amp adjustments I'm hooked and having fun using them.
Don't know enough about the pedals yet but it's nice to have a great list to check out. I have been going back and listening to the older videos too. Thanks Robert!
Hey Robert! I own a Big Muff, Voice Box and Lester G. I have to agree with you 100%! EHX makes great pedals for the price. I love them all and recommend them to all musicians. Great review 😜
You might like the Tattoo pedal I was not a fan of the Metal Muff w/Top Boost but believe it or not the Pocket Metal Muff the 2 knob version Is great Good picks on the 7 Love the 9 series too😎🎸
I use a graphic fuzz into an 808 tube screamer. With the eq on the graphic fuzz you can really get some great sounds. The graphic fuzz really don't have much of a fuzz sound but just enough for me.
Great video. I am a mild EHX fan boy with 3 of their pedals. The EHX silencer is a very solid noise gate for cheap but not exactly a sexy pic. I definitely love my Memory Man with Hazuri. I picked one up used for $100. Best pedal purchase ever. Very usable delays to start and then you can trip out on and explore endless sounds/effects all night without waking up thinking you’re a glass of orange juice. 🍊 The pedal has tap tempo and a built in looper. You just don’t get buyers remorse with their pedals because they are always worth the money.

Well this is very timely. New year's Eve I ordered the Mel 9 pedal. Should be here next week. However in your event video on octave pedals you might remember I have the boss OC3. I am so disappointed with that pedal. I have been eyeing the POG 2 and plan on getting that. The cool thing with that is it also go up or down octave simulating a 12 string. My band has been doing some The Cars tunes lately. I am able to do some keytar solos and stuff but they don't sound right. Hoping this gets me closer. Also was getting worried when you hit number 2 I was really no big muff pedal. Glad to see you put it in a rightful place.
I own a Mel9 and that pedal is amazing. Check out EHX's Epitome pedal. It has a Micro POG as well as a Holy Grail Plus and Stereo Electric Mistress onboard. Hooking the Mel9 and Epitome together is God-like!
I tried to make this list as objective as I possibly could, which is why the Big Muff was #1. You all KNOW how I feel about that pedal. But the truth is a lot of people would have lost their minds if I’d left it off altogether. LOL And the truth is, that’s EHX’s flagship and it deserves the spot it’s in.
Eddy chorus-full-featured chorus and vibrato (all analog) at a working man’s price. You just can’t beat the Eddy. Stereo Electric Mistress-blending flanger and chorus is a great idea with great results. The sounds that you can make with this pedal go from psychedelic UFO crashes to crystalline radiance at Superman’s Fortress of Solitude. Op Amp Big Muff-you want the wall of sound? Buy this. Run the tone knob on the pedal at around 10 o’clock and roll back the tone knob on your guitar to taste. You’ll know you got it right when your amp growls like the friendliest rabid dog you’ve ever heard. Really makes ya think about adopting a pet. B9 and C9-can’t find a competent keys player for your new Pink Floyd cover band? No worries! These two pedals will take you where you need to go. Mesmerize and confuse your audience today!
Although I like electro-harmonix pedals very much especially with the wide level of selection, I'm always concerned because they provide their own power source and it seems to be more than what your standard power block of 9 volt sources can provide. They strongly recommend using only their 9.6V adapters. Please clarify if this is safe, if it will damage the pedal using something like the voodoo power 2 to power their pedals appropriately and safely. Thanks Robert!
They actually seem to have gotten away from that. I know the 360 and 720 Looper pedals both come with a 9.6V power supply, but I’ve talked to many people who’ve all verified that they work just fine on a standard 9V.
This is two years late, but pedals are fine working with less than 9.6v or 9v, it’s even a technique used by some on Fuzz pedals to get a spluttery or gated sound. What I’ve always been told is to make sure the MA(milliamps) are the same or higher in the power source one use, but with volts it’s a bit different. A 9v battery has more than 9v, close to 10, yet it can be used in 9v pedals. Similarly, the pedal that states it needs 9.6 will be fine with a 9v, as it’s fine to be in slower voltage. As one goes lower in voltage each pedal will react differently. Some love the effect, while I’m sure some digital pedals just don’t function correctly once the voltage is too low. Just don’t go trying to use 12v in a9v or 9.6v pedal, unless the builder has stated it was ok. My long winded way of saying it’s fine to use the EHX 9.6v pedal with a 9v from a Voodoo Power 2.
