You're a hidden gem, I'm glad that i found your channel and you have pointed out everything i thought of while watching part 2. I'm gonna admit that The Nevers was a fun ride and took my mind off of the news about the genocide in Palestine 😢 so yeah i hope we see better sci-fi and fantasy series in the near future

Thank you. And I'm glad The Nevers was a fun distraction for you. And I'm glad I wasn't the only one noticing this stuff during my watch.
If you are looking for more historic fantasy to distract you, Interview With The Vampire season 2 releases in May ^_^ It's a totally different vibe, but season one had great production quality and might help balance your media diet.

Yes I think one of the streaming services, probably Quibi bought The Nevers and plays it at scheduled times with commercials. The commercials are incredibly jarring because the show wasn't created with that kind of interruption in mind. Still I'm glad I was able to watch part 2.

Thank you, and I'm glad I wasn't the only one unpleasantly surprised in the direction the back half of season 1 took. But at least we managed to watch it at all. Who knew that would be such an accomplishment?

@@jessicadoneganreads Right?!? I wasn’t as disappointed as I was with Season 8 of GoTs, *but* it was still pretty disappointing! I was really looking forward to a good, solid ending with all the incredible possibilities wrapped up neatly……but no. We got what we got and it was just a big *meh* of confusion and contradictions for the various characters we’d come to know 🥺….. *sigh*

Thanks for doing a review - it is interesting to discover what others thought about The Nevers... I watched the last episode this morning and was somewhat disappointed with the endings, but I thought the whole series was very good. I agree that the second half seemed diminished in order to finalise what could have been 24 episodes rather than 12. I suspect and resent the fact that such a setting which included so many good female parts was axed - it's rare to see so many positive examples of various females of all ages and backgrounds.
I had a different impression from you about a number of things... I didn't see the need for the characters to be 'tied up in a neat little bow' and enjoyed the characters that were introduced into the story. This added to the feel of London being a bustling19th century city containing people from all walks of life. Also I'm not sure about having the need for a clearly defined small set of characters for whom one should root, that's sounds like a stylised format which to my mind would restrict the depth of the narrative. Maybe your view of how more should have been of Dr. Hague's nationality is formed by a North American perspective? As a British person I'm note sure why his nationality would have been of particular interest - Dr. Cousens had a West Indian accent and I don't remember his nationality being a point of interest either. I thought the mother obsession was an acceptable reason for Dr. Hague who was deeply disturbed. Ack no, Augie's boyhood reveal of his 'secret' shed with mangled birds in would signal alarm bells to many people (including me)!! 😨 Had Augie openly confessed an interest in anatomy and gradually collected the bird cadavers over a period of time (from those found on the estate) then there would be no problem, it's the fact that the wee pervert is killing the birds himself and is not conducting scientific investigations but macabre disembowlements. I would think his sister might fear he enjoyed torturing the birds too, and this probably wasn't the first 'odd' thing she'd noticed about him. Augie was a villain and one of my disappointment with the ending was that Penance had sought comfort in the arms of a murderer. Sorry, Augie was a wrong'un from my perspective, let's not forget he abandoned his disabled sister in a disused tunnel - the man's seriously flawed. I also thought Maldie's character was one of the few well-developed characters within the second half, and her development made sense to me. I thought it understandable that Mundi released Sarah - he wasn't seeing Maladie and the character may have thought Maladie had disappeared? I don't think there is a strong analogy between Jesus and the Galanthi we encountered. My impression was that it wasn't so much a sacrifice to save humanity but a mechanism used by the Galanthi to spawn more Touched. Who knows if this is how they 'save' species they encounter - their deaths can be used to 'touch' beings to a higher level of empathy which reduces the risk of the species self-annihilating? Regards the ending - yes, a lot of tragedies - I don't think they 'killed off the gays' Mundi and Swann just got the short straw as did Amalia who was left alone, Nimble Jack and Bonfire Annie got the long straw! As you said at the beginning, the attempt to wrap the show up in the last six episodes lead to a waste of a wonderful idea which was one of the best settings for a fantasy story we've seen in recent years. I thought the creative input was outstanding given the series came under the cosh by the suits, bastards!
Running out of time? What a strange term of phrase, just make time for some more or put your clock back! 😉
P.S. My eldest daughter loves your frock - says it's very elegant.

Thanks for the response and I'm glad you liked the video. And thank you daughter for the compliment. It's aways fun when I have an outfit I can use to dress up a bit for these videos. This one gets a lot of milage in my latest Interview With a Vampire series and it always has me wanting to revisit the perfection of Penny Dreadful to do something with that series.
I think if the show had been longer, I'd have less desire for a "neat little bow" but with what we got, I find dedicated all this time to characters who aren't part of the main thrust of the show pretty frustrating. Especially as it felt like the show was pushing for a connection/interwoven threads thing but obviously can't execute it in the current time constraints. I didn't want a small set of characters to root for so much as characters with objectives and motivations that made sense. Like often it felt to me as if characters wanted things so the plot could happen.
I'm sure my particular interest in a Brit vs American thing does have to do with my American world view 😅. I called that out because we had the most time with him and I've more examples of what could have been done. Dr. Cousens does make reference to his past and how it informs his interactions now. I think they'd probably have built on it more in other seasons. They don't do a full in-depth arc but there's some mention of him learning to "go along to get along" and "take what he can get" and by the end of the episode he's no longer trying to go with the flow and fly under the radar but standing up for himself and his family and their right to live in the world as they are. I'd love more but it's 12 episodes and a million characters to run through.
The context around the birdhouse matters, and I think we're just interpreting the scene and Auggie's character differently. Hunting and taxidermy are still things people do now recreationally. It was an even more common in the past. In "Where the Red Fern Grows" the little boy hunting raccoons with his dogs is a heartfelt story set in the 1920s, the boy is ten and people all encourage him in his hobby. I can see how keeping it a secret is an issue, but he's here showing his big surprise to Larvina, so no more secret and we can judge exactly what's happening which could be red flag city but also could just be fine. I kind of saw it as how as a child I'd write and create little plays with my siblings--we'd keep the whole thing a secret until we had a surprise performance for our parents. Kids keep things secret so they can show off an accomplishment or so they don't have to mention it if doesn't work or just because they don't it matters that much.
Auggie might be one of the most complicated characters in The Nevers. I think it's important to remember Penance doesn't know Auggie's a murderer and has no reason to believe he's a danger to her or anyone else. And he walked away from his sister after discovering she's trying to destroy the galanthi and she's financing a doctor who's actively torturing people and removing their autonomy. We see him both nervous and racked with guilt over his decision to leave her in the tunnel which suggests he might just be trying to process what to do with her. It's still not a shining moral thing to do but there's nuance there. Not to mention she's been abusive to Auggie the whole show.
Maladie and Sarah are the same person. You'd can't see one without the other. It's awful how Sarah was treated but she went from being a victim to the perpetrator. I guess I don't see why Mundi would assume Maladie is gone or why that would matter.
All the talk about the galanthi's love for humanity and dying so humanity could survive didn't feel very Jesus-y? The torture at the hands of the people the galanthi's trying to save or the deity like status followers of the galanthi seem to have for it or the hunt these followers have to know the galanthi's will.
I do think you're right a season 2 could have built on what the spores were and why the galanthi wanted humanity to take them up even at the cost of its life. Could have gone way more sci-fi horror and we might have met others of the galanthi's kind or perhaps found out the galanthi is like a carrier that preps humans to meet real aliens. That would have been cool.
Thanks for checking out my video and sharing your thoughts. Glad you found a way to watch the rest of the show cause it's not an easy one to get your hands on.

I agree with you the second half of the series wasn't very good, but I will admit I did miss one episode in the second half. So it's nice to hear that my feelings weren't just generated due to missing that one episode. There is one thing that really bugged me in the second half and that's the final confrontation between the Touched and the mob. They had been building up this big confrontation between the two groups, and I was really curious to see how they were going to have it play out. Then they got to the confrontation and removed all of the Touched's powers within the first seconds of the confrontation which kind of sucked to me. One question I do have though, is did they ever explain why Lavinia was so dead set on getting into the egg and killing the Galanthi?

    • @jessicadoneganreads
      @jessicadoneganreads  8 месяцев назад

Yes. I realizing having the face off when the touched don't have powers is one way to increase tension (since if they had their powers it should be relatively easy keep everyone safe in the orphanage) but it also leads to a fight scene I don't think many of us cared about.
With Larvina: I think it's implied that because she knows her brother has powers and also thinks he's dangerous she's set on either removing the powers or destroying everyone with them because they're all dangerous even if they don't know it. And for some reason she just thinks destroying the egg will stop the powers or the spread of them or something. The logic always felt shakey but I assume she trusted Dr. Hague's theory on it.

@@jessicadoneganreads I don't know if it would have been easy to keep everyone safe if they had their powers, not many of those that had shown powers had ones that were offensive in nature. Truthfully, it kind of bummed me because I was curious just how they were going to do the fight, then they took the powers and it wasn't really a fight, and on top of that, they killed Primrose.
And thanks, I was worried I missed some big reveal when I missed that episode.

alien dying = powers on and off

I mean the Dr. thought the alien dying might turn the powers off, there was nothing to back up that logic. So I had no issue with the alien exploding so they could seed more power. I assume killing the alien wouldn't get rid of the turns already out in the world.

@@loucipher7782 I read that as the alien getting taken over by the phone lady and her will to do something else with the power effecting things. Like the alien's fight to keep its own body meant it needed all the resources it could get to do that.
