@@morrigankasa570 There is no need to homebrew older editions already created a good aligned lich - The Archlich. Essentially the lore is, becoming a lich in the way described in the video is the easy way to lichdom and those who are driven and more moral delve deeper and find a better way to lichdom becoming one that doesn't need to consume souls, don't decay as much, and can actually feel deep emotions/shift their worldview and are willing to sacrifice themselves for others/the greater good (all things normal liches either have to do or are incapable of doing).
Embed the Phylactery Gem into the Crossguard of a powerful blade. Use it to slay your enemies to steal souls or if you are slain, the newfound owner will steal souls for you...until you claim it back once you reform...
The first detailed process for attaining lichdom appeared in Dragon Magazine #26 I believe, "Blueprint For A Lich" by Len Lakofka. Fun fact, after "dying" from drinking the lichdom potion, the potential-lich can possess ANY corpse to claim as their new undead one, not just their own!
Number one reason bards do not become Liches: They have better things to do than all the work for getting the ingredients for the potion alone! Also, they could just seduce someone to do it for them.

First you have to make sure at least one person really wants to become a lich and understands exactly what that's all about (if someone just thinks "I guess I could do that" then that's not the right person) From there you build the campaign around that checklist. When they reached the ultimate level in the first campaign they basically started as the most recent people to get supreme powers. @@TheMayorofSpace so does the lich. It needs to do vile acts to please it's evil patron to keep its soul tethered to continue its unlife. Also having to get fresh soul to feed its phylactery
I asked that of Zee Bashew in his Clone spell video. He pointed out that a LOT of stuff in D&D captures souls- which would prevent the Clone spell from working.
I suppose you could just try to live out your eternal life trying to avoid those kinds of magics, but I guess that's how we get the clone war with that guy whose name I don't remember
As a warlock living in Yartar, I've thought of becoming a Lich, although I'm too busy killing giants and dragons with my team I never have the time to collect stuff for the potion and phylactery.
Ever see a really careful sorcerer mess up? So embroiled in completing a ritual that they accidentally swap the sacrifice and the person to become a litch? Yup, that's how you get a lawful aligned litch at the start of your game. He shall be known as "Spooky Boi"
Using this as backstory for one of my character, a rambling and insane wizard who was formerly a power-hungry and influential seeker of arcane strength. His quest for immense power lead to an interest in lichdom. His attempts failed and the price was his mind.
Neat recipe. Here's one that I found in an old "cook book" tears of an angelic being spilt over a lost love, blood of an unbound demon, (different demons imbue different flavors/spells/schizophrenic episodes) , same thing with the unicorn blood, heart of one who called you friend, rose petals from a bush watered with water from the river stix , and straight up uranium but bloodstone works in a pinch. Plus a dash of whiskey and honey for flavor. Thankfully only the heart has to be fresh!
The book sounds MORE like the Necronomicon if you ask me -Double D P.S. I came up with a simple, yet well thought up dnd character: -Race: Human (Sorcerer/Mutant) -Sorcerous Origin: Raw Magic -Type of Magic: Elemental Magic -Mutant Power: Perfect Memory -Parents: Mother (Mutant Cleric), Father (Sorcerer) What do y’all think, Good right?😁
I have played DnD for a very long time, from my experience if your deity does not want you to become a lich, upon ascension into lichhood you are destroyed by your deity. So it behooved the pre lich character to find this out first.
First make sure that they are around levels from 8 to 12 depending on the number of players. Make a lone Hag (better if it's a powerful one and not just the regular enemy from the monster manual) disguise and trick the party who should be well known by this level as heroes of sorts. The hag has already a few of the ingredients for the potion, she wants the rest to create the vile potion that she wants to give to her "dying husband" an evil mage that works with her in a covenant and wants to spread death and decay to become a lich as powerful as Vecna eventually. The hag will already have the arsenic and belladonna juice, she will ask the party to bring her blood from a unicorn that according to her MUST be killed with a beautiful dagger that she will provide (the blade is poisoned with wyvern venom of course) claiming that if they do so the unicorn's soul will be kept save and go to the feywild to revive at some point. After that she'll get a brainwashed villager, her demi-human "nephew" you could say, to help them in their next quest, a rare plant that only grows in the depths of the underdark of course she will point to a nearby cave system that she knows has a phase spider nest. The hag will have given the "nephew" the order to get killed by the spiders of course or perhaps cursed him to get attacked by them, either way on the way there the "nephew" asks the party that if something were to happen to him that they'd bring his corpse to the hag, so when he inevitably dies the hag can have the blood and the flower which isn't important. Next step is the vampire and this can be tricky, BUT, the excuse here is that she says that the curse/disease of her husband was inflicted by an evil Vampire lord that took over the land where they used to live, pointing the party towards the vampire city with the quest to slay the vampire lord not only will the party get to be even more heroic by saving this cursed man, but also be praised by the freed villagers who are completely anonymous to the situation. The humanoid heart and moth glands could be already in her possession, she's a hag so those wouldn't be difficult to obtain, but if necessary you could always request the corpses of the moths from the same cave as the spider, and get the heart from the "nephew" who was killed by phase spider venom, the pint of phase spider venom will be obtained from the party who will have probably suffered from wounds caused by the spiders at the cave, the hag uses magic to suck the venom out of them in its pure state as well as from the "nephew", the wyvern venom she already has it and that's how she poisoned the dagger in the first place. After that, she has all the ingredients, and there's only one last thing that you may wanna add: The book of Evil. Either the mage faking his illness (impossible to know it's fake due to weird ass hag magic) already has it and just needed the potion, OR, you can say that the book belonged to the vampire and that the hag asks for it because she must destroy it with a ritual that must remain secret so the party has nothing to worry about. There you go, hope you liked the idea, I love coming up with stories for my players that seem to be separated yet tie in the end. EDIT: I forgot about the phylactery, that's easy, you can tease to what it is if the players ask questions, perhaps the ill husband laying in bed is for some reason holding a golden scepter, a crown of sorts, etc(something out of place that am ill person shouldn't have with them while resting in bed). Or perhaps there are pictures and paintings of the man holding the same item in them: a crystal skull, a locket... again, to your discretion, only for when this guy eventually turns into a lich and the main antagonist your players will know what to look for, and the vest part is that it'll be all due to them, both the rise and fall of the lich.
That sounds like a beautiful idea. There are ways my friend there ways. Top of my head right now is have one of your players caught a fake disease placed the one wants lichdom, a powerful necromancer no less. Put a fake book that would heal the fake disease, but its all of the ingredients for the ritual to lichdom. Once theu everything have the necromancer appear stilling the ingredients with the aid of either devils, demons or any other evil of the lower planes all to help him. Then rest i leave to you to decide what could happen next. Do the party see the ritual to lichdom or do manage to stop it and cause him to become a boneclaw. So many possible and ways beyond what i said to get the players gather the ingredients
There was another version I had found once and am still desperate to find it again. If ANYONE can find it let me know. Rather than the 5e version, and different than the versions here, it described sacrificing three individuals: a child, an adult in the prime of their life, and an elderly person. Other poisons and spells were cast in between the sacrifices as well.
I think Ive seen it too. I remember a video where a guy talked very seriously and warning the viewer not to perform the ritual. This guy also had uploaded lots of videos on alignment as well which are also gone. I think his channel is just gone from youtube.
What can you tell us about Archliches? They are good liches, and I have one coming up in PotA, but I’m having trouble finding a canon rationale to Archlichdom.
I have a CoS game I DM, the druid is obsessing over claiming her revenge... Enough to make a deal with "the devil" my plan is if the player's can't save her, this is her fate. (I hope nobody from the game sees this lol)
Nice video, thanks Johphdan! Adventure idea: an aspiring lich thinks he is ready to give it a go... but isn't 100% sure so he decides to test it the someone else first.
I mean, there are worse masters. The most Vecna will do is give you a short hit list, or ask you to find some book. Dude is more interested in learning and getting one over thsn he is in playing silly games.
Thank you, my character needed this confirmation, I'm undead, but I came about an unusual process, I'll tell yah, owning a Phoenix as an animal friend, and battling beside a dragon tamer and several retired spellcasters is a mighty shortcut
Is it enough if you kill the unicorn with extracted wyvern venom and true polymorph into a phase spider to kill the demi-human? Also can you just cut yourself as polymorphed phase spider and wyvern to provide the required blood? Also maybe polymorphing some captured creatures into the giant moths to get the reproductive gladns? (this might be a no from me if I were the DM) And finally real vampire or vampire spawn is enough? This is for...a...friend...who's just a curious fella. 😐
i mean, if you use true polymath on someone else robbing them of their previous life and slaughtering them after is arguably just as evil. bonus points if you use it on newborn infants. hey, who said you needed to half ass the evil? might as well go all way, robbing potential of a future life that never got a chance to live it fully is pretty gruesome an probably worse then whats stated above. These things are left vague for a reason. *Different roads, same destination*
@@reyzonnmateo-guantes392 Is it more cruel to end a life of a mind that has no comprehension of its own potential future or kill a person right before or even during their knighting/coronation/wedding?
This is really useful for one of my characters? Either a wizard or a cleric (haven't decided yet), the daughter of a lich. She was so afraid of what her father had become she accidentally ran off with his phylactery. Oops.
I would suggest tracking down a night hag or venturing to hades yourself to secure a large amount of soul larva before the ritual in order to have a steady stream of souls for the phylactury, I myself took the weakest of the larva from a coven of night hags in the grey waste for a fairly low price as they were to weak to really transform into anything worthwhile and there fore were not worth buying nor selling so I was removing a burden from them (also I rolled a nat 20 persuasion)
Played a campaign awhile back where the entire party's goal was for all of us to become liches and form a new powerful undead nation. But our GM threw us a hell of a twist. The components needed to become a lich were in short supply and only one of us could finish the ritual. It got... bloody but man was it fun fighting an 8 way undead war.
As a Dm I made Blackrazor the Phylactery of my Lich BBG which was masked by a mind blank on user who unwittingly feed the Lich souls freely for it. The party was allowing its usage by the player but in truth they were allowed to have the sword...;)
Putting together this plus your Dragonborn video. Given the culture of excellence, one would think that there should be dragonborn liches by now. They seek excellence in all things, and becoming lich can be considered the pinnacle of (evil) wizardry. For that matter, given their shorter than human lifespan, the drive to seek immortality should be pretty strong in their race. After all, what good is becoming the best in your field if you're going to die soon enough anyway. The lure to lichdom should be obvious to dragonborn of an evil bent.
That's the infoS. Must be easier to play now with the vids describing everything you can at at 2x speed. "The lich's only desire is to destroy all life." Super adventure time-
I have a very specific idea of becoming a lich and im pretty sure the only thing that could kill me is a dragon at that point. Like a philactery is described as a space that both has significance to the individual and arcanic runes made up of silver. Soooo the city I was born in and helped to maintain its walls. Hear me out, create a religion about a specific deity that will help the civilians, perform minor miracles and actions in the name of said deity, once you have enough followers build a church of that deity in the center of the city and have them create runes that'll help protect the city(all made of silver) along the walls surrounding it. Now most of these runes are basic protection runes but certain ones created in specific order are philactery runes, this specific order creates the shape of a massive city wide pentagram with the church you had built in its center. Now at the top of the tower of this church is a ritualistic sacrifical slab adorned in all kinds of magical jewles, runes, etc gleefully donated by the civilians and followers. Cast the required spells and such for becoming a lich, then command your most loyal follower to plunge a sacrifical dagger into your chest killing you telling them "this is a sacrifice to our God and they shall be reborn through my body". Boom you become a lich, hide your disgusting face and body with clothing and a mask or helm, then announce to all civilians and followers that you are the God or deity of said religion and your here to protect and assist them. (Remember if enough people believe in a deity or religion that deity can sometimes manifest into reality, so your basically a deity as well lol) Plan a coop in which you dethrone whoever is in charge so you take their place, and make sure the city/civilians/followers stay happy and healthy. Now anyone who dies within said city is fed into your philactery (THE CITY) because they all worship you as their God believing they'll go to whatever heaven you promised them but in reality they are trapped inside you as fuel to keep you allive and besides why would they leave when they've been living happy lives in a wonderful city that is no longer suffering from poverty and is protected. Remember it's easier to scam someone than convice them they've been scammed 😂
Plan for a future campaign: Cleric that was turned into an Archlich by their deity as reward for his devotion, so they could keep serving longer. Feeding on the souls of the corrupt and wicked as punishment for their crimes, while constantly ensuring the souls of the good and innocent are protected and capable of peacefully passing to the afterlife.
Depending on your druids origin they could definitely posses the arcane knowledge to become a lich but obviously that's a rare case considering that would be against nature. Though if a druid did want to become one they would eventually start aging very slow so they could gain the knowledge.
I'm slowly devising a path of becoming a lich and even spoke to my dm about it, the hardest part is going to be keeping it a secret from my party, because all but 2 are lawful good, and the other two are lawful neutral. If they catch on, that's the end of that character's story.
This is why solo sessions exist. When the time is right, tell your party that you will miss the next session (make up an in-game reason for your character to be gone). Your party can go save the maiden fair while you have a one-on-one quest to gather one or more of the precious ingredients you will need. I recommend talking with the party about where and when you will rejoin them. That will give both you and the party a set amount of time to engage in activities without each other (making life easier on you, them, and the DM).
My parties current bbeg is a cleric that was forced into lichdom by a higher level black dragon; killed and resurrected by something our DM is calling “black blood”. What made me think of it was the heart portion of the phylactery making process since he was described as wearing runed dark steel armor with a hole purposefully forged on the left side of his chest. Currently he’s running around the world doing his masters bidding and collecting mages for some purpose(I think it’s to cast a spell to free himself). But we are trying to figure out what for.
- Be warned: to become a lich you must pay a terrible cost! - You mean being corrupt into an unfathomably evil being? - No, not that! I mean gold pieces. So many thousands of gold pieces.
alternatively, grab 5 levels of cleric or druid, 10 levels of walker of the wastes, have a lich senpai notice you then have him put your organs in a bunch of canopic jar and enjoy never taking another level again because the dry lich +5 level adjustement gets you right to lvl 20.
My wizard became a Lich to gain further strength to save his country from invaders and dragons. He has a large undead army and many Demi-planes full of undead soldiers and his wight generals at the ready for when the time is right. His reign will not be stopped. Which sorta happened when he became a King due to fighting some guy in fair combat. Which was a odd thing as my character didn’t know how to use a shield. At the end, The DM asked us for what will our characters do, I became a cult leader, a king, a lich, and a teacher for necromancy. Which was fitting as he was shunned for being a necromancy even when his dark magic was meant for saving the weak. Even when he became evil, there was a small light left where no children or women will die by his army or his hand.
See the thing is for me I’m a sorcerer drow. But I want to cross class when I’m 10th or 11th level. The thing is though depending on the classes I want to cross class with would it effect my transformation on becoming a lich?
I thought a demi lich was a lich that ascended his physical form by creating 8 soulstones and replace them with his body parts. For example eyes and teeth and the rest of the body crumbles to dust afterwards or am I mistaken?
I am currently playing a tabaxi wizard, my dm and other players think I will choose the school of divination (we’re all only level one) but I’m going to pick school of necromancy and become a lich, as a wizard I am very easy to die so my character will become driven crazy by fear of death and attempt lichdom
I’m having a character in my campaign being forced into being an aarakocra lich part of the reason being I wanna have an eagle headed lich with wings in my campaign and for him to possibly join sides with our pc that’s actually secretly the big bad and nobody knows but the one that’s the big bad, gonna have him capture the other pc and force him to drink the potion in an effort to try to make him a bone claw but instead he’s gonna actually become a lich for the story The big bad has huge resistances to that specific pcs abilities and playing style so it’s gonna be a definite unless he does something beyond insane but will be missing out if he somehow gets that to not happen

Luckily one of them survived....huh....did I recall corectly, or did the recipe include a human heart....
I have recently turned my cleric into a lich at level 2, i basically died and my friends accidentally took me to a tomb in which there was a death lord that turned me into a lich From a very loved priest with 17 charisma im now a lich whos hated and treated poorly.
Just to be clear there is no one ritual to make a lich. The documented ways are just the surest methods. Requiring the least risk. As well as few favors owed as possible. Nothing stopping you from finding a path to lichdom by other means and requiring different upkeep costs. Never forget a lich is not just a magic user who is undead. They embody the power of death in some way. Even a fresh lich is a force of nature and an experienced one not far from a demigod.

@@TheMayorofSpace so does the lich. It needs to do vile acts to please it's evil patron to keep its soul tethered to continue its unlife. Also having to get fresh soul to feed its phylactery
Yub-Tub's high priest Most Lich’s don’t have a patron
I asked that of Zee Bashew in his Clone spell video. He pointed out that a LOT of stuff in D&D captures souls- which would prevent the Clone spell from working.
I suppose you could just try to live out your eternal life trying to avoid those kinds of magics, but I guess that's how we get the clone war with that guy whose name I don't remember
You joined a Mages Guild I feel bad for you son,
I got 99 problems, but a Lich ain't one.

Lucky it only cost him his mind. He could have become a boneclaw
My character calls that 'Momma's Medicine.'
Your vids are so entertaining, I wish they were longer lol.
The book sounds MORE like the Necronomicon if you ask me
-Double D
P.S.
I came up with a simple, yet well thought up dnd character:
-Race: Human (Sorcerer/Mutant)
-Sorcerous Origin: Raw Magic
-Type of Magic: Elemental Magic
-Mutant Power: Perfect Memory
-Parents: Mother (Mutant Cleric), Father (Sorcerer)
What do y’all think, Good right?😁
imagine your phylactery is just a lego brick and you hide it in fully built lego sets xD
I have played DnD for a very long time, from my experience if your deity does not want you to become a lich, upon ascension into lichhood you are destroyed by your deity. So it behooved the pre lich character to find this out first.
How can I write a campaign where good aligned PC's have to assemble this?
If they’re anything like my Paladin, just trick one into thinking their god commanded them.
@@TheKasimkage Yes but no good god simply asks for such evil sounding ingredients that have to be gathered so specifically under grim circumstances.
Dragónitas Lávedon Say that there’s a spell-caster they’re dealing with who is going to find a way to banish a particularly evil being or something.
@@ollep0lle you're not thinking about Guildmaster Dan? His channel is there, just dead.
@@Doughy_in_the_Middle Nope it was not that guy.
Thanks for the tutorial. It worked great, I'm a lich now.
Something was missing though, so I’ll say it. “ hi I’m jorphdan! The ph is silent”
What can you tell us about Archliches? They are good liches, and I have one coming up in PotA, but I’m having trouble finding a canon rationale to Archlichdom.
>druids lack the arcane knowledge
Check out the Ghostlord from The Red Hand of Doom module. He managed to pull it off
I have a CoS game I DM, the druid is obsessing over claiming her revenge... Enough to make a deal with "the devil" my plan is if the player's can't save her, this is her fate.
(I hope nobody from the game sees this lol)
Great presentation!
Oops accidentally shared this video, now I'm competing with my friends to hunt for souls for our phylactery
Your friends aren't competition: they are ingredients.
Nice video, thanks Johphdan!
Adventure idea: an aspiring lich thinks he is ready to give it a go... but isn't 100% sure so he decides to test it the someone else first.
Bad idea, a warlock who's patron is Vecna
I mean, there are worse masters. The most Vecna will do is give you a short hit list, or ask you to find some book. Dude is more interested in learning and getting one over thsn he is in playing silly games.
Thank you, my character needed this confirmation, I'm undead, but I came about an unusual process,
I'll tell yah, owning a Phoenix as an animal friend, and battling beside a dragon tamer and several retired spellcasters is a mighty shortcut
Goosebumps amazing presentation...
Very cool! Are there the same quantity of information to become an archlich or Baelnorn instead?
Is it enough if you kill the unicorn with extracted wyvern venom and true polymorph into a phase spider to kill the demi-human?
Also can you just cut yourself as polymorphed phase spider and wyvern to provide the required blood?
Also maybe polymorphing some captured creatures into the giant moths to get the reproductive gladns? (this might be a no from me if I were the DM)
And finally real vampire or vampire spawn is enough?
This is for...a...friend...who's just a curious fella. 😐
is it as evil as the alternative?
I mean, you're welcome to *try,* but I don't like your odds, friend.
@@derekburge5294 Lazy wannabe-liches be lazy :D
i mean, if you use true polymath on someone else robbing them of their previous life and slaughtering them after is arguably just as evil. bonus points if you use it on newborn infants.
hey, who said you needed to half ass the evil? might as well go all way, robbing potential of a future life that never got a chance to live it fully is pretty gruesome an probably worse then whats stated above. These things are left vague for a reason. *Different roads, same destination*
@@reyzonnmateo-guantes392 Is it more cruel to end a life of a mind that has no comprehension of its own potential future or kill a person right before or even during their knighting/coronation/wedding?
Holy shit, good work on this video, seriously good job
This is really useful for one of my characters? Either a wizard or a cleric (haven't decided yet), the daughter of a lich. She was so afraid of what her father had become she accidentally ran off with his phylactery. Oops.
For 5e warlocks do have above 5th level spells. Just not directly spell slots
Speaking of eternal life what are the other ways? Could you do a video on this topic?
a wonderful episode jordan ph is silent. thanks!
I am not saying this is one of my dreams but I want to be a lich XD
I would suggest tracking down a night hag or venturing to hades yourself to secure a large amount of soul larva before the ritual in order to have a steady stream of souls for the phylactury,
I myself took the weakest of the larva from a coven of night hags in the grey waste for a fairly low price as they were to weak to really transform into anything worthwhile and there fore were not worth buying nor selling so I was removing a burden from them
(also I rolled a nat 20 persuasion)
Played a campaign awhile back where the entire party's goal was for all of us to become liches and form a new powerful undead nation. But our GM threw us a hell of a twist. The components needed to become a lich were in short supply and only one of us could finish the ritual. It got... bloody but man was it fun fighting an 8 way undead war.
A bard lich sounds very interesting and warlock or sorcerer lich sounds so dependent on the origin of their abilities.
anyway, I'm selling lychdom potions, 500k gp a bottle, any takers?
Will you be making a video on the dwarven pantheon or a hero's of the realms video set?
In older editions then the eating soul thing is not necessary and in 3rd edition then a demilich is actually an upgrade along with the aka-lich.
As a Dm I made Blackrazor the Phylactery of my Lich BBG which was masked by a mind blank on user who unwittingly feed the Lich souls freely for it. The party was allowing its usage by the player but in truth they were allowed to have the sword...;)

Great video! Had a sweet Halloween vibe to it :)
Almost immediately after he tells me I have to work for it, "Bitch, I'm the DM, shortcut"
That's the infoS. Must be easier to play now with the vids describing everything you can at at 2x speed. "The lich's only desire is to destroy all life." Super adventure time-
Great video💀👍🏼👍🏼💯
I once played a Lich named "Bife". I did this just so I could take advantage of the most opportune moment to say "Bife's a Lich".

Great video I enjoyed it!
Does a soul need to be ritually sacrificed or can I just meteor swarm a city and just load up FMA style

I'm guessing they would have several already! ? Maybe?
Most important video in the multiverse
(Remember if enough people believe in a deity or religion that deity can sometimes manifest into reality, so your basically a deity as well lol)
Plan a coop in which you dethrone whoever is in charge so you take their place, and make sure the city/civilians/followers stay happy and healthy.
A lot of this information is contradictory to other lore so I'm just going to pick out bits and pieces.
Black Blood reminds of Soul Eater, lol
Become immortal? I don't even want to be alive right now!
well good thing your undead when your a lich

I’m having a character in my campaign being forced into being an aarakocra lich part of the reason being I wanna have an eagle headed lich with wings in my campaign and for him to possibly join sides with our pc that’s actually secretly the big bad and nobody knows but the one that’s the big bad, gonna have him capture the other pc and force him to drink the potion in an effort to try to make him a bone claw but instead he’s gonna actually become a lich for the story
The big bad has huge resistances to that specific pcs abilities and playing style so it’s gonna be a definite unless he does something beyond insane but will be missing out if he somehow gets that to not happen

hmmm hmm hmmmMMM yes sire jorphdan, I may restrict myself of using this forbidden knowledge to lichdom, after breaking into the tome of forbidden knowledge, slaying the keeper of the tomes, specifically searching for it in the forbidden archives, and having sacraficed nearly all of the party members I just hired to keep the eldrich beast off of my tail.
Luckily one of them survived....huh....did I recall corectly, or did the recipe include a human heart....
I have recently turned my cleric into a lich at level 2, i basically died and my friends accidentally took me to a tomb in which there was a death lord that turned me into a lich
From a very loved priest with 17 charisma im now a lich whos hated and treated poorly.
I can't help but read the title in Machete's voice.. Dungones!
This is going to help me in my endeavours to become a Lich. S tortal lich
