I watched Sailor Moon on tv but Kimba was at my local video store and I use to rent and I loved the show and had no idea it came out in the 60s. The White Lion was so cute so is the girl lion. Its a different take from Lion King. They totally copied both the names by making them sound alike and the scenes. I just finally watched the original Astro Boy although its not complete in dubbed and just started Speed Racer. I'm watching the Origins of Both Anime and Cartoon series and movies. Too young to remember any of the episodes, but I do remember there were seven creations before him, hence 8th man, and an episode where his secretary caught him changing from Tobor to the 8th man. I don’t recall ever seeing this as a kid. The only two cartoons I remember from Japan with similar early Anime styles at this time was Kimba first, then Speed Racer came along. And 8th man reminds me of Racer X (Speed’s secret brother) from Speed Racer. My guess is this was televised on the East Coast which did air unique cartoons compared to the West Coast. I grew up in LA.
    This appears to be very early … like ‘64-‘65? Gotta love the power cigarettes :-) That’s sure is a sign of the times.

    Back in the 60's I guess it was, Speed Racer, Gigantor and 8th Man all came on around the same time on TV. If there was any conflict, I always chose 8th man. It had mature themes and just the fact that the guy had been killed and put in a robot was beyond anything they were showing in other cartoons. My friends seemed to prefer the other two shows, and I could never figure out why. The original from Japan was called 8 Man, without the 'th', and as far as I'm concerned this style was the predecessor to modern day Anime.

    Interesting Remastering. The original vocals are original but the sound effects are actually what has been remastered. Better remember to turn sound volume way down after watching or the speakers will explode!

      Tim Harper I think we enhanced the sound effects on the first 5 episodes, was for 5.1 on DVD. Yea you can "feel" the power lol We got to many bad reviews and complaints so stopped doing that with future episodes but the first few still remain as I never updated them. Personally it grew on me I like it but that's me.

      Tim Harper Yea this was a 16mm transfer, no idea of the source but think Dave from 8thman.com did it. I have 8 new episodes that someone transferred exclusively for us that I have been meaning to get done. Those are top quality 16mm direct-digital transfers, unedited w/ bumpers intact. The only better quality you can get is 35mm but those are hard to get a hold of. Been so busy with other aspects but hopefully I will get to them soon.

    Take note, the opening animation sequence and music were done here in the US by Trans-Lux animation and music by Winston Sharples. Think "The Mighty Hercules", "Felix the Cat", etc.
    In LA we got "*8 Man" in '66, along with other anime. The animation and dubbing were crude, but the writing and direction were unique and sophisticated. I used to compare the "new" anime to banal crap like "Johnny Quest" UGH!
    Having grown up in LA, I'd hang out with Japanese and would later meet many of the anime/manga movers and shakers. I purchased my first manga examples as a teen in 1970 and still have them!
    I'll end it here...

      Robert, "Johnny Quest" ruled! As did the '60's era "Astroboy," and other dramatic 'toons of the era. We also grew up watching cartoons from Russia and Europe (I had a short chat with one of the original syndicators about 10 years ago) on local So Cal TV. These shows got on the air because they were usually inexpensive and I think some of the TV station people enjoyed them as well.

    There is a live action 8th Man. Before VHS tapes became no more I rented a tape from Blockbuster Video and was amazed. The story was basic but the Professor's son was still alive and Tobor had to smoke a special cigarette to cool down his insides. I am going to do some sleuthing to see if I can find the movie. I maybe 66 but still sci fi, live action and aminmated!

    8th Man had a second brain in his shoulder (thought that highly cool). In one episode he brings down a missile which is threatening to blow up a city with his eye (removed from its socket). As a kid, there was no finer entertainment than Tobor: The 8th Man.

      TralfazConstruction There's no mention in the first episode as that's where he is created and professor genious says everything 8th Man has. I have seen all of these and the second brain is never mentioned that I recall, but I could be wrong.

    • @TralfazConstruction
      @TralfazConstruction 10 лет назад

      8thManDVD.com RUclips Channel So far in my research I Googled: "8th Man second brain in his shoulder" and found two references to this assertion of mine from individuals who'd either seen the show or were discussing the show with someone who had seen it. That's as far as I've gotten.

    • @8thManDVDcom
      @8thManDVDcom  10 лет назад

      TralfazConstruction I don't recall any mention of that, I would remember since it's unique but as I said I could be wrong and not remember. • @spikeriley
      @spikeriley 10 лет назад

      8thManDVD.com RUclips Channel Dude, it is said Robocop was inspired by anime like this.
      Also, Robocop is not a rip-off of 8th man. While they have the same origin of being killed as human and being reborn as robots, there are many differences:
      Robocop does not have the ability to conceal his robot body like 8th Man does. However, it was not necessary since he was hailed a hero as Robocop.
      Robocop needs to sit down in a chair and refuel on something similar to baby food while 8th Man smokes a cigarette-like energy source (something that would never be allowed in cartoons these days.)
      Also, Robocop uses a gun, and does not have super speed and anti-gravity. Also, in the third movie, he could fly using a jet pack.
      And while they are similar in origin, how they died is different. While brady was run over, Alex Murphy was fatally gunned down (in the reboot, he was severely wounded by a car bomb, but I'm not counting that since he lived and agreed to be converted there.)

    • @8thManDVDcom
      @8thManDVDcom  10 лет назад

      Spike Riley I think it's quite obvious they stole the idea from 8th man despite the little differences. I think robocop is a cheap rip off, nothing more.
