Jewish Views on Astrology in Ancient Times

- A discussion about Jewish views on astrology in ancient times, and the complicated relationship between astrology and early Judaism, with Dr. Justin Sledge and Chris Brennan.
Our starting point is the geographical location of the Jewish people being situated between Mesopotamia and Egypt, which were two cultures that had very old traditions of astrology dating back to 2000 BCE.
We then talk about the role that monotheism played in creating some tensions with early forms of astrology, which were often practiced in a polytheistic context.
Later we get into some positive views on astrology held by Jews during the time of the Roman Empire, including the Essenes at Qumran, and a text on Lots and zodiacal releasing attributed to Abraham that was drawn on by Vettius Valens and Firmicus Maternus.
We also discuss some of the early zodiac mosaics that feature prominently in synagogues in the first seven centuries CE.
Eventually we touch on some of the earliest Jewish astrologers who are known by name and who made major contributions to astrology, such as Masha’allah and Abraham ibn Ezra.

Uighurs are an ancient people of Central Asia, their history counts on for more than 2000 years old history. We have been Zaroostrians, Buddists (we actually i have had ntroduced to China with Budda concenpt i.e brought it from India), we have had been the only state who had a manicheizm as a state religion , but later accepted islam .
In spite of this Uighurs have still a strong traditiones which is originated and based on Astrology, things like funeral and mourning days 3,7 and 40 and also to give a name to a new born only on 40day of his/her birth and so on.

This was an awesome episode! It would be super cool to have him back to talk about how the Hermetic Order of the GD has appropriated the Tree of Life and gave the sephirah (plural) planetary designations and how/if they used the Tree of Life. (This has come up for me in my tarot studies-all 22 Major Arcana have been mapped to this.) It's a rabbit hole for sure, but the history of the when and how the GD started to apply elements and planets to this would be interesting!

Great discussion! "The Astrological Secrets of the Hebrew Sages" by Rabbi Joel C. Dobbin is a good book to understand the jewish views on astrology and how historically Judaism never condemned astrology, and that many great astrologers through the centuries have been jews.
I liked that book at first, but later I found that it contains errors

IMHO Binah can be associated with Saturn as long as it's the big malefic, and the left column is from where evil things emerge. In SY it also explains the covenant of Abraham with the 10 fingers. 5 in the left hand side and others in the other side. It really matches Ibn Ezra's division (except for Mercury that can flip to benefit sometimes).
And it is told that every sefirah has its own tree inside. Maybe it's Binah inside Malchut.
There are some sefirah-planet association in Rabi Aryeh Kaplan's Edition an commentary on SY.

Mentioned reading the kybalion to someone I’m visiting in Egypt sometime whenever and she mentioned she’s of Sephardic lineage in her mothers side who still practice Kabbalah. Whenever I get burnt out on astrology she brings that up plus stoicism.
It’s cool to find an episode because I’m curious of various compatibilities with astrology, I’ll learn more about Kabbalah at some point. I’ll admit, my lag is feeling it’s going to go WAY over my head. Sometimes it’s surprising, the kybalion seems like common sense to me so maybe the learning curve won’t be too bad.
Part of me is laughing at myself for how quickly I went from wanting to fine tune the mess that was learning the basics of astrology to going into mysticism. A lot goes full circle, I’ll come across one cultural cosmology or view of the universe to find it again, then again, then again.
Very good episode. It’s entertaining how easy it is to disappointedly shake your head at Christianity sometimes. Not long ago I pondered how long it’d take for it to sink in that the prophecy was wrong in that case but it has a great failsafe where it also has a prophesy of its own corruption. lol… Things happen for a reason.
I like that whenever I think I’m finished with this podcast other episodes creep up. Very engaging.

Gentlemen. Thank you. You don’t know how affirming it is to have two minds I respect greatly hitting the same “what ifs” and “we just don’t knows” that I have. Hermetic Qabala may not struggle with lining up astrology with the sefirot but classic Kabbalah doesn’t seem to fit as neatly. You guys just walked down centuries in a few hours and rocked the house. Thank you both for your research and insight.
