It’s actually not as unrealistic as you thing if you stay gainfully employed and save/invest a large portion of your income (live below your means).. Check out the F.I.R.E. (financial independence, retire early) movement for millennials... tens of thousands are involved and on track

Let me explain the basics. Hermès is the company who makes the Birkens which is their most sought after items. They range around $14k USD and can be all the way up to $80K depending on the material and hardware. If you were to go to a Hermès boutique they most definitely have one or two in the back but due to the waitlist they are mainly reserved for good clients with a relationship with the store. If you buy a handful of goods from the store and they like your style they may offer you a Birkin but you probably won’t get you’re desired color or material. There’s a variety of leathers and materials like calf skin, crocodile, to ostrich skin. Then hardware can range from polished stainless steel, silver, gold, and platinum. Since the bags are hand made and each boutique carries unique items most Birkens are pretty unique. The higher end clients gets bespoke items that are that years it item and trendsetters in themselves. They also hold their values very well and the true one of ones usually appreciate in value. The real distinguishing social values really are are you paying a premium for a last season item, settling for a color combination you may not prefer on top of spending extra at the store for a shot a one, or does the president of Hermès phone you with updates from the atelier in Paris asking you to approve the next step in construction of your item.

The Birkin bag thing is: it's so exclusive (used to be) that it's the only purse that accrues value over time. You have to be invited to purchase one and then they only make a limited number of each style and color. Hermes makes a nice bag but of everything they make personally they're not my style but I also wouldn't turn one down lol. $40,000+ is a bit much to be walking down the street with though. Id be too afraid to wear it. I got a pair of Off White's I've worn once because they make me nervous to walk around in lol
To give a diff perspective for those thinking dropping 40k on a bag is absurd and insane, it’s all relative value. Lemme give you an example. To some rich people the “pain” of paying the cost of a Birkin is similar to what common folk feel when ordering Dominos’s pizza. Does it cost you for the pizza? Yeah sure it would be cheaper to eat cereal or rice which is maybe 4-5 times cheaper. But you don’t mind since it’s a special weekend right ? So you splash a little for pizza vs cooking oatmeal. To rich ppl it’s the exact same. They have so much money that yeah sure I could buy a cheaper bag ( cereal ) but while it’s abit more pricey it’s something I can still afford ( pizza ). I know some ppl will say the comparison is wider for bags but it’s all still relative value. If you were living in the slums ppl would be think you are insane to spend on pizza when you can just eat beans and porridge. See it’s all relative
