And here we are! The final Super film on the list! I said I wouldn't watch this one but man, so many people requested this it was absurd. Some maybe for a laugh and other definitely more serious about it. The movie itself was pretty bad overall, however, I thought there were some cool moments!
Thanks for watching! Have a great day! :)
If you want to see a much better "bad" superhero movie, I have to recommend the unreleased Roger Corman's Fantastic Four (1994). It's cheesy, low-budget, and frankly, unfinished, but the script is solid and it's a lot of fun. It's like the antithesis to this movie, save for the music, which is just as good, if not better than Supergirl.
LOL pupper knocks to be let in, that's awesome! Even Canadian pets are super polite and knock instead of barking.
EDIT: just one other thing, you shouldn't ascribe female empowerment to this movie, this movie was created long before that phrase and the mistaken concept that female lead superhero movies didn't exist. This was not created to combat the patriarchy, or for representation as neither of those social media catchphrases were a thing in the 80's. Remember the 80's was a time of movies like Soul Man and One of the Guys. It was a very different time. The movie was made because WB has the rights to DC material, nothing more. Just saying.
Helen Slater is Supergirl in this film.
In the 2015-2021 TV series, Helen Slater is Eliza Danvers, Supergirl's Earthling adoptive mom.
She was also Clark's Kryptonian mother Lara El in Smallville.
No matter the quality of the movie, you could always rely on Jerry Goldsmith to deliver the music-goods. God, I miss this guy.
Precisely! Jerry never failed to deliver monumental scores for all his projects, even those that were not that great and this is a good example, as is 'The Final Conflict', 'The Mummy' and countless others. My personal fave of Jerry's (other than the Omen trilogy) has to be the masterpiece that is 'Psycho II' - funnily enough, a clip from it is in this film!!!!
Agreed. I saw it played by an orchestra live a few years back. Great stuff
The movie seems to suggest that the living Kryptonians in Innerspace have managed to contact Superman. (At the very least, they have the ability to observe Earth and keep up with Kal-El.) Hence why Supergirl wasn't very surprised to receive the same powers as her cousin.
Superman is said to be off-planet in this film. And if the Innerspace Kryptonians managed to contact him, perhaps that would explain why he suddenly went looking for Krypton in that five-year period before Superman Returns...
This film covers the early Supergirl at school in Midvale, where she had trouble with Lena Thorul / Luthor (daughter or sometimes sister of Lex Luthor), and Lana Lang, who also knows Superboy a few years earlier.
The detail of Superman being vulnerable to Kryptonire and also to magic is rarely commented upon, but Supergirl gets it full force.
Her father was an archaeologist and she used magical artifacts to combat Supergirl for boyfriends (essentially this movie) and was a close friend of Linda Lee, Supergirl's secret identity.
Some of this detail made it into the recent Supergirl TV series, especially the love / hate for secret identity over the super-version.
That shot of supergirl reaching the top of that phantom zone part with the light on her and she raises her arms..if you look at the tear in her suit on the arm its actually healing itself.....it was her getting her powers back
If you want to see a really fun 80's movie w/a song by Pat Benetar, check out "The Legend of Billie Jean" starring Helen Slater, Christian Slater (no relation), and Lisa Simpson (Yeardly Smith).
Jeannot Szwarc also directed "Somewhere in Time" starring Christopher Reeve and "Santa Claus: The Movie" which was produced by the Salkinds (same producers as Superman and features the same crew doing the flying effects for Santa's sleigh).
I second The Legend of Billie Jean heartily! 👍 Peak 80s mall scene, rockin' theme song, and a surprising amount of fuel for commentary on themes like fairness, consumerism, folk heroes, and idolization. The plot is far-fetched, but that was the 80s' specialty. 😎 Sadly, the movie has gotten little coverage from YT reactors thus far...
3:10 I read a while back that the composer for this score, Jerry Goldsmith of Star Trek fame, et al, was originally sought after to score the original Superman movie and even came up with a rough draft. I don't remember what happened, but John Williams was eventually hired for Superman. If I remember correctly what I had read before, THIS theme would have been Superman's had Goldsmith continued on that project!
In any event, both composers are geniuses and this theme, in my honest and humble opinion, is right on par with Williams' Superman theme! I have felt it for nearly 40 years!
This movie is a guilty pleasure of mine, it had tons and tons of issues filming and scrip issues. the original US version had a ton removed from it also compared to the rest of the world.
Two constants in the universe: John Williams: Star Wars and Superman. Jerry Goldsmith: Star Trek and Supergirl. And, why mess with perfection?
Nigel (legend Peter Cook) is the "priest" from The Princess Bride.
Mawwwage is what bwings us here...today.
Helen Slater went onto play supergirls mom on the tv series and her father was Dean Cain .....tv's Lois and Clark
27:34 Supergirl is a great movie. A female superhero travels to Earth to recover a magic orb which has fallen into the possession of an evil sorceress who is bent on world domination.
I used to have such a crush on Helen Slater. She still looks great. Helen was actually Supergirl's Earth mom on the most recent Supergirl TV show!
Same here couldn’t ignore Helen slater
Just a matter of clarification. It's not laser vision. It's heat vision. -OG
Not a great film but I love the witches they were wonderful and hilarious. Peter Cook playing the teacher warlock was a well known comedian and gives snape vibes.
I love the shade "...in that outfit"
Supergirl 1984 film 🎥 is what I would consider more of a fantasy movie than a super heroic movie. And I think that's what throws most folks off. But it's definitely better than Superman IV. Rest assured.
Plus, Helen Slater is perfectly cast for Supergirl. The actress also plays Supergirl's Earth mom on the current Supergirl series today. And played Clark Kent's Kryptonian mom in the Smallville series. -OG
35 million budget and is now a cult classic the blu ray is awsome
I still prefer this to modern Superman movies.
There's a lot of things you just have to assume and accept as the audience watching this movie. Selena knowing about the phantom zone was presumably told to her by the Kryptonian orb that's now tainted with witch craft. -OG
Plus some DC fans also ask how did Zaltar know Supergirl was in the Phantom Zone?? was he out walking randomly and spotted her or did he know Supergirl was there?? if so he should have found her and helped much sooner ??
The movie starts out in Argon City. A piece of Krypton that survived the explosion. -OG
I was a young teen when this movie came out, and I liked it well enough, even if it wasn't the best movie around. I have learned that this was supposed to be a totally different story; as Christopher Reeves was originally stated to star in the film. Supergirl was supposed to lead into Superman 4, but problems with the script, and getting Reeves to do the film, caused both films to have their stories. As it turned out; either script did well, and both movies tanked. I don't remember all the ins and outs of what happened, I just know this was supposed to be a totally different movie than what it was.
Another big thing, and this goes into the main flaw of the story, she knows all about Superman. She have never met Kal-El; didn't grow up with her cousin, and yet knows all about Clark Kent and Superman. It's the reason why she knew about her powers as Supergirl. She just figured she would have the same powers as her cousin, the cousin she never met! Again; Reeves was supposed to be in this movie, and would have taught her what she needed to know. However; that never happened, so they explain it away by saying (in passing) she learned about Earth and her cousin in school.
No the filmmakers deliberately insisted that she learned it during her space ride to outer space and to earth even though there's no voice over its insinuated she learns everything from there as Zaltars voice probably concieled throughout it during her appearance into as Supergirl!!!
One minor mistake Supergirl didn't decide to "fall asleep" she passed out through exushtion, you can literally see the toll it takes on her stuck and struggling like that, she really didn't have a choice of when she was going to faint but also why couldn't Zaltar find her and help her sooner??
I was so confused by the "It's super hot, it's 32 degrees!" comment because, my man, that's literally freezing...and then you revealed you're a Celius using Canadian and it all made sense.
Where are we? at the beginning: that's the movie equivalent of the surviving city of Kandor, part of Krypton that stayed together when the planet broke up.
Dude, I love your reviews. And glad you enjoy my favorite movies of all time: Superman the movie and Superman 2. Margot Kidder is my favorite. Met her and I am friends with the Phantom Zone Villains Sarah Douglas and Jack O'Halloran.
I love the music in Supergirl.
Not a great film but the witches are fun. The reason she starts casting spells with the Omega Hedron is that she is already practicing witchcraft, albeit poorly and in holding it she connects with it and feels it has power so she applies it. I love she goes straight for an immortality spell...
The Scrip is why there wasn't a Cameo from Christopher Reeve he originally was very excited to be be Superman again but not star in the movie his one scene was supposed to have Superman and Supergirl Flying around the world but read the Scrip and said No
Look, I know the movie is nowhere near Oscar-standard. Indeed, the premise was silly and the continuity didn't make any sense. But it's a fun movie. Who cares what the critics think. I love watching it growing up. I actually watched it during my morning breakfast, believe or not. People these days are cocky enough to think that everything they see on screen have got to mean something. They over-analyze and over-think every single things.
Just enjoy it for it was.
But you are smart to accept the movie for what it was especially from when it was released. And I respect your takes on the movies you react to.
One of the unused scenes was showing selina more evil by killing that protestor girl who held up the banner infront of selinas car...selina turned her to ice and then shatters her but it was deemed to dark so cut
BUT if you watch the scene again when they get put into the back of those vans we see a shot from inside the van looking outside to selinas car you can see the girls banner on the floor infront of selinas car in a puddle of water which was from the Ice they used
Another scene they actually filmed but did not use was in the dorm room when Kara comes into the room showing off her so called new hair style to a unimpressed Lucy the scene before was Kara using her heat vision to cut her her bouncing it off a mirror
This is one of only a few 'Super' films I've seen, I like it, it's fun and Faye Dunaway is Camptastic, you def get more from this if you watch first as a little gay boy growing up! Give me this over some dreary so called serious angsty super hero film anyday! I have no issues with it beyond the fact the main Viilianess could easily have won if she had been just a tad more restrained in her ambtions lol
and its got Peter Cook ffs, come on! Icon of British satire.
The thing that always gets me is that the guy in this movie is the jerk guy in Die Hard.
If you want to hear old Jerry at his best, you should hear his room-shaking score for Star Trek: The Motion Picture - one of the most fantastic music pieces I've ever heard. Mr. Goldsmith really takes you to some incredibly strange, surreal, alien places in this Star Trek music.
His soundtrack for ST V is better.
@@noneya3635 But The Motion Picture had that "blaster beam" instrument, which used to scare the bejesus out of me as a little kid.
This is a guilty pleasure. It's more enjoyable when you don't think too hard about it. It's in the same mould as Superman III. And it is better than Superman IIII. Helen makes the perfect Supergirl.
Reportedly, the original pre-Richard Pryor idea for Superman III was going to be a Brainiac story introducing Kal-El’s cousin, but that went past 1983 budgets and was taking over the script story, so they decided to abandon it to its own solo-spinoff lifeboat.
And anyone else get Faye Dunaway flashbacks when we got that “Wishing stone” plot in Wonder Woman 1984? 😂
So you watched many Michael J Fox and now Helen Slater here. Time for their best work in Secret Of My Success & again slamin soundtrack
No, there's no lesbianism in the film. No Lucy Lane and Linda Lee. And no Selena Witch and her roommate. Selena is attracted to the dumb dude and so is Linda Lee/Supergirl. And Lucy Lane likes Jimmy Olsen.
This was the 80s. Maybe if the film were made today, they'd push these minority groups into film like they do today as if half the population was gay. But it's just not a true representation of society. Hollywood never was. -OG
I loved this movie when I was a little kid. The inner gay child was obsessed with super girl.
shout out to canada for being logical and using celsius
try 46°c on a daily basis No AC you tend to get used to it
I remember watching this movie on 📀 when, I was 12 years old.
I went and watched it for Faye Dunaway and wasn't too disappointed with the movie. Sure it wasn't meant to be Oscar material but I was okay with it 👍👍👍
There used to be a pre-shooting version of this film's script available on the internet that made it clear that the two schoolgirls who tried to scald the other girls in the showers were the same characters that cause Supergirl a lot of trouble later when they find the Omegahedron.
The characters were split when Faye Dunaway and assistant were cast.
0 add some water to your curtains with peppermint oil and that will cool your room down my idea of natural cool air condition without the electricity just add cold water to your peppermint oil and spray it on your curtains and you'll get the cool effect of everything cooling down in your room if you spray it on your curtains.
Funny seeing Ellis from Die Hard as the hunk.
No way, you do your temperature in Celsius too! I'm in the UK
Speaking of "Innerspace" how about a review of the Innerspace movie with Denis Quaid, Martin Short, Robert Picardo, and Me Ryan?
Bro! I feel terrible for the heat you endure, especially since you unknowingly watched an EXTENDED CUT of the film! Oh man! But I love that you watched this! I didn't think this video would happen. So thank you! BTW, everyone can say what they will about this movie (it really is terrible) but this film does have some of the most impressive wire work of its time. The practical, on-set flying stunts were absolutely flawless and beautiful to watch.
I think Helen Slater is great. You should check out the pilot of the CW Supergirl series. Not saying you should watch every episode. But that first one is very good. Helen Slater plays Supergirl’s foster mother is the TV series.
The Scrip is what sunk this movie in my opinion between the 4 Christopher Reeve Superman Movies and Supergirl thus has the Worst especially when you consider the Orginal run time of Superman 4 the Quest For Peace was 2 hours and they cut 30 minutes out that would have explained that movie way better I know I've seen the deleted scenes and they do
This was a childhood favorite! It was in heavy rotation in our video collection- for me at least anyway. It's kinda cute I'm just realizing my folks must have bought this having only girls, no boys😂! My favorite super hero is still Superman though! You ought to check out The Legend of Billie Jean starring Helen slater and Christian slater (all these years later we googled that they aren't actually siblings after thinking all these years they were).
Am I the only one who kept saying, "take your shirt off" during this reaction?
I haven't seen this since I was a child when it 1st came out [on VHS]! Well if nothing else I can say the antagonist/protagonists are attractive.
gotta watch the movie "innerspace" w/ Martin Short , Dennis Quad & Meg Ryan
Ollie, if you're going to do Supergirl, then you must also do the original Casino Royale. Come on, you know you want to!
"I'm considering nothing less than world domination."
"Weird" isn't a strong enough word for this very messy movie. The story is the result of three different scripts stitched together, very poorly. The result has Kara leaving Argo to go after the Omegaheadron, Zor-El states that without Omegaheadron, the Kryptonians will perish along with Argo City in more than a few days and while Kara/Supergirl is on Earth, for no reason she stops her search to GO TO SCHOOL. One of the biggest problems was the insane spending. The film's opening credits, for example, cost almost $1 million to shoot. The budget topped $35 million and only brought in $18 million at the box office. You can still find enjoyment in the insanity, but let's be honest on the objective quality of the movie.
Fun Fact: A film container, with the words "Do Not Use" on it, was discovered at Pinewood Studios in London. The negative inside contained missing footage that was later used to create the director's cut edition of the film. Anchor Bay subsequently released this version on special edition DVD, limited to 50,000 copies. Warner Archive Collection, an offshoot label dedicated to Manufactured-on-Demand releases, would later release it as a bonus disc DVD for the film's Blu-Ray debut in 2018.
Flying Cardboard Fact; The scene where Supergirl flies out of the lake was actually a photograph of Helen Slater pasted on a wooden cut-out. The wire yanking her cardboard cutout can be briefly seen in the shot.
Missing Clark Fact: On the car radio, it is mentioned that Superman went off to another galaxy. This was written due to Christopher Reeve refusing to make a cameo in the movie as Superman. Superman going off to another galaxy was reused in Superman Returns (2006) which Superman returns to Earth 5 years after leaving Earth to go and find what is left of Krypton.
I had always thought that Superman had gone in search of Argo City. That's the impression I took from the radio report.
MAGICMONKEY52 ...Argo City, according to this movie, is in a river near a Chicago suburb. If Superman was looking for it, I think he overshot it.
It said peace keeping mission though.... maybe it's his ALT quest for peace that happens before superman 3 and superman returns!
Can you check out Breakdown on Blu Ray starring Kurt Russell and do a reaction video. Thank you 😊
Highly, highly, highly recommend the movie The Legend of Billie Jean starring Helen Slater. Another movie with a very low critics score, but for this one, I don't know why... I mean it's corny and unrealistic, but the movie puts in the effort to make it work. It's a good movie.
Best Regards!
The Legend of Billie Jean is Helen's best film. watch that one
Same temp over here in the UK. Have a great summer Ollie
I was not prepared for 12:39 😜
Interspace in the space within the spaces.
The one really good thing about Supergirl is that her hair colour and style change disguises her civilian identity far better than Superman's slight hairstyle change and glasses ever would.
🤪this is the silliest story but love the movie and grew up watching it Great memories tho
Have you watched anything from the DCEU movies? Another words, have you watched, "Man of Steel?" -OG
I actually like this movie its cheesy , of course we need an updated one and alot more serious... Supergirl is one of my favorite characters when it's done right Look up the animated series with Apocalypse that fight scene is epic Just go to RUclips search Apocalypse versus Supergirl There's a whole fight scene with them ..That movie is good you should watch it
Really wasn’t interested in this movie. I just came for the gun show! :p
40.5° here.
Hey, it was 34C here today - in Liverpool, UK (it never gets this hot here) and reportedly was 41C in some areas of the country (a record I think).
Although I'm quite fond of the music of this film (and Helen Slater I will admit), there is little else to compliment this film on - except maybe the effects (a helluva lot better than those in Superman IV, I'm sure you'd agree). It was kind of tragic how bad the script was, how little is really explained and the motivation of the characters was so flimsily handled.
It was like a bunch of men sat around a table and decided what was going to be in the film, but didn't come up with credible ways to insert each suggestion, so they were just inserted anyway. For instance, Supergirl assumes an alternate identity and goes to school. Why? How does that serve her throughline (to find the Omegahedron)? It doesn't, it serves the purpose of including scenes of Supergirl being bullied (again, why?). How about a witch seeking world domination who puts all that on hold so she can pursue a man? Of course so that Supergirl can have a love interest (she needs that because Superman had love interests).
This should have been at least two and a half hours, it should have been a sincere attempt at establishing the character (like the first Superman film), instead of what felt like a cashgrab attempt to make Supergirl like Superman in order to emulate that film's success. I felt bad for Supergirl as a DC character, I also felt bad for Helen Slater whom I think gave her all, despite her underwritten character.
you should watch the pilot episode of The Greatest American Hero
best flying effect better than Superman 4
Have you ever seen any of the Star Trek movies, Ollie? In the first several movies I think you'll find a lot of interesting qualities. I would like to hear your reaction sir. Especially my favorite, Star Trek: First Contact from 1996 (the Borg movie, also scored by Goldsmith).
I'm planning on starting the Star Trek movies in a couple of months so stay tuned! :)
@@RolyPolyOllieReactions I certainly look forward to it my man!
I agree. I watch Superman 3, 4 and Supergirl but they're obviously flawed and yeah with Supergirl if if made sense it would be a lot more enjoyable. I mean it really played up the Mary Sue problem, which the animated Superman/Supergirl films manage to avoid.
So you think you'll watch the animated movies? There's loads and there's no particular order. Inc The Dark Knight Returns (Batman Vs. Superman 2 part movies, you reall need to watch these on here. 2 or 3 reactors have done it already, but there's many others worth watching, plenty of reactions for you in the near future...
...Also, where's Wayne's World 2? I need some Christopher Walken vs Mike Myers :D
Saw this at the cinema , then VHS asa kid .. thought it was ok .
Now its just a bad film lol still better than Catwoman or Eternals . Lol
Supergirl!!!
Really, you guys don't get humidity there in the summer that would make at least a window AC unit worth money? Canada weird as hell.
Ahahah where I live in Canada the air is almost never humid and it never usually goes over 25 C in the summer :)
@@RolyPolyOllieReactions 50 bucks at Walmart chief, you can use it for a mini end table until the weather gets bad enough than toss that window unit in and be the envy of every hosser in the hood. Think about it. 😉
Hey babe, I negotiate million dollar deals for breakfast.
You should totally react to My Super Ex Girlfriend... funny movie... classic. Great reaction.
Best thing about the film is Jerry Goldsmith's score. The right balance of femininity and orchestral power.
Wondering if you (might as well)
Check some Superman animated movies
Inner space is another movie you should watch
Supergirl in the comics can process the Yellow sun better then Superman. However she has no experience. This doesn't help this movie at all. I thought this in 1984 and I'll say it now, this movie is a big streaming pile of 💩💩💩💩💩💩
Better than Superman 3-4 and unlike 1 doesn't spend an hour setting it up.
Sjes so sexy in this movie, I knkw the movie gets alot of hate but I enjoy it
Helen Slater It's good choice be Supergirl and Beautiful, But unfortunately the director ruined this movie
I think you would enjoy Man of Steel
Helen Slater is much better in The Legend of Billie Jean. And Faye Dunaway can be much more menacing! She's down right scary in Mommy Dearest. Plus the girl who plays her roommate must have a thing for acting in bad films. She was also a Pink Lady in Grease 2. 😄
If you want menacing Faye Dunaway WITHOUT Mommie Dearest camp, check out her Oscar-winning ruthless TV exec from 1976’s “Network”. 😈
Maureen Teefy was also in Fame (1980), which is a pretty good movie, but then, hey, I like Supergirl as well, so your mileage may vary.
@@DoctorWhoBookClub That's right, I forgot! I grew up on Fame....the movie and the show. I don't dislike Supergirl, I meant as far as public opinion goes on both movies. I was always weird and like Grease 2 more than most.
This movie was bad due to editing they cut alot out
I watched this yesterday....never been so bored!
Please watch “Selena “ 1997 you will not regret it!!
32 and its too Hot? oh boy Don't come down south unless you want 70, 80, 90 ,100+
unless you are talking Celsius that that is hot ...32 for us is your 0 ...I had to look that up
well your dog seems relaxed
It was Celsius!! I don't know how my dog survives
@@RolyPolyOllieReactions That translates to 89 degrees fahrenheit. It regularly gets over 100 degrees fahrenheit in Los Angeles during the summer (that would be 38+ degrees celsius). I would love 32 degrees celsius around here during the summer!!!
@@TheCkent100 Yeah, I thought it was funny when he complained about it being so hot and then said 32 degrees. I knew he meant Celsius, but it just came across as funny because to Americans 32 degrees is freezing. There are many place in the U.S. where temperatures never get that low. I'm in New England and 89 degrees is hot but bearable with a good fan. (Like Olly, I don't have AC.) It's when the temps get up into the 90s that it becomes really uncomfortable. Temps very rarely reach 100 or above here.
You baby! 89 Degrees Farenheight (sp)? It's at least 8 degrees (F) hotter here.... and that's outside! I have nothing but fans on in here.
Go work in a 130 degree (f) greenhouse for 9 hours.... then come complain to me. :p
Worst Superhero movie ever made, but the music by Jerry Goldsmith is the only thing good about this film.
Max steel is the worst Superhero movie ever made look it up yourself
@@Pinkielover agreed max steel and supergirl is the worst movies ever
Worst superhero film ever made have you seen Catwoman 2004 🤣
did you have to wave your towel over half the movie
Suoergirl a,ways gave me a woody back in the day
This is one of those cases in the 80s where they simply had no idea how to write a movie starring a woman. They had to bring in magic and love stories and catty female competition. I remember thinking WTF? Superman is flying around saving the world and Supergirl who has the same powers gets this bullshit story? It was very disappointing.
To be fair, the filmmakers took for granted that boys would go see a _Superman_ spin-off movie, regardless, and were trying to appeal to girls with the romance/magic/female rival, which, let's face it, are cinematic tropes that are popular with many women. Around the same time, Sigourney Weaver's now-iconic 'Ellen Ripley' character was kicking ass in James Cameron's _Aliens._ She was even Oscar-nominated for her awesome performance.
if you want to see Helen Shaver in a better/wacky film then you might want to check out Birthday Cake, i think it was 2013, there is a scene where she might bring you to tears but right afterwards you might die from laughter, just remembering it i am finished
oh and the film has lizard goddess Jane Badler playing herself, but BE WARNED you will never be able to unwatched this film
Zack Snyder Superman movie are much worse than Superman 4. Zack Snyder Superman is not Superman with all do respect to Hebry Cavil who got screwed by Zack Snyder.
Get an ac in your room man.
The story is idiotic, other than that, it's a nice movie. 😛😜🤪
