What a great idea! I’m thinking of (re)using aluminum drink cans for the metal because in my family we seem to have a steady supply. Once I cut a seam and remove the can ends light sanding should remove any printed graphics on the out side of the can. Thank you Herrick!
If you don't have an anvil, I think it would work pretty good punching into then endgrain of a block of 4x4, 4x6 or the endgrain of a chunk of firewood.

A sledge hammer sometimes works as a makeshift anvil. Thanks for the tip on making tags!
