  • There are many ancient Shiva temples in Alirajpur district. One of them is the Pandava period Shiva temple located in Mahalgaon of Sondwa tehsil. Earlier this temple was in Roligaon on the banks of river Narmada but due to the backwaters of Sardar Sarovar, the Archaeological Department restored the temple to Mahalgaon near Kulwat from Roligaon.
Shiva temple was built by Bhojraj with the help of Bhil tribals.
According to the Department of Archeology, this temple, built in the Bhumij style, belongs to the 11-12 century era. The kings of Alirajpur state have been tribal kings before 15th century. In the 15th century, Rajput king Ananddev defeated Walia Bhil and captured Alirajpur. Built in the Parmar style, this temple may have been established by the Bhil king under the direction of Raja Bhoja (1010-1055 BCE) as Raja Bhoj has been famous in history for the construction of temples. Since the shulpani bush area is still famous. Therefore, in the 11-12th century it was impossible to build a temple without the help of the local Bhil tribe.
These temples built in the Bhumij style, a sub-style of the Nagara style, are unique due to their fine craftsmanship. The summit of the temple is made of brick. The statues of Tripurantaka Shiva, Bhairava, Chamunda, Ganesh and Gauri carved on the walls of the temple are distinctive because of their arts.
Statues of Hanumanji, Ganesh ji, Parshwanath, Vishnu etc. are also located in the temple complex.
