Karla Ortiz is an internationally recognized award-winning artist. With her exceptional design sense, realistic renders, and character-driven narratives, Karla has contributed to many big budget films, including Jurrasic World, World of Warcraft, Rogue One: A Starwars Story, Marvel's Thor 3, Black Panther, and most notably her design of Doctor Strange for Marvel's Doctor Strange.
Karla's work is also recognized in the Fine Art world, showcasing her figurative and mysterious art in notable galleries, such as Spoke Art, Hashimoto Contemporary, Nucleus Gallery, Thinkspace and Arludik in Paris.
She currently lives in San Fransisco with her cat, Bady.

Karla's advice is beautiful, and incredibly strong. But! I do think she quite missed the point! xD
When people say "I want to work on finding a style", they often mean "I want to work on finding a *memorable* style". I think the most knowledgeable artist in the world, might also possess the most forgettable "style" of illustration. "Take a photo, it'll last longer". What I believe Karla would have done well to cover, would be about precisely why people get so excited, when it comes to the discussion of "art styles", per se. It's honestly silly, that she thinks it's silly! xD "Art style" specifically refers to the subjective *characterful* elements, to any artwork. The qualities that distinguish it from photographic reality.
In my opinion, the answer to "How do I find my art style?", comes down to learning to communicate universal sensual emotion. In the abstractest, yet most commonly relatable way. Not only constructing forms, perspective, light & shadow, but also the chaotic emotional aestheticism that is just so crucial to any piece of storytelling. In my general experience, understanding the non-linear [even absurd!] side of sensual communication is gonna be what inspires the emphasis on individuality, personality, exaggeration, and most notably, *memorability* of an "art style".
Generally, this can be done through experimentation and exploration, opposed to study and repetition. Getting to the heartest root of what inspires you to EXPRESS yourself, rather than just "draw high-quality pictures".
And you totally missed the fact that she made exactly your point. She says that @ 2:15 but with less "fancy" words.. Literally, technique and exploration. You are exactly what she has in mind when she says "it's kinda silly". All your verbosity is kinda silly because it's pointless. Searching for a style is pointless because style is just the way you apply the techniques to portray your own vision. And everyone has a vision...hence a style. Whether that style is "memorable" or not, that's not for you to decide, but whether you are capable of put your vision to paper, that depends totally on technique. You cannot have any style whatsoever without technique, even if your style only demands the simple technique of grabbing a bottle of paint and splatter a canvas with it.
This! Not only is her art very inspiring to me but hearing her talk about real life things, giving advice, etc. Just helps even more
She's so honest, her smile is cute 🥺, and most of all, don't worry about your style. That's something I learned from her. Just learn the techniques and get better...

I agree Karla, just work on your craft...style will (eventually) take care of itself. I was a jazz musician for 50 years and everybody in jazz (students) always asked the same thing. But as long as you work on your craft, you don't need to worry about style...it will happen on its own.
