This was honestly super helpful, and honestly really needed. Harvard is literally my dream school also. I do have some question though. I just started 9th grade and I have a pretty good start. I have all A’s and hopefully I can sustain that. One thing i’m wondering is if 2 AP’s is good enough for 9th grade. There aren’t really many options and I could only take 2 this year. Should I expect more to open up as I go on? How many AP’s should I aim to have by the end of highschool? Also i’m not in the highest math class. I’m in honors geometry and I feel like I should be in honors algebra 2 but i’m never going to have the option to advance into the higher level. Is that going to be important or am I stressing to much about that. Another thing that I am wondering is that I feel I fit the athlete archetype. I play very competitive squash and my dream is to be recruited into the harvard varsity squash team. I have attended the harvard summer squash camp, and met the coach multiple times. One of the players on the varsity team is from my neighborhood and also my coach. Do you think these are good access points to increase my chances to join? Also i’m trying to get into college by having great grades/academics and excelling at squash. Do you think if I devote myself to those that would be good? Should I do something else too? I’m currently an average squash player. I do think I have the drive and what it takes to get better and get to the top, and I am on track to do that based of my goals, but I feel like I should have another plan to get to harvard based on the other 2 archetypes in case I realize it doesn’t work out at like the start of 11th grade?
Absolutely amazing! Thanks so much for your message. My advice is for your AP classes, just take as many as you can each year. If you can only take 2 in Year 9 that is fine and Harvard will factor that in based on what is available at your school. And Squash is definitely your best avenue to get into Harvard. I would go all in on Squash and train every single day. Treat it like you are a professional athlete and rise to the top of the ranks. Sport is the best avenue to getting into Harvard and you definitely should lean into Squash. I hope this helps :))

@@jackanderson606Ok, thanks. That’s probably what i’ll do. I’m already training like that, so I guess i’ll just keep going then. Thanks!
Where is that google form you talked about at the end🧐 Maybe i'm restricted because of where i currently reside but can i have the link so i can try to get it to work?
i don’t know what i would call my DREAM school but there are plenty of universities id be over the moon about if i got accepted :)) I want to pursue medicine (not 100% sure what to major in haha), any advice/suggestions as to what schools i could look into? Edit: i live in Texas and my parents want me to stay local for support and to save money, but out of state isn’t a deal breaker
It's just if you want to go to a place like Harvard. But that's amazing that you are in middle school. If you start early, you will have very high chances of success :))
hey there, I got around 70% in 9th, 90% in 10th and am going to start 11th soon and i can def get 95% in 11th and 12th grade. I plan on trying to write a research paper by the end of my senior year (it is aviation related, as that is my passion) and *hopefully* get it published in a local journal or something, although im not too sure about actually having it published. I did my 9th and 10th in india so i have basically no ECs like clubs etc other than winning best delegate in 10th grade MUN. I plan on doing lots of volunteer/ community work and also plan on doing a few internships + olympiads. Im terrible at sports though :( although i recently started guitar lessons! finally, il try joining clubs, and sports in the two years i have left. Do you think it is feasible for me to apply to t30, t20 or even t10 colleges and have a chance of getting in? ( Im not too sure abt my SAT or ACT but im confident i can do well in those. )
Absolutely! It’s feasible with your strong academic record and the future plans you outlined. You can absolutely get into top schools with your hard work and passion. Just keep pushing as hard as you can :))
Hi Jack! I wanted to ask if mastering a musical instrument falls into one of the archetypes you talked about and if it does to what extent must it be mastered to be considered competitive.
Musical instruments are tough because you truly need to be one of the best in the country if you want to stand out. You can definitely do it, but you need to be exceptional
Awww thankyou so much! I would probably say these three are the most valuable archetypes. The other's would be like the 'student leader' who is school captain and holds lots of student body positions. Or the 'student academic' that wins all the science or math competitions.
Wait for me to come back, after screaming "Mom, Dad, I've been accepted to Harvard, with full financial aid and stipendy!!!" (I'm still 8 th grade tho, and I don't know which subject to go for, no fields chosen yet.)
Wow that's amazing! Definitely just focus on cold emailing universities and research institutions and professors to see if there is any voluntary work you can do :))
bro im from perth too i was told that it would be almost impossible to get into an ivy league if your from a different country and your not doing anything exceptional in an extracurriculur like even if you get a 99.5 atar they would reject you, what advice do you have for me to get into one of these colleges, im going into year ten right now im smart but dont try hard which will change this year anyways would you recommend i go for the research pathway or entrepreneurship pathway? and any other advice you could give? Thanks
Hey it's definitely possible! Great to hear you are from Perth. My mate got into UPenn from Perth and another I know got into Yale and then another to Cambridge. It's definitely possible if you pick a passion project and go all in on it :))
just a question im more a kind of tech guy do you think if i developt my own blockchain which im working on at the moment (close to finish) i have a chance
Hey, I'm midway through my junior year of high school. I've gotten good grades overall and am currently in doing all of my classes through the Collegiate program. Is it too late for me to try for Ivy League?
@ Thank you, Jack, I would, but calling is not really my thing as of right now because errrrr speech issues and terrible anxiety over it. But in the coming months, I will! And thanks again! I’ll be sure to bookmark it :p
Hello there, Wanted to ask what if I have a mix of both entrepreneurship and research based activities ( and both are exceptional and relating to my main passion of poetry) ? Your video was very useful ❤
Aww thankyou so much! And that is absolutely amazing to hear! I had both research and entrepreneurial activities aswell, so there is no harm if you are excelling in both :)) My advice would be to pick a stream however when writing your personal statement just to streamline your interests and make it easy for the admissions panel to understand your ambitions :))
Just a question, I live abroad as a canadian expat where I don't have access to research facilities or programs, or the ability to build a business and am not athletically gifted but I have strong grades and am doing Duke of Edinburgh gold award program as well as volunteering in my school lab and a few other things. Can I still get in, just say yes or no and give it to me straight.
For me getting to MIT is not a dream, but an aim. Because dreams are seen whilst we sleep, meanwhile aims are achieved. I am currently in standard 9th and my final exams are soon. I am quite confident that I would be able to score a percentage of about 96% as this is what my score was in previous grades and the score I got after solving sample papers, so grades are not an issue for me. But the problem comes with extra-curriculars. Since I am an Indian student, we do not have any proper clubs in schools. My parents are also from a poor background, so they cannot afford to send me to a school that does. I am a mix of a Research and an Athletic Archetype, but I do not know whether good grades and winning a few regional tournaments would help me? Also I am preparing hard for the Indian National Mathematics Olympiad, but again, I am worried whether it would be enough or not. Whenever I see other applicants I get a bit demotivated to see how they are achieving humongous feats at age 10, meanwhile I have done nothing extraordinary at age 15. I love mathematics and physics, and want to pursue them in college, I have even practiced grade 12 math, but that is where my personality ends. I do not have any other proper interests, maybe badminton and coding, but how do I stand out? Also if I do get accepted, can I truly get 100% scholarship? if so then how? I really really hope you can help me Sorry for writing a big essay, but MIT / any other great college is what my parents want from me. They are even ready to send me for Olympiad coaching (which I do not need anyways ), that is how dedicated they are to send me to a good US college. Please help me, how can I present extracurriculars when my school has no clubs? I would be highly thankful ❤
Oh, hi, I have the exact same story and I'm an Indian I'm struggling with the extracurricular part too, not to mention my I want to apply to a US university because I love research and india sucks at every educational field except medical(I guess). Even the engineers are not industry ready, no innovation, no enthusiam no research etc
@arch-linux-user-314 by the way you have some time to indulge in extracurricular, and you seem to have a confident personality unlike me , I was very shy and introvert( even till now I'm much like that) so, go try extracurriculars and try only that which you like don't let them think that you have done something just for the application, you are in 9th, don't worry about 10th grade you will score good(provided you will continue this grades) I'm telling this because I was scoring very less untill my 10th mid year but scored pretty well in my 10th. So do indulge in extracurriculars. Unlike you I don't have time , I'm in 12th now and have lot of exams including practical(which just finished), boards and jee in 2-3 days.
This looks like way too much prepperation. What if my dream school isn't Ivy League? I feel like this is like Ivy League level preparation and if I am going to maybe another university which is easier to get into, do I have to put in this much time and effort?
Hey if your goal isn't the Ivy League then you will be fine without doing all of this preparation. My advice would just be to get decent grades and have a few hobbies and extracurricular interests :))
Im trying to get into MIT, and Im do extremely well at Math. Im taking College Pre-Calculus and Honors College Calculus in 9th grade, but Im not sure what math courses I should take in grades 10,11,12. I was thinking AP Calculus BC, but that would be for 10th grade.
I have a question: I am currently in a program for students who excel in their studies, in the country where I live. I am working in collaboration with one of the best universities in the country, in order to eventually write a thesis. The subject I'm currently working on is not very interesting to me, but I have no option to change, and I don't think I'll want to continue in this subject after high school, and study it at university. Does this research work still count towards my admission? Will I have to continue studying this specific subject, which I have no passion for, in order to get into one of the ivy leagues?
In American universities you are not bound by your intended major that you declare on your application. Not until you formally declare your major. So, it wouldn’t be hard to choose something else to study.
Hey you should definitely finish the thesis but you can definitely change your mind once you are at university. I have done that with lots of my ECs. Just use them to have a strong resume and incorporate them into your personal statement, but always follow your passions as they change.
That's a great question. For research you just need to cold email alot of research institutions and professors to see if there is any voluntary research available. For entrepreneurship, you need to pick an issue you are passionate about, think of a solution you can create or student group you can create and then try to build it out as a student club at your highschool ☺
Hi, I’m from Afghanistan and the schools are closed here for girls and we don’t access to education. Do u know some schools which i can apply for. I wanna study in Oxford so first i need to finish my school but because of the current government I can’t. I really need ur helppp.😕🙏🙏🙏
Absolutely! You just need to focus on putting in consistent work every single day towards building out your archetype. You will be amazed what you can do in the space of the year if you are consistent and also take advantage of the holiday periods to grind ☺
@@jackanderson606 I really appreciate your response, I'll write it somewhere so I'm constantly reminded.. thank you so much for sharing some of your time with us 🙂✨
You should really clarify that you applied to graduate school. I don’t know much about graduate school admissions, so I won’t speak to how accurate your claims are for that, but most of this advice is incorrect or misleading for students applying to Ivy League colleges.
I'm a freshman and am currently considering NYU as my first option. I plan to major in sports management and was wondering if you have any tips on a general path to achieve that. Specifically, what extracurriculars are best for it from a general standpoint?
Oh wow! That sounds like an amazing dream. Perhaps the best thing to do is go all in on your favourite sport. I'm not sure if NYU does athletic recruitment though. The other option is to build extracurriculars that align with sports management such as building a sports club or not-for-profit, or even running a bunch of fundraisers based on you doing significant sporting endeavours ☺
Good luck. I got into NYU (in 2020) but decided to attend Notre Dame instead. If you stick to your ecs, keep good grades, and write meaningful essays you will be setting yourself on a good path.
@@josebartolorodriguez Thank you! Could you give me some potential insight on the SAT? Just how important is getting an amazing score? Is it detrimental that I have a good one to get in or no? Thanks.
@@CUTLETSISMYGOAT my perspective from watching a lot of videos, reading articles from prep scholar, and scrolling through subreddits dedicated to college admissions was that as long as your sat/act score was within the range of accepted students’ test scores, you were good. It sort of served as a first step/filter just to justify that you were at least qualified academically (and back then race also mattered in what an acceptable test score was because of affirmative action). But, it was never going to be the make or break it between whether you get in. The make or break was the rest of your story - your extracurriculars and essays. I also remember using an online website (free) that calculated your probability of getting into colleges based on your test scores, extracurriculars, grades, essays (and also there were volunteers who would read your essays and my guy gave helpful feedback), and demographics. I don’t remember what the website was but it was actually quite accurate back then, so if I remember it I’ll let you know. I got into all the schools where they gave me >50% probability of getting in: Georgia Tech, NYU, USC, and Notre Dame.
i am in 11th grade , soon will be in 12th . could u tell me what all things i can do( for archetypes and essay etc...) within 3 to 4 months as i will be spending studying for jee mains and advance .
My advice would be to focus on writing excellent essays because it might be a little too late to do signficant extracurriculars within 3 - 4 months. The other option is just to start a student club at your highschool as that can still be seen as significant even if it was only recently ☺
Hey Jack, great video! Would it be possible to make a vid on how to build a real and impactful nonprofit organisation? I am also a student from Aus (syd) and you tips would be so helpful. Ty :)

This comment is a reminder that if i dont get into Harvard 3 years from now, i'm a waste of time.
Nooo you aren't a waste of time. I wish you all the best in your Harvard dream, but focus on appreciating the person you grow into in the process rather than the end result :))

Hello from Turkiye!!❤
Hey Patric! It's great to hear from you ☺
I just found out I got accepted to Neuroscience!!!
Also I'm really good at a battle royale video game. Does that count as an extracurricular?
unless you are winning competitions it probably doesn't count :))
Thanks!

Dude, u really helped me! Im an immigrant student. Is there any other Archetypes that can be as same as valuable as the ones that you said?
Awww thankyou so much! I would probably say these three are the most valuable archetypes. The other's would be like the 'student leader' who is school captain and holds lots of student body positions. Or the 'student academic' that wins all the science or math competitions.
Wait for me to come back, after screaming

Hi. I would like to clarify what those volunteer bases, 50k funding are. What are the research placements? Is it something done at school?
Research placements can be done through cold emailing univerisities. And the not-for-profit can just be created as a student club at your school :))
Just a question, I live abroad as a canadian expat where I don't have access to research facilities or programs, or the ability to build a business and am not athletically gifted but I have strong grades and am doing Duke of Edinburgh gold award program as well as volunteering in my school lab and a few other things.
I really really hope you can help me
Sorry for writing a big essay, but MIT / any other great college is what my parents want from me. They are even ready to send me for Olympiad coaching (which I do not need anyways ), that is how dedicated they are to send me to a good US college. Please help me, how can I present extracurriculars when my school has no clubs? I would be highly thankful ❤

How do you start as a student entrepeneur or student researcher? What do you do? Is there anyone whom I can reach out to for funding?
That's a great question. For research you just need to cold email alot of research institutions and professors to see if there is any voluntary research available. For entrepreneurship, you need to pick an issue you are passionate about, think of a solution you can create or student group you can create and then try to build it out as a student club at your highschool ☺
