I’m glad you were finally able to make this! An important assumption in this calc is you’ll finish every single product in full. I think the easiest assumption for me is 1 dollar -> 1 use. If I want to buy a $45 item, can I honestly say I’ll use it 45 times or more per year to ensure the cost is at most $1 per use? This is pretty easy decision making for drugstore items that cost like $12 but some eyeshadow palettes can get up to $80 and it’s genuinely difficult to imagine committing 80 days of the year to 1 eyeshadow palette when I already have a bunch.
This is not how you calculate the cost per use for a product with the assumption that you will use every single product in full. You should change the thumbnail and title.
This is so interesting! The biggest surprise to me is how much the total cost adds up for a full face. Especially considering what you’ve shown in other videos for total wears per product (usually a lot) and how long it takes to finish something, I would have thought a full face was cheaper!
Hey I was really hoping u would include the number of uses per product too. People may not necessarily buy the product at the same price ( u can get it on discount, I don’t live in the US, so prices are different) …. But including uses per product at least helps the viewer imagine how much use they can get out of the product
I'd love it if you could do this too Tash, please. Any chance you could add the weights of the products also? So if we don't have the same products we could at least gauge the number of uses by weight?
Following up on the comments re: the Mecca Max "50 cent face" controversy happening in Australia and New Zealand -- the channel BEAUTY NEWS has an excellent video breaking down the controversy and providing insight on the challenges/circumstances faced by Australian and New Zealand beauty consumers. Beauty News is run by Kat/kitschsnitch and Hailey O and they're two of my favorite beauty RUclipsrs who I have followed for years at this point. I don't personally track strict number of uses on my products, but I have such a small collection of things that I can have a good estimate of how many months of "regular"/"routine" use I can get based on my inventory spreadsheet, and then compare things. It's helping me determine what areas I may want to reduce my spending. For example, I really don't care to shell out money for high-end or luxury mascaras and brow products anymore when I get equivalent usage and performance out of drugstore products.
This could not uave had better timing, given what's going pn with Mecca's "50¢ face" over in Australia! I've never seen any content creator that dedicates so much time to collecting data, and then to present it like this?! Interactively, multiple brands and sizes, doing all the maths for us?! Unbelievable 👏👏👏
I loved this ! I haven’t purchased anything in the past year and that has also everything to do with not doing RUclips or consuming RUclips videos anymore due to being focused on work related topics … you are the first video I watched in about 10 months and what an eye opener. Love your videos ! Miss everything about this community ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I used up the Tarte Color Corrector as well it was 17 cents per use on my end :) Kosas full size concealer was at 18 cents per use and the Kosas mini at 27 cents per use... I think there was some discrepancy with the mini though because it was a deeper color therefore in the summer I used it partially for a more all over color with powder on certain days, (using much more per use). Love to see how other people's use of products stacks up.
Thank you for the concise manner you presented your makeup usage. Appreciative for the fact you were super dedicated to collecting the data. Number of uses per product would be great to account for price differences! It would be fascinating to see a collab! I would think that even within the same brand, same product, just different shades, there would be a difference in CPU.
I am so happy you were able to achieve this goal! How exciting! I wanted to add that if you buy a product, and only use it twice, the cost is much much higher. This is a reminder to use what you have already!
Incredible detail. This really encourages me to stick to drugstore products. Especially since you can get a few more products and it's still cheaper than a basic high end face. Well done and thank you for doing all this work!
This was so so interesting! I love information like this. I have often wondered which things are worth spending more money on. Personally, changing my mindset from a "buy to try" mindset to a " buy to use up" mindset has helped me curb my makeup spending. After project planning for around 10 years, I have realized, it takes ages to finish up certain products (especially blush) so I don't mind splurging on those.
I truly appreciate all the work you've put into this project ❤ not at all what I thought it would cost on either end .... I definitely want to try this ...
Wow, this has been extremely helpful. I tracked all my uses for makeup last year along with my purchases and my declutters and empties. Knowing this information on top of what I have been able to gather will help me budget very well. Thank you for putting in all the time and energy to make this video! :)
Thank you for all your tracking and data and work that went into making this!! I was a serial makeup shopper and this hit home that basically I’m throwing away enough to buy a high end coffee in nyc if I don’t use my makeup everyday!
I love everything about this video! Can't wait to be able to put my own little chart together - I've never finished an item while tracking uses so hopefully in a couple of years!
Hi! I think you can definitely do something similar weighing them before and after use, and then subtract from the weight on the package! Im not sure if I explained well lol
@bananamary5907 yeah! I've tried but I don't have a food scale at home sensitive enough - they smallest they measure is a g. Maybe I'll get a small items scale that can measure in mg!
wow what a good job. hats of to you. i find these kind of videos so eye opening of what you actually get with your products. thanks for cheering me up, it is snowing so bad her and i just got home from grocery shopping and a half an hour shuffling snow that was up to my knees. but you always cheer me up. hope your friday has been good and hope your weekend to come is gonna be great to. stay safe in this winter months.
For that we need to go at the end of our products 💛 this is very useful, my nerdy brain is wow, the Excel doc 🙌 nice reminder to use the product we have until the end!
Honestly, that Nyx Glitter Glue is so never ending, that at this point, I have a feeling, that it is paying me to use it🤭. I use it every time I do my makeup and it still looks untouched. It has been years... 😆
No kidding. I mean i should incinerate mine since my sister used it for several years then gave it to me and now ive used it for several years. Its been in my family from when i was in middle school to a college junior.
I find this so fascinating. I don't track as meticulously as you do but I am a panner so if something has usage goals which I like to do from time to time with certain products for science I know for example which ones to buy or avoid based on how long they last. I also think overall this can be a wake up call to want to pan or finish your items instead of just to keep buying because things go bad and its a sunk cost meaning you can't get that money back. At the end of the day it also is up to us to vote with our dollars as the costs keep creeping up so much! And if a product is good I will keep buying it if I agree it's worth the price for how long it takes to use it. If it doesn't I seek an alternative unless I can't find one. Most of the time I can.
I love this video in so many ways. My most expensive item in my personal makeup kit is 105 USD, however it lasts me exactly 400 uses. I tried for one year to replace it with 3 other items to get the same look and that cost 90 USD and frustrated me. So, I caved and bought a new one at 105 USD and spilled some on first application! 😂 Happier now and looking to decant the product into a new container.
Wow, one could potentially be “spending” $200+ per MONTH on wearing makeup! That’s nuts! Would be really neat if you averaged the cost/use of the product category. Like “drugstore eyeshadow primer” would be X¢/use, etc, so people could plug in the numbers regardless of brand. And maybe you could have a Google form where people could help you track it and submit their numbers too!
Oh dang I hadn't thought to add it up to a monthly cost! 😅😅 And a community spreadsheet sounds like a great idea! I'll think on the logistics and see if I can implement something like that, thanks! ❤️
I think @ErinTaylorWrites would have enough data to also do this exercise, and I think her nerdy brain would thrive on it! It would be great if multiple panners could do this so we have as big a test pool as possible. Love a good spreadsheet analysis, thanks so much for the effort you put in here.
why does the full face of makeup have 3 all-over lip products? just lip gloss and lipstick i can understand but how/why would one even incorporate all 3 into one look? is this really that common?
@syp123 i mean in this case it's not even that, it's lipstick, lip gloss & a tinted lip balm. lip liner at least is usually just used to line the lip, in this case it's 3 things that are all used to color the whole lips in
Hi, everyone! I should have mentioned it in the video, but my thought process was that lip products are something I reapply throughout the day. Maybe a lipstick when I first apply, a lipgloss later on when the lipstick has faded, and maybe a 3rd lip product to touch up. That's something that can be removed or customized using the data I shared in the spreadsheet. ❤️
I know women who do apply all three, multiple times a day. It comes down to habit and formulation. I am a two product gal during the day and a lip glossy treatment at home.
Looks like you put a lot of effort into tracking the cost per usage. For me personally, it’s only worth spending the $$ if you are actually able to finish the product that you bought, if not then I think it’s not worth it. At the end of the day, once you bought the product then that money is gone and there’s no justifying it by tracking cost per use.
You're right, the money you pay for makeup is a sunk cost! I still think tracking uses has been beneficial for me to make smarter purchasing decisions in the future, plus it's just a fun exercise to do ❤️

I think that's a really cool way to approach makeup!
This is not how you calculate the cost per use for a product with the assumption that you will use every single product in full. You should change the thumbnail and title.
I like the way you think about this subject. Thanks for sharing! ❤
This is so interesting! The biggest surprise to me is how much the total cost adds up for a full face. Especially considering what you’ve shown in other videos for total wears per product (usually a lot) and how long it takes to finish something, I would have thought a full face was cheaper!
I agree, I was also surprised by the totals! ❤️

That's a good point! I'll work on adding # of uses to that shared spreadsheet. ❤️
I'd love it if you could do this too Tash, please. Any chance you could add the weights of the products also? So if we don't have the same products we could at least gauge the number of uses by weight?
Such meticulous work! Very eye opening. Thank you so much!
Thank you! ❤️❤️

Oooh I bet different shades of the same product would have different # of uses, hadn't thought of that! ❤️
Awesome video. Very timely given the Mecca ‘50 cent a face’ campaign controversy in Australia :)
I am so happy you were able to achieve this goal! How exciting! I wanted to add that if you buy a product, and only use it twice, the cost is much much higher. This is a reminder to use what you have already!
You're right! Trying to reduce the cost per wear by wearing a makeup product more is a good strategy ❤️
Very timely considering the Mecca debacle!
(see Robert Welsh or Beauty News)

Have you calculated with the full price? Because I only buy make up in sale with at least 20% off, but often it's up to 50% off.
why does the full face of makeup have 3 all-over lip products? just lip gloss and lipstick i can understand but how/why would one even incorporate all 3 into one look? is this really that common?
Yea I never understood it but I see it all the time; a lip liner, lipstick, lipgloss. I don’t get why they don’t just use a more saturated lipgloss

I can't promise they are universal, but I still think they were interesting enough to share! ❤️
