You might want to try a polymer rather than air-dry clay. Anything sculpey is a good place to start, but fimo and premo clays are my personal favorites
Do you put a bit water when your sculpting with the clay? 🤔 I actually just started yesterday but I don't know if you need to use a small amount of water to blend it in?

You could try das or mont morte and try watching Tina le's clay for beginners vid to find out how to prevent cracks

I use the Mod Podge, it's cheap and the results are good.
