Small thing mr top hat... it was a 1mb ROM not RAM - for king of the fighters... the difference is that certain game assets are on the ROM cart wheras the RAM for xmen vs street fighter is just pure memory space thus can be used on other titles wheras the ROM cart is exclusive to that game it came with. Great vid tho.

Outraged with how much better the Saturn version was, and how it only released in Japan. The Saturn was *the* Capcom 2D fighting system. It simply ran all of them better and most were arcade perfect. It also had *the* best fighting game pad of all time when the second version (or default Japanese) controller released. This was the second most played game I had on the system, only right behind Alpha 2.

I don't know... this is the first time I've heard any controversy or anger in regards to the series... and I'm pretty much the same age as Top Hat. Still watching the video to find out (read your comment in a commercial break, lol). Hoping its not just a clickbait headline (overuse of capslock is a typical warning though).
I thought most people didnt even know about it at the time. I didn't know about Capcom collaborating with Marvel until I found Marvel vs Capcom on the PS1, which I instantly loved, but I didnt like the gameplay as much as other Capcom fighters.
The only anger I ever found towards the entire series is, after the popularity of MvC2, is that its popularity in the arcades seemed undeserved by some people because it was apparently very unbalanced because of all the characters, plus Capcom "cheaped out" by still reusing so many old sprites from 5+ year old games.
15 min into the vid and still nothing about this so-called "outrage" in regards to XvsSF...
OK, 20 minutes in - finally, it turns out its just a few magazine reviews that wrote exageratedly negative but well deserved reviewed for the PS1 port of the game. Outrageous...

Xmen vs Street Fighter was not just good because of the cross over but also because of how great it looked with huge sprites and special effects.
If Capcom would have ported SFA2 characters directly without upgrades then the Xmen charachters would have totally killed the SF charachters so I guess it was part of their balancing.

Awesome video. As a hardcore Sega Saturn fan, it was my favorite system of the 90s due to imports, I have to chime in. I’ve played the arcade version religiously as I was fortunate to have a few arcade units near me. Immediately upon playing this game in late 1996 in NYC, I knew with absolute certainty that an accurate port on the PlayStation was a technical impossibility.
Two minor corrections: you called Sabretooth, Sabrewulf. Also, I vividly remember buying the King of Fighters 95 port in early 1996. It was the first Sega Saturn game ever to promise a near arcade perfect port, due to the use of the Sega Saturn cartridge slot. However, this was a 1MB ROM cart, not the familiar 1MB RAM cart. This cart was only used for King of Fighters 95 to store sprites, frames, etc. We did get a 1MB RAM cart that allowed for near arcade perfect 2D ports on the Sega Saturn (Japan only), that could be used with multiple games like Metal Slug, Marvel Superheroes, etc. However, it wasn’t until the release of the 4MB RAM cart with this game that we got arcade perfect ports on the Sega Saturn. Trust me, I used to have this game and X-Men vs Street Fighter in my own personal arcade cabinet (CPS 2 versions) and the Sega Saturn versions running in native RGB on a Sony PVM 2030, and they were absolutely pixel perfect to my eyes. There’s no wonder that the amazing Capcom swan song to the Sega Saturn, Street Fighter Zero 3, is the most coveted port available. That 4MB cart was a true revelation.
Awesome videos. They give this 38 year old gamer nostalgia. 👍

I personally was fucking in love with this game. Back in the 90's when our mall was still actually popular, I was almost always in the arcade area whenever my mom brought me along to go shopping, and spending dozens of tokens playing this one and only game lol. X-men vs. Street Fighter will always bring back nostalgic memories for me.

It was no secret that the 2D fighters of the time were better on Saturn, some of the reviewer comments are quite harsh though, i'd be happy to play the psx version over nothing at all. look at the home ports of mortal kombat, alot further from the arcade version compared to the quality of the psx xmen vs sf. good video.

Marvel super heroes for the Saturn also has a 1MB ram mode and they left it in the American version. Not quite as life changing as the 4mb,but more animation is never a bad deal.

For the life of me, I could never understand why the Saturn port was missing some animation, but, yeah, the Capcom 4 MB RAM cart really did help the Saturn port of MSH a little more.

I still feel that even with the 4MB ram cart, the game still plays very slow compared to MSH vs. SF.

@@Loader2K1 The game only used the 1MB RAM cart. It was merely compatible with the 4MB RAM cart at best. Vampire Savior needed the 4MB RAM cart to store every animation frame needed for a match and it has far less going on with smaller characters than Marvel Super Heroes, so it should be no surprise that the Saturn port of MSH is still missing animation frames even with the 1MB RAM cart.

@@Greybush46322 Saturn MSH was Capcom's first RAM-cart-is-optional game, so I'm going to assume they really didn't optimize what is basically a second version of the game when the RAM cart is present. The situation improved dramatically with Cyberbots and Pocket Fighter where the base mode version and expansion RAM version perform equally smoothly.

They were 4 new characters for this game. Aside from the ones you listed, Cammy's SFA design debuted here. She'll join the SFA games 'till Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold about a year later. :)

I loved this game, after playing Children of the Atom, Ryus super Hado just felt natural hitting those 3 buttons all at once, the super jumps were great. I loved this game so much, Black dressed Ryu and Juggernaut was my team.. I saw SFIII in London and was blown away but it wasn't until the Dreamcast released them all that I got to check out all these games.. I did play Alpha 1 in the aracdes though and again, it felt natural and easy to play - they did some great work back then, SFIII is only really being appreciated now or at least in the last few years. No bad thing, it was just super advanced is all.. Saturn and Dreamcast = Capcom & fighters dream..

I'll never forget as a kid first seeing this arcade game in a movie theater. I just...couldn't BELIEVE what I was seeing.

I loved Street Fighter. I loved Capcom’s X-Men, but I never thought we’d see both in a game together. I still remember that day I walked into my local arcade and it was on a big 50-60” screen. And I was just all “wow”. Then I saw it was tag team and I was all “WoW!” Then I saw Chun-Li, Cammy, Rogue AND Storm and was all “... awesome.”

The saddest part of this review was just how Sega left all their best games in Japan. If they would've brought their 2D games, and especially the RAM cart memory expansion to the West, I wouldn't have ended up buying a Neo Geo CD in 1998. In hindsight I guess I should've just bought a Japanese Saturn. But still, this stuff should've been on our shelves. The blunders that Sega of Japan and America made at that time... it's like they wanted to fail.

True. I wound up importing a Japanese Saturn to play some of the VS. games (MSH vs. SF) and Japanese games. It wasn't to difficult.

I applaud the high level of research and enthusiasm seen in this video. Thank you for putting so much thought and effort in producing this video. We go through life with so many questions and so few answers.
This video is one of those rare times we get an answer like wtf happened to SF vs X-Men on PlayStation.
