This B minor rhapsody is my favorite of Brahms' solo piano pieces. I performed this piece in my junior year. Yes I interpret it quite orchestrally, with a fair amount of damper pedal, much like Perahia does here, though I've done it with less rubato and slightly different dynamic choices in spots.Very nicely recorded here, it sounds utterly spontaneous. Thanks for uploading this for everyone to enjoy!
Murray Perahia has the unique ability to canvas sound as a complete entity. He is one of the most elegant and musically well mannered pianists of our time. I so adore Brahms and I so adore this!
I heard someone play this and they took the last page slowly. Ever since that is how I like to play it - so misterioso and ravishing (the only word that applies)! LOL This is quintessential Brahms- the awkward chords, distinct fingering (love the thumbs on the black notes!), syncopated octaves, lush melodies and perfect structure. Bravo to a fantastic performance of one of the Brahm's best.
This piece by Murray is so "charming". No matter how busy and/or stressed out I am, I find myself lost momently in his beautiful performance whenever I play this video.
God!!! I love his performances so much!!!
Thank you Perahia for sharing with us your magnificent talent!!!!
Considering Perahia's affection for Brahms's piano music I find it rather puzzling why he has not recorded the Brahms Piano Concertos.
Profound interpretation. Orchestral approach but with timing flexibility afforded to solo piano. I am blown away by this performance!!!!!
amazing. so pompous in the right places and the bass is brought out so well. love the deep bass notes in brahms!!
the best performance of this brahms b minor rapshody and this is one of the bests pianists alive .
ok
extraordinary and special. Beautiful
Yes
I love this music
There is a magical lyrical passage starting at 2.54. Many thank for sharing this encore!
@PhillipLWilcher Agree! I would also love to hear what he could do to the Brahms concertos!
So well realized. This is the best performance that I have found of this work.
Indeed
Favorite version
Bravo ! .... so much more than words :-o
Meravigliosa esecuzione
@bottlepiano I believe Perahia has now recorded this Rhapsody twice in the studio. But to hear him 'live' is all together higher experience!
love this
Excellent performance. Grossartig:)
True! And I was so lucky to be in a master class, delivered by him :)
Wow, that sounds like my version of heaven. Hope you had a good time
this is pure romantism.(100%)
I ready for this music
@TheGreatPerahia I agree with him! In fact, I've always trusted his views and comments regarding pianists and pianism.
brtherjohn it is a H- moll
Perahia has recorded this in the studio twice. Great versions as those are THIS live performance is just that much more spontaneous...
I agree. Pity He does not play the written repeats. Notwithstanding, Perahia gives it his all. For those commenting about flexible tempi stop-start etc, are reminded that the piece is marked agitato. The central section is marked meno agitato- less agitated, suggesting to retain some tension.
Really great recording. There are so many poor renditions of this song. I definitely think it's a little jumpy at times, but the dynamics are perfect and the precision is great. A good track to learn how to play from.
Yes, in fact!
Thanks for the rubato
Agree!!!
Ispiratorio!:)
He kinda tapped out on those crescendos though... they should be one big big crescendo, not loose parts like his, or none existent at all.
The Moonwalker interesting observation
Wow. That's a lot of rubato
M.P. in special mood, very exited, maytbe too much exited. But I prefer this piece in just the same manner to play.

very stop-starty, I do miss a sense of pulse and, to be frank, he just seems to be fannying around too much
chrish12345 something along those lines
It's a rhapsody.
