Hello! I am a college student and I often find myself using not so ideal paper. I find that finer nibs work better on this sort of paper but I am a sucker for super smooth nibs. What pens have you found to be a good balance between fine and smooth? Big fan by the way.
this isn't just college students, this is a lot of places in the US
IMHO, Pilot rocks the smooth fine nibs
Metropolitan, Custom 74, Vanishing Point, all good
Lamy 2000 EF is actually quite good
Goulet EF's are pretty darn smooth
Platinum gold nibs are a bit toothy, but the EF Preppy is surprisingly smooth!

I really love the fountain pen community. I have always wanted to write with a fountain pen and with this company I can actually start. Thanks Brian, your amazing.
You generally can't go wrong with Pilot. Faber-Castell make suprisingly smooth Fine and Medium nibs . The price point is quite good, if you're looking at the Basic, or Loom.
I have found that the wing sung 3008 is surprisingly smooth. It is a Chinese pen and it is about 2-5 dollars. It is a piston filler and it works remarkably well

I recently introduced my dad into fountain pens and got him the Platinum Preppy and was impressed on the fine nib when I got a chance to test it out. Now I'm planning to get myself one or maybe a metropolitan.

Definitely seconding Brian's recommendation for Pilot pens! I got a Metropolitan in Fine because Medium wasn't available at the time, and it's pretty smooth even on my generic "school notes" type of notebook. I can only imagine how wonderful it must be on something like Rhodia paper.

I have a Conklin Duragraph Turquoise ( Which I purchase from GOULET PENS).
I bought it with the Bock #6 Extra Fine, and it was surprizing ultra smooth. You wouldn't even know it was an extra fine until you see the line width. And that was on regular paper. On Clairfontaine it was like writing on silk. It has completely spoiled me for other fine and extra fine nibs now. Not to mention the pen is so comfortable to write with, and I get compliments on the look, and writing experience all the time. It really catches peoples eyes. Clearly one of my favs.
The Goulet nibs work wonders! I switched all my Noodler's Ahab and Konrad flex nibs to Goulets. Why hadn't I done that before? Goulet nibs are magical!
The pilot metropolitan fine nib is very smooth. I bought a Lamy with a fine and it's not very smooth
Sometimes using a thinner cheap paper helps. Some seem to be harder pressed than thicker papers, which makes them less absorbent. It also makes them smoother, so there is less texture for a fine nib to catch on.
Based partially on this video I bought a Platinum Preppy for drawing. It works excellently for me. Thanks.

Luckily I convinced my boss to order a supply of Rhodia A4 dot pads which I just keep in my desk drawer for personal use :')
I love my Kaweco (Sport, Liliput) extra-fine nibs. They are very smooth. I was disappointed in the Lamy Dark Lilac extra-fine, though. It is quite scratchy, and I wish I had bought a fine nib instead. My Pilot Cosmpolitan fine nib is very smooth, and it's also very close to an extra-fine nib.
Thanks. I tried swapping nibs. I had a broad and a medium from other pens. But I am not buying another nib to replace a nib. If one extra-fine nib is scratchy, what are the chances of others being similar? I've read similar comments about the extra-fines being scratchy; wish I had known this before buying. And yes, the tape method works nicely. Thanks.
I use a Montblanc Meisterstuck 146 with an EF nib and most of my writing is on legal pad. My out of office go to pen is the Pilot Metropolitan M nib which writes very well for a steel nib pen and is a great value at $20. I don't worry about, losing, or having it stolen.
i took a jinhao 159 swapped in a nemosine fine nib and it works brilliantly on all paper ive used on. on heavier copy paper its brilliant, and on the super cheap stuff, it still works well but theres some spread and feathering (down to the cheap paper being ridic absorpant). my mainstay though for a year now.
Yeah, the Nemosine nib is nice wet-writing nib. Great option to switch out with Jinhaos. - Colin
I'm a sucker for Lamy 2000. I have both custom 74 and VP, both in fine, they are smooth and good writers, but they are no where near as smooth as my Lamy 2000 EF.
I'm personally a little reluctant to get the lamy 2000 because I already have one lamy and I couldn't really get over how it preformed when I was writing with it
Dusty Sprinkles I have dozens of safaris and al-stars. They are great writers, but the 2k is just so different (in a good way) from all the other lamy steel nib pens.

EF? Really... but medium is still the smoother nib right? I would rather have a broader 2000 and if I really need a fine one get a cheaper pen
This is an old video, however, one of my favourite non-expensive fine nib tht writes really really smooth and have had no feathering issue on any paper is Waterman Allure. Would recomend a test... Right out of the box works perfectlly, no hard start issues (Only if the nib is left up for some time, which is reasonable as the feed looses some ink), no skipping,... I have just ordered a second one just to leave it stored in my document folder so I know it is always there instead of swapping it from the desktop to the folder when I go out.
I have a FC Loom in EF, I find it to be very smooth!

my Platinum Plaisir Fine is great for cheap paper and decently smooth. It's the same nib unit of the Preppy, just with a better barrel.

Acually for me the pilot metropolitan fine doesn't work well on low quality printer paper, but for some low quality papers its actually very good. So its a try and error thing. Surprisingly my kaweco M works very well for low quality printer paper, though it is not the finest nib out there. I have lamy as well but doesn't seem to work as well as kaweco on really bad papers.
Any pen nib can be smoothened if they are rubbed against a glass I’ll be making a video soon on this

Want to give a fountain pen gift to my wife. Budget is at $50dlls or less. She is a lawyer, writes on laser printer paper with blue ink. Could you make a couple of recommendations on fountain pens that use converter, eyedropper, or any kind of refill mechanism besides cartridge. For ink, strong blue ink that doesn't feather and is relatively fast drying. Thanks.
hello I found my great grandmothers fountain pen and there is no way to disassemble it (no threads or caps) but it has a little lever that pulls out of the body to about 60 degrees from the body... Is this a squeeze converter type thing? i have no Idea but based on what i found it was sopposedly that. do you have any thoughts or knowledge? thanks

I love my Pilot Metropolitan.. I also love my Pilot e95s. I just recently got the Lamy 2000 with a m nib and so far I am not liking it. It is skipping.. Any suggestions? The place I bought it from (a local fine pen store) says they will look at it, possibly either exchange or fix it if needed.. You mentioned a sweet spot though for that pen and wondered if I just need to find it..

You propose the custom 74 often, I got a heritage 92 which is almost the same but my fine nib feel really scratchy. Any recommendations?

There's a reason my Metropolitan is my everyday carry. It's a super-smooth writer even on crappy paper, and the price means I don't have to worry too much about it getting lost or damaged (or stolen).
Would you say , the twsbi mini extra fine , is nice and smooth ? I’m really close to purchasing it but then thought about asking this first
I have one, I do hotel work so lots of writing on cheap copy paper and super thin receipt paper. It is very easy to use, no pressure required, but it definitely has feedback. You hear the pen against the paper. It’s a great pen, I love it and it’s perfect for me. But if you want to avoid something that feels “pencilish” id recommend going with a slightly larger nib size

I heartily extol the Preppies! But if i get a Metropolitan, will Platinum's blue-black work with it? I heard it was an iron-gaul ink. What would be the best bluish bottled ink for the Metro? Great vid btw.
Yeah, it'll work fine in it. You just have to maintain a pretty regular cleaning schedule as it is dye-based. But keep in mind, there pretty much isn't any black to it despite its name (www.gouletpens.com/platinum-blue-black-60ml-bottled-fountain-pen-ink/p/Plat-Ink-1203). Pilot Iroshizuku has some great blue inks; Asa Gao and Kon-Peki are both phenomenal inks. - Colin

My preppies work well on composition notebook paper, even with cartridges.

My Pilot Petit1 writes very well (writes Fine), much better than my much costlier Pilot Prera (F).
