I love this idea! I have been painting for over 60 years. Because I now have a limited income, I view my art supplies as being very precious. So precious that some of my expensive paints have dried up in the tube. That certainly is a complete waste. Thank you for inspiring me to let go of the money aspect and focus on the discovery and creative process! Hoarding my supplies until I am ready to create a finished piece has been very stifling for me. Thanks again!❤️
love this video! and i admire your confidence. the topics you talk about hold true for everyday life as well as for our creativity & art. i'm so grateful to be part of your art tribe. i always get excited when i receive emails from you. i know i'm in for a good dose of affirmations & encouragement to create. thank you, louise!
I am glad you made this video! I had a similar conversation with a friend just recently about “wasting” paint. You can’t learn if you you don’t experiment. I also use a sketchbook. It really helps me! I also use one to put a dab of color and write the brand and colors down that I use in each painting. Otherwise I never remember what went into one...😂 Great information and I enjoyed looking at your sketchbook. Beautiful thoughts on paper! What could be better! Thank you! 💕
I have been struggling so much of late with wanting time for art. I buy materials and find that i dont dedicate enough time to use them. I have recently thought well ... according to all the people around me. No one does art. (I don't sell art I'm more at home just wanting to love the progress of it). I shame myself saying I shouldn't enjoy this as a hobby. Other people's hobbies are productive and useful. Mine isnt. This video has helped me feel less guilt to dedicate time in my busy life towards art making. Thank you
OK you’ve convinced me to go back to working in a sketchbook! I’m a collage artist and tend to work on loose pieces of paper. Now I’ve realized that this puts too much pressure on me to make it “good enough to sell” all the time. I will at least allow myself some warm up time in the book each studio session. Thank you for some great ideas.
Just so helpful! Came back to painting around 4 years ago after a 25 year break but have produced practically nothing during that time. Excuse after excuse, avoidance tactics galore. Nothing but a masterpiece would do. The need to prove to myself and others that ‘I am an artist’ has been completely stultifying. Stupidly, the concept of wasting time/materials and being content to make (perhaps bad) art joyfully, and for my eyes only, never occurred to me! This is a game changer. Honestly Louise, you are a blessing! Thank you so much x
Wow! I never realized what a valuable and useful resource a sketchbook could be. I can’t wait to fill up my empty ones - now with renewed purpose. You inspire so many of us, Louise. Thank you for your gift of sharing! You’re a great mentor for us all.
Thank you! I totally agree that the only wasted paint is the paint left in the tube! But wasting talent, yes, that is profound too. Creatives really can connect with that! ❤️
OMG! I really needed to hear this right now! I’ve always, and I mean Always, felt that I’m waisting paints, waisting paper, waisting time..... I’m just realizing that the time I’m wasting, is the time I’m not doing something in my studio, scribbling, doodling, painting, drawing etc. Thank you so much for this and your other videos!!! 💕🥰👩🏻🎨❤️ BTW I just love the painting behind you in this video, as well as your other work I’ve seen. Thanks again!
You should look into Louise's Free Course this coming May 20th. She has a way of explaining and helping you find your own path. She does give pay courses also. I have taken both and am still learning!
Best pep talk ever! I’m tearing up. You’re so correct. Hanging on to fear of not being good enough is a spiral which I have not been able to free myself from over last 2 years. Although I sometimes actually do create and take some time to play, my day job (graphic design) literally sucks every last bit of energy out of me. I simply give away too much to my job perhaps? I find it more and more difficult to let my natural state of creativity take over even when I muster up the courage to face my paint, ink, pens, etc. All my ideas stay locked up in my head and remain a prisoner of my fear never to be let out. It’s enough to drive me mad at times. Your videos are a wonderful way for me to get some positive affirmations. Thank you so much!!!! (Hope all that even made sense!)
So true! I love experimenting in my sketchbooks/art journals and I love leafing through them, they bring me joy. There was a time when I would just stare at an Art Journal and never touch it because I didn't want to "ruin" it. After doing a few online free courses including yours...it freed me up. I too love using old pattern paper, I also use pages from old Bibles. Ps: i love your Newsletter. Thank you for sharing....you have helped me so much in my art journey 🤗
You’re my soul sister 🌷. I got around this by getting a sketchbook with tear-out pages. I now know if I really love something, I can easily remove and frame it. Get some student paints for your sketchbook and it won’t feel like waste
Since my heart attack last year I don't feel like I have much time to mess about. I have been focused and paint throughout the day, I am consistently learning to paint new subjects , complete as many projects as I can , usually 3 a day. Then I photo archive them , post a 15 second vid to my you tube channel , and paint over them. It's not important that I have lots of paintings, it's important that I paint alot. I don't care about marketing them, or being in an art scene, in a gallery, etc. Some of my life was spent as a commercial painter, (spray, brush , roll) expensive homes, large housing projects, condos. I did fancy faux finishes, remodeling, and learned alot about working with paints. Now I am doing it for me, like a man possessed. And finishing my coffee, to begin today's projects. Times a'wastin. Git up and paint!
@@ThisPaintingLife I retired to Costa Rica, did 20 years of psych work. I live on the side of a mountain in Boruca territory, my home is like a partially enclosed gazebo , very open to the skies, no doors or windows. It cost 3,500 dollars get built. I have 3 shot discs, arthritis , so I take alot of breaks to jabber with people.
Thank you Louise, your approach is so refreshing and I hadn't really applied the concept of experimentation and fun to sketchbooks, only as a means of sketching away from home. It also relates to your October theme after applying the first two layers and then looking at each square individually and making new decisions. You are certainly inspiring artists and igniting our creativity!!
I love peeking into other artist's sketch book. This year's FYJ course was such an eye opener for me. Thanks for giving me permission to play with all the things; without worrying about making something pretty xx
I love your videos Louise and your work too...seeing your sketchbook is inspiring...some beautiful work in there...do you ever frame any of these too?...much love🙏💜🙏
When I first started painting I bought cheap paints at a discount place. I made little progress and was frustrated with painting. I wondered if maybe painting wasn’t for me, but in my heart I knew I was supposed to make art. I scrimped on other things and bought high quality paints, brushes, and papers. What a difference good materials made.
This is great advice .I have been painting for 40 years now with lots of breaks in between.Having sold some paintings ,but never was able to make a living from it.I paint landscapes and still life, also some en plein air.but I find it very difficult sometimes, because I am self taught and had to learn the hard way by trial and error, frustration and self doubt always creeped into my work.I feel that I have wasted my life and have left it too late to make a living from my art, which was always my dream.recently I have watched Nicholas Wilton free course which made me feel good about painting again, that followed on by watching your videos Louise, which really inspired me to try abstract.which I know nothing about, but I find time just flies when I paint this way.I would love to learn more about this style of art and maybe some day get good at it.Yours Sincerely .Joan..
Well said Louise! Love your message. When buying art materials- they should be use - not on the shelf or in a drawer. Happy mistakes are where we find ourselves and what we enjoyed to create. We also discovered what we would like to learn and need to do to achieve it. Ahhh art and creativity- love it! Thank you for this crystal clear message!
Thank you! This was exactly what I needed to hear! I've been stuck in the "only can make art if I know it's really good" block and so mostly practicing fundamentals and sketches trying to only improve in order to make something "good enough" to share. Not relaxing and playing around. You're right, it does feel like wasting time. Thank you again.
Thank you, Louise, for sharing your thoughts. It's taken me a while to come to grips with just playing and experimenting with my art. I can sometimes make the most awful art but I'm always learning and gesso is my friend! Happy creating! xo
What I have discovered during the many years I have been painting is - that nothing is a waste even when it might look that way. I have had periods of time where I worked with some other medias inside art. Made stuff on the computer - made crafts or something else. Then when I return to my paintings after 6-12 months something has happened to the way I am painting. Big jumps in what I now could do - it was so significant that many times I could hardly rekognize it as something I had done. So I must agree with you the ways to becoming a better artist may seem weird or odd - but that is just the mysterious and magical ways art works. ❤️
I have really appreciating your talks and have sent a request to join your FB group so I can become more connected. I have been painting since May and my work has been florals with more recent paintings being landscapes. Listening to you has given me courage to try out abstract and to allow myself to freely express who I am and what I’m thinking. So today I stopped painting a floral I had started and without thinking about it I created an abstract. BUT how on earth do you know if what you painted is any good? How do I judge this painting?
You need to learn the principles of art-making so that you can judge. A course can be good. I also have a membership site with lost of education if you are interested.thispaintinglife.mykajabi.com/art-tribe
I have been exploring abstract art and love love love it! I just this week found out I am allergic to acrylic paint! I am so sad! Especially during Covid it’s been a feeling of accomplishment while in the house!
Oh, SO good to hear your voice again. I have missed you! Will you ever re=release the videos from the free taster course? I am SO hopeful to be able to take the paid for course next year!
It's almost like we talked about me before you decided to create this video. I must take the plunge and "waste" globs of time and paint! Abyss, here I come!

Aww thank you for your kind words Cynthia! ♥
This is probably the best 6 minute video I've ever watched! What a much needed one for me! Thank you.
I don't paint, I play guitar. Your videos are the best lessons I found this year.
Wow, thanks! I always suspected that all art comes from the same place and that all artists have the same struggles. xx
Thank you for your message. You are so right. We must fight this resistance with all our might!
This brought tears to my eyes!! Thank you💖
You’re so right.

Wasting time and paint is play time for me. It's totally fun! And I love the surprise element!

Thanks Louise! I totally agree. Playing with ideas and letting happy accidents happen is such an important part of the creative process.

Thanks Louise, this is definitely something I need to take on board. Sketchbook here I come! :)
Wonderful! Have fun :)
Just exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom, experience, and techniques. I love your teaching.
Glad it was helpful!
Delightful! I find your sketchbooks very, very inspiring; any possibility of a vlog of you turning through the pages of your sketchbooks?
I have done one of those but I may. do more!

Glad it was helpful! It's a concertina book
you lighten my heart.
thank you x
I have been exploring abstract art and love love love it! I just this week found out I am allergic to acrylic paint! I am so sad! Especially during Covid it’s been a feeling of accomplishment while in the house!
Oh no! But there is no need to stop. How about guache or watercolour or drawing media or collage? Artists create art with anything :)
Thank you so much. I feel so connected to what you are saying.
You are so welcome

God bless you, Louise! You're such an inspiration for me. xo Rachel
I am so pleased x
What an inspiring and freeing video. Thank you so so much xx
You are so welcome!
Thank you Louise. I want to know more of this. I want to paint like this. I will follow your videos .
Wonderful!
Omg thank you. I need to hear this.
You're so welcome!
I so like your view on artmaking!!!
I appreciate that!
You have spoken to me personally today. Thank you so much. X
You are so welcome
Thank you! I needed to hear that today.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you Louise. This is Linda Stewart, not Patrick. This was perfect!
You're very welcome!

Good words......lessons....
Yes absolutely By the way your sketchbooks are beautiful unlike mine messy LOL
Oh thank you but remember I'm only showing a few pages, Trust me I have messes!!
I paint out of cans from the hardware store, once done I paint over them.
I love this message.
The 4 page wide fold out sketchbook you show, what / how / where do I get a sketchbook like that?? I need this in my life!
It's a Seahwhite Octopus book
Great video!!!
Glad you liked it!
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🎨
The time and paint you *spend* in your beautiful sketchbooks isn’t a waste, it’s an *investment.* Big, BIG difference, as you clearly know. 😘
So true!
❤️❤️❤️
My name is Elana
So basically you can’t waste time doing art. Because you either become more experienced or discover something new and pleasant.
Thanks 👍
