I'm craving a Rainbow/Shadow High doll in Japanese lolita style clothes. OMG has some that's come pretty close, but there's still some work to be done! I feel they play it very safe with these lines, the clothes are very similar to one another... Which is ironic since it's all about individual style.

I mean ott sweet lolita is the trend in the lolita scene right now and it would go pretty well with RH and a goth lolita or a shiro sweet lolita would match SH
Yea the concept is very figurative in the sense that the "outcast" in classic media and even pop culture typically has a dark take on fashion. Yknow, goths. Theyre taking it in a similar route as monster high and not too literally about the fashion. I'd take the dolls with my own spin on their outfits. I do like Heather's choker and the safety pins in their hair but the rest of the line is very "fashion forward." They could have done the BRAND theming RH always had but did classic alt brands like demonia, doc martens, etc

I really think Shadow High is one of the most creative doll line I've ever seen (after or equal to EAH). I just hope they give a ton of love to the concept, because it has a lot of potential. Imagine a 50s themed line with circus inspo like the movie "Nightmare Alley" by Guillermo del Toro. I can't wait.

I really love the drama their giving us. I hope Shadow High has it's own separate series, but still follows Rainbiw High's timeline 'cause we still haven't seen a full episode of Pacific Coast yet. Plus, their theme song slaps!! I also love that they're a playline and not a collector's doll since grayscaled dolls as usually expensive.
Owning two successful doll lines "competing" with each other is going to make sales skyrocket, especially with kids who think this rivalry is real life! Amazing and clever and great idea.
As much as I love these dolls, I'm disappointed that they're not repping alt fashion at all. I was really looking forward to seeing some quality dolls that reflect the alt community, but these are basically rainbow high dolls in b&w. Which is fine, but there's more to alt fashion than wearing black and a choker. There are a ton of different styles in alt fashion, and I'd have loved to see the dolls represent that instead of the wearing the same mainstream brands just in greyscale.

I completely agree. But I'm not surprised, tbh. I figured they'd do this since it's still part of the RH universe. It still sucks though they couldn't make them like Gothic or in Victorian gothic kind of style. It would've been way better, imo. 😕

Omg I thought I was thr only one disappointed..I was gonna get the entire line but now seeing them I'm only getting Grayson, thr boy and the one with the bow heair..they really missed the mark..they could have used edgier designers like Chrome Hearts, Vivienne Westood, Betsey Johnson and even Moschino..
I mentioned this on My World's review. I'm dissapointed that there is no alt/goth fashion elements whatsoever in the new dolls. I was excited to see what they would come up with, and they all look great, but I still wish they represented some of my own fashion favorites.

This line seems SO COOL. The concept of Rainbow High having a Shadow High and Pacific Coast Schools were awesome. The fact both of them being arts schools is kinda cool. AND THEM ALL BEING BLACK AND WHITE IS AWESOME.
ngl, I love the quality of these dolls and absolutely adore the tidbits of world building they're giving us, but they are nowhere near alt lmao. I'm not trying to be gatekeepy but there's no way you could call greyscale supreme and gucci 'punk'. I still like the line and the aesthetic, I just wish they'd do a little more than just mainstream fashion, it's like calling metallica or queen 'underground'

I was so confused when I saw the name Shadow High. Mostly because Ever After High had a book where Monster highs Draculaura and Frankie goes to their dimension, and the title is Shadow High. Wiki: The Legend of Shadow High is the fifth book of the Ever After High book series, written by Shannon Hale and her husband Dean Hale. It was released on October 17, 2017. So I got really confused :P but they look so good!

I haven't been the biggest fan of Rainbow High, the faces always went way too uncanny valley for me, but the less human-like more, stylistic skin tones of the gray-scale dolls attracts me a lot more to them!
Might even get myself a Natasha when she comes out.
I've never been able to like Rainbow High dolls, I just couldn't figure out why, then I loved Shadow High's designs- I think you've just pinpointed why for me too. Thanks for pointing it out, because it's been bugging me for a while! (I'll be keeping an eye out for Natasha too, she's also my favourite of the lot- must be a running theme lol)
I missed actual salt in the franchise and I'm glad Shadow High seems to do it. It gives some nostalgic feelings of #Royal and #Rebel ❤️

I really like them, I’m copping Luna for sure (I’m weak for those space buns). But I do agree with other commenters that I would have liked to see some genuine alt fashion, instead of mainstream fashion but black and white. Still, they have a really neat concept and they’re def going to stand out on a shelf next to all the other dolls.
Although I love the new silhouettes, like Shanelle's flamenco-esque dress and puff sleeves, a lot of the fashions are still inspired by mainstream brands. I would looooove to see a cottagecore doll or fashions from around the world, like saris and yukatas for example (kinda like how Lily Cheng did a spin on the qipao)

MGA's advertising for these doll lines are just ugh, GENIUS. The fact that the story of those "highs" feed on drama so MGA adapts to drama and awesomely uses it for ads U G H. I seriously wish I had money to buy these dolls, but alas, I can only contribute by not skipping some ads on their RH animated series

@@nileysnursery4408 I am a veteran of Monster High since its inception and I love the brand and its characters like they have no idea. But let's be honest, when Mattel started about they "collector" dolls they are almost about the same quality as these playline dolls, I would even exaggerate that Shadow High is ahead.
Don't get me wrong, I think the Monster High "Haunt Conture" designs are beautiful but I think that Mattel is being very abusive in terms of price and quality... Shadow High dolls are playline and I think they will be worth more than spending almost $80 or $90 dollars. I am glad that MGA they are in this plan because children can also buy it and maybe at a slightly more affordable price and it's not a limited edition like the skies (don't look at me wrong, I'm not from the United States).
Shadow High is really incredible but something I don't agree with is that there is no gothic, punk, metal style... I was expecting something more risky because this "competition" opposed to Rainbow High is supposed to be more rebellious and daring but hey, they are just the first dolls, I hope they improve that as soon. I'm really excited about what they're going to do with the brand. And if Mattel really doesn't take a RISK even with Barbie as well... then they'll still be wrong...
@@nileysnursery4408 Seriously. Monster High is my favorite playline series, and even I can admit that the quality & value of those dolls is nowhere near Rainbow High's. Monster High may have ruled the playline fashion doll world a decade ago, but they've got some serious competition now and they're not living up to the name they made for themselves back then.
I'm so glad someone's finally saying it. These 2 doll lines are meant for slightly different audiences. I've always found the Rainbow High dolls a bit clownish because of the colors. These have a more ethereal/ghostly vibe to them and I love it. Not every doll has to be super colorful.
I'm excited about this new line of dolls. Sometimes I feel the fashion industry forgets or ignore darker/emo/goth/alternative ways of style. If they did, we see more and better stores, other than, Hot Topic.
Just got Heather in Target today! i had no idea the line existed, but she sits next to my bed and is by FAR the most detailed doll ever. Giving HUGE old school monster high meets ever after high vibes (freaking love it).

at the start of the video I was kinda scared this would be a kind of, trying to butt in during monster high's reboot, trying to cash in on that hype, but man am I glad thats not the case. I think it's a very bold move to go Completely grey scale. monster high is definitely edgier but also still has alot of colour and softer aesthetics. I'm already really impressed with this first doll and the amount of detail in rainbow (and now presumably also shadow) high's dolls always astounds me in general. like, theres actual strings in the lace up of her jacket, the patches seem 3D etc. I'm really curious how they are going to work with making the shadow high characters stand out among themselves. maybe they'll have characters that only have colour in small acesories or something? in any case, as someone who loves alt culture (fashion included) I really hope they also take the culture and subcultures in mind. I'd love to see a punk inspired doll that got into fashion bcus they home made all their outfits from 2nd hand clothes. sewing their patches with dental floss lollll. also, the fact that someone tried to (probably) get you in trouble by impersonating you and decided that LINKEDIN was the best choice... I--... just point and laugh yall, point and laugh.

I really resonate with your comment! I had a similar idea hoping that shadow high features 70’s punk elements. I think this first wave only scratches the surface and it’d be amazing if they started exploring storytelling options like sustainability in characters who thrift or make their own clothes using unconventional materials.

Based on my one doll i bought(40€ for one, 63€ for Junior High and Winter Break), theyre 50/50. I had to stitch up sock doll came with(Emi Vanda's change shoes come with 2 crescent patterned socks) when I tried to put it on the doll. Hair did excessively fall out when I first brushed the doll, til now she's still losing some hair occasionally while brushing, but I'm trying to be careful. Otherwise it's quite good. Never had such doll before. You might also google and look at other people's reviews before buying one.
U must always watch reviews buying anything..

EDIT: I just noticed that the leaked picture is of the exact doll Melissa from "My World" reviewed in her video? I compared the picture to the doll in her video when it was still in the box. The creases in the dress, the hair, the position of the feathers is all identical. Its literally a picture of her doll.

I made my own Shadow High back in 2009 with the main character being named Luna, but it wasn't a fashion school[thankfully]. I'm honestly not a fashion person but my halfling loves them so 🤷🏾.
I hope they throw in more colors in. I would DIE for a scene/emo, goth Lolita, and cyber goth doll!!

My ranking:
1. Nicole Steel - I have a bias for the dolls with curly hair, its just so bouncy and pretty. I also love her face.
2. Natasha Zima - She reminds me of old Hollywood, Marie Antoinette, and ghosts and oddly that works really well. I love the shading on her face, esp her lips. And I always love a big fur coat.
3. Shanelle Onyx - I'm a huge fan of the white in her hair, and the high pony (I have a character that looks similar to her so that's probably bias lol). She has a pop star goth aesthetic that I'm loving.
4. Heather Grayson - She's cool! I really like the snake motif she has, and the hair accessories are super cool. She's only lower because she's definitely very e-girl to me, which isn't bad, but not a personal favorite aesthetic. Cool, but not as appealing to me in particular.
5. Ash Silverstone - I like his face much much better than River (who's eyes are off putting to me), but he doesn't stand out to me for any reason. I definitely think they're improving on their boy dolls, but I still probably wouldn't buy him. I do really really like the 2d art of him though.
6. Luna Madison - I'm really interested to see her relationship with Sunny, I like her 2d art, and I like that she looks tall (she probably isn't but she looks that way in the photo), but I have never been a fan of Sunny's hairstyle, especially the bangs. Also I'm sure their hair is so similar in order to show their resemblance, but since Sunny's hair is meant to reference sailor moon (since she loves animation and cartoons), why would it make sense for Luna to have that as well? It may be because her name is Luna (contrast to sunny's name, but it is also the name of the cat in sailor moon). That's not really much of a problem, just a thought. But yea, last place solely because of the hair.

I think it's a BRILLIANT marketing scheme on MGAs part to do these staged leaks which may be accidental, but who cares! The effect is what matter's and the dolls meet the high expectations, at least for me they do.

All ik is Shanelle is definitely my number one. I'm just not too sure if Heather or Nicole is my #2 because I don't see much detail on Nicole yet, but she looks cute, and so does Heather in both of her outfits (even tho I'm not really a snakeskin fan or glitter) . Luna has to be #3 or #4 (due to me still not knowing about the other 2 just yet), and I hardly seen both of her outfits. Natasha #5, cuz I think her outfits look really good on her even though I only really saw her first outfit as well. Lastly, Ash in #6 because I never really had masculine/guy/boy dolls.

I wish they had more fishnets, bdsm leather inspired, and other ALT fashion staples. they arent even as alt as MH dolls were even though thats the vibe they seem to be trying to capture, they should take inspo from vivian westwood i think that would rlly make them even better

I NEED this doll. I haven’t got any new doll since years mostly because they don’t seem to sell Monster High dolls in shops here anymore and i was never really interested in any different dolls except for ever after high for a while… but these ones… gosh i’m so sad i didn’t know about them before
This reminds me of the monster high/ever after high crossover book the legend of shadow high. In the book shadow high was a school for narrators who wanted to take control of the characters instead of just narrating them but the school has since been unmade and is now just a jumble of words in the shape of what it used to be
I'm going to comment my opinions noone asked for because I have some and comments help videos get picked up by the algorithm. Personally, I don't see the appeal of grey scale dolls AT ALL. However, it must be said that the marketing was iconic. Definitely going down in history as one of the best toy marketing moments.

I literally LOVE this doll line! I love gothic and alternative fashion and I am so grateful that MGA decided to do this! It also gives me a reason to start collecting Shadow High dolls since I was so behind on Rainbow High dolls this year.
I find this all so very interesting and innovative. I'm very curious to hear the story behind Shadow High. I can't wait to see what they look like in person. This is a great & very informative video. wow, these dolls are so high quality! They are amazing, i wouldve begged my mom to buy them if i was still into playing with dolls. The whole academy thing also good as a thing to play lol, i think i wouldve bought/made my mom buy one from rainbow high and one from shadow high and made them enemy to lovers style romance. i have never been this hyped for a doll line in my life! i adore rainbow high, it's quickly become my favorite doll line of all time, but personally I dress very gothic so from the moment i started collecting them(shortly after series 2 released) i've had the idea for a black themed character with a goth aesthetic. i never would have imagined they'd make a whole spin off line of gothic rh dolls but finding out they actually are made my entire year. like heather's 2nd outfit looks like it could have come from my closet and I literally have a choker identical to hers
