You forgot to tell viewers that you have to wipe off the water from the inkstick after grinding cause the inkstick would absorb it and would cause it to deteriorate easily. But anyhow, this is an informative video.
.thanks for the information. Now, I know how much it costs. My parents will probably yell at me for asking them to buy one of these. (Sorry for bad English)
So I found a set of what seems to be color ink sticks and also a separate black ink stick at a yard sale. The box is rather ornate and it looks pretty old. The colored sticks have a gold dragon on one side an Japanese characters on the other. As for the black stick it has Japanese characters on one side and pandas on the other. Maybe they are Chinese because of the pandas? IDK, but they are nice quality. Can anyone help?
my mom just bought me a calligraphy set and it came with the inkstick and at first i had no idea what it was. this helped me understand why there was a black stick in my set!
Awesome! I'm glad the video helped you. Calligraphies set are good to start so make sure you browse my other videos to learn more. Later you should think of investing in better brushes.
+Ignacio Pena I'm not him, obviously, but if I remember correctly, in one of his videos he said that asian stores or daiso (internet store) are great places to get calligraphy brushes. Hopefully I quote that correctly (my english is quite bad, but hopefully you understood).
Thank you so very much, after trying for several hours and many sites to find exactly what you just taught me in a couple of minutes enough to maintain and sharpen my interest in this artform!
For our coming exhibition I was writing an essay on Ensô. Just for some relaxation I watch inkmaking, so this video strolled by. To me it is an essential part of Shôdo
Thank you so much for this video. I received my Calligraphy set yesterday and I am getting ready for some serious training this weekend. I've seen flashes in other video of the mixing of the ink but not quite as informative as yours. Your videos are always very informative and very inspiring. With much appreciation.
@Mr bob man OMG! Thanks for letting me know. I couldn't have been able to figure it out myself. I guess I should also get rid of my dark hair coz I'm not melanated enough to deserve it! Darn blacks outmelanating us Asians!
Thanks so much for your videos. You gave a lot of information that was very helpful - care of the brush, how to use the inkstick, etc. I got a calligraphy ink set which had an inkstick, stone, and liquid ink. I didn't know what to do! The comments from some of your fans were also helpful.
Thank you. Helpful video. I bought a calligraphy set but wasn't quite sure how to liquify the ink stick. Was about to get a fire going... 😁😅 You saved the day and possibly the building!
Guessing many were thinking to get a thoroughly comprehensive education on a thousand year old art form that they could appreciate if they tried. You did just fine. Keep It Stupid Simple for the head scratcher's in the group.
Is this sort of ink permanent? Id love to utilize this for lining my art work but I use water color and dont want bleeding Also, Can you store leftover ink?
Which bottled ink do you use? I understood simple quality India ink contains shellac, while better ink contains animal glues as a binding agent, which gives the ink more body, syrup like. Does that matter?
I have a few of these ink blocks in various colors. Yellow, green, red... in new to this and I wanted to experiment with ink and watercolour paint. Do I need separate grinding stones for each color? Does the grinding stone soak up the ink? For example can I grind black ink, wash the stone and later grind yellow ink? Or will the yellow ink be tinted from anything that might soak/stain the stone?
I was just wondering if you don't have any wool felt pad or polyester felt pad to lay underneath the rice paper? I only have newspaper or magazines or cardboard. So if not writing Japanese calligraphy with ink brush/ for too long let's say for example around 20mins- 40mins (less than several hours available to practice per day), to practice, despite newspaper not being very good surface will it be okay/ suffice for short term/ temporary use until I can buy felt pad?
***** Good luck to myself trying to convince my parents, who are medieval and computer illiterate, to allow me to buy stuff from the internet using a credit card.
+Girom Christian Calica you can use an unglazed porcelain tray or dish...or a similar unglazed ceramic like unglazed stoneware,...the surface is slightly abrasive and will work to grind your ink stick...on ebay they sell antique porcelain ink "stones" so we can assume the japanese or chinese used ceramics as an alternative to the traditional stone.
I recently bought a beginner's chinese watercolor kit from Hobby Lobby. It had a very small ink stone, as well as an ink stick. Is there any difference between a chinese watercolor ink stick and a japanese sumi-e one? BTW, very helpful video! Since I'm a beginner, I will subscribe to your channel. :)
I was wondering if i ruined my suzeri by not washing it after i used it ?i used all of the ink i made, but some was left in the suzeri. If i made a mistake by not cleaningis there a way to fix and use the stone again ?
I'd like to know if we can wash the stone after using all the ink (because there is a little bit left on it), and also if you can find the stone that people use after the suzuri has lost it's grinding properties. I think it's called 泥砥石 Dorotoishi
Alguien sabe si se puede sustituir la tinta china sumi por algun tipo de aquarella? / Anyone know if there are any type of aquarella that can substitute "sumi"?
I notice many people keep on talking about Rocelangue Method (just search it on google). But Im not sure if it's good. Have you ever tried using this popular learning language program?
Excuse me, Mr. Martinez--I don't understand.... Obviously, you're devoted to sumi-e art and calligraphy. Why then, would you not grind your ink in a thoughtful manner? Your rapid circles of grinding are inappropriate; SLOW circles while being mindful are really the proper method. Second, you didn't hold your ink stick vertically! Come on, that's fundamental. And then every so often, one should turn the stick around--to ensure that the bottom of the ink stick stays exactly perpendicular to the stone. I really don't get it.
As he explained the correct procedure at the beggining, I believe he went with the innapropriate but quicker method for demonstration purposes, since the whole process would take way too long to record. Judging by the way his ink stick looks, he does is correctly normally but for this demo, he did it like that.
Gil Mosko 2:15 I heard him say that preparing ink is a slow process with mental preparation and he said that it is to be at least 15 minutes of time. I’m sure that if he were to do it for real, it would look much different. I think it’s great that there is a community of people who are dedicated to preserving this amazing art.
Isn’t this chinese calligraphy? What’s the difference between Chinese and Japanese calligraphy? If it’s writing kanji isn’t it just chinese ? Is han writing system that’s why it’s kanji right?
Japanese people adopted many things from Chinese culture, for example calligraphy, these special painting tools, and the characters for writing. They also developed their own Japanese writing system, but they mix it with the Chinese symbols. So everything said in this video, can be about Chinese or Japanese, too.
Yeah, omgosh it's so cute! I've never heard a non-native English speaker have that little of an accent. It's sooooo slight I hardly tell at all. The only reason I what's going on is because I speak Spanish too and hear a tiny hint of familiar vowels hiding way down under the surface. ¡Qué ternura! 💕
You forgot to tell viewers that you have to wipe off the water from the inkstick after grinding cause the inkstick would absorb it and would cause it to deteriorate easily.
But anyhow, this is an informative video.
Damian Marcus Migueloz Thanks for the information! I could use this knowledge for when I do get a Chinese calligraphy set! Thanks!

"the ink stone is basically just a ink stone" 2013, By Homie in the video... Words of a genius.
Wow
That's some great wisdom
I want that line on a scroll
The Video is old
Make the ink until it is ink- another quote by Homie
The snozberries taste like snozberries.
It's also worth mentioning that a $1.75 ink stick will make $200 worth of liquid ink.
John Milton where to buy ink stick..?
Wow. So it saves money and since I enjoy it, it isn't't even a chore:)
Yeah, a good ink stick will last a ridiculously long time and will make so much ink.
.thanks for the information. Now, I know how much it costs. My parents will probably yell at me for asking them to buy one of these. (Sorry for bad English)

Gohitsu Shodo Studio sure! XD do you guys sell them or just do totorials?
I don't sell materials at the moment.
Gohitsu Shodo Studio that's ok. my local art store now has a little section for all of that! :)
+Ignacio Pena I'm not him, obviously, but if I remember correctly, in one of his videos he said that asian stores or daiso (internet store) are great places to get calligraphy brushes. Hopefully I quote that correctly (my english is quite bad, but hopefully you understood).
3.44 guys. thats when the action starts

8 years late, but thank you, hero!
I remember doing this my art class. My art teachers showed us how to draw bamboo using these. Really loved it
Thank you so very much, after trying for several hours and many sites to find exactly what you just taught me in a couple of minutes enough to maintain and sharpen my interest in this artform!

I just purchased the same ink stick grinder today. I’m a cartoonist and I’m curious to make my own Ink. This video helped me a lot thank you 😊
You're welcome and thanks for watching. Stay tuned for more videos coming soon.
Thank you so much for this! My grandma recently gave me a Chinese brush painting set and I had no idea what to do with it

I've seen flashes in other video of the mixing of the ink but not quite as informative as yours. Your videos are always very informative and very inspiring. With much appreciation.
Thanks a lot! I usually buy liquid sumi ink as a manga supply. I never knew you could grind it to make some though. Thank you :D
I know this is a 7 year-old comment I'm replying to but how was it with dip pens. Was it good? And how did you made it waterproof?
@Mr bob man OMG! Thanks for letting me know. I couldn't have been able to figure it out myself. I guess I should also get rid of my dark hair coz I'm not melanated enough to deserve it! Darn blacks outmelanating us Asians!
@Mr bob man Oh God, you're not joking...
Thanks! A friend of mine just gave me this beautiful kit that belonged to her mother and I'm so excited to create something with it!
Thanks so much for your videos. You gave a lot of information that was very helpful - care of the brush, how to use the inkstick, etc. I got a calligraphy ink set which had an inkstick, stone, and liquid ink. I didn't know what to do! The comments from some of your fans were also helpful.

It paints quite a picture. In more ways than one.
Guessing many were thinking to get a thoroughly comprehensive education on a thousand year old art form that they could appreciate if they tried. You did just fine. Keep It Stupid Simple for the head scratcher's in the group.
very authentic- preparation helps focus the mind so the heart can write (or sing)!
4:00-5:02 What the first two years of an apprenticeship with Horiyoshi III looks like.
this reminds me of that episode of mushi-shi where the cold mushi comes after u used the ink stick
Is this sort of ink permanent? Id love to utilize this for lining my art work but I use water color and dont want bleeding
Also, Can you store leftover ink?
I have a ink stick and it looks so cool I don’t wana mess it up now!!!
I used to play around with this stuff in my 7th grade art class.
Thank you so much for making this!
Had to pause Mushi-Shi ep 10 and search this up. Never heard of an Ink stone before, so this was interesting to know
懐かしいです。小学生の時の習字の授業を思い出しました。
Thanks, I got a chinese calligraphy set and had no idea how to use it! 😅
I couldn't find anything about using sumi ink and shodo... thank you so much
A tip from Ty--wrap the end of the ink stick that you hold in aluminium foil to prevent it staining your hand.
thank you very much for teaching this information.
Thank you! I bought a whole set for 5 bucks and had no idea how to use this haha
Which bottled ink do you use? I understood simple quality India ink contains shellac, while better ink contains animal glues as a binding agent, which gives the ink more body, syrup like. Does that matter?

FYI if you don’t have an Ink stone a mortar will work in a pinch.
Dōmo arigatō Shodo-san!
Thanks.
How long do most ink stick tend to last? Can one cap of water be enough?
I mean small amount of water in a water bottle cap.
I was just wondering if you don't have any wool felt pad or polyester felt pad to lay underneath the rice paper? I only have newspaper or magazines or cardboard. Great explanation!
Thank you so much for this
Thank you a lot! It's so helpful :D
Hi, what do you put under the paper while writing?i used a newspaper under it but the ink subsides...
How do you know you've grinded the ink stone enough and you have ink now?
Thank You
Do you teach calligraphy and, do you know where I could study Chinese calligraphy in Miami Beach, USA?
where do you get that large container of ink? i have only seen 60ml containers and its annoying to have to buy ink so frequently
Question - can I just use a small bowl instead of an inkstone or is the inkstone mandatory?
mandatory.
*****
Welp, seems an inkstone is nonexistent here in Metro Manila or Pasig.
+Girom Christian Calica online is your best bet.

Can this be used in place of India ink for dip pens? Anyway to make it waterproof?
Really useful video!
I like it...

are the brushes good for water color?
Yeah, and that's pretty much what this is too.
Agghhh he makes it look so easy 😭😭💀
What brand of bottled ink do you use and where can I buy them?
Link to buy online

I do wash my stone after each use. I only use water and rub the ink off with my hands until the water comes out clean.
How long do ink sticks last?
Is this safe for tattoo ink
BEND YOU TIlL YOU BREAK!! Also, gaiging goomba sent me.
does this work for 中国 calligraphy?
No, it will explode...
I guess it would work for Chinese calligraphy...
Can ballpoint pens write in Sanskrit?

Is the ink stink you use oil or pine?
Is it normal for my sumi ink to bleed through my calligraphy paper?
where bought suzuri?
what is the ink stone made out of?
your way of talking is very interesting
Can you tell me what's the name of the song you used?
3:48 is where it begins
Tbh im really against the inkstones being black since you cant see how thick your ink already is
I came here after watching Mushishi's episode about Inkstone
Can I use this for dip pens too?
I think you can, will probably have to paint the ink onto your nib with a brush though but it should still work just the same
cool
Must have ink stick??
Could you do an asmr video of this?
Also good for tattos
how should i clean the ink holder? just run water all over it?
sensou fukoku you place a napkin on the water so the napkin absorbs it and the ink stone doesn't absorb it.
3:44
Jazza's viewers will probably flood this comment section soon
Hiii :)
How the hell did Osu videos bring me here?
Thank you Ashton Kutcher
I had the same thing as you
What is the song used in the intro?
+Awoken Douche Sandstrom - Darude
+Tetsuo D. Mark can you not
Thanks, but it took way too long to get to the point, lol.

日本墨运堂的雨花墨。在中国画家的认知里日本墨只适用于书法用墨,当然日本墨也是为书法特性而制的。日本墨偏洇,在纸上洇墨的效果十分不可控,这是日本书法家所追求的独特效果
theres actually liquid ink around there um
Wow 4 minutes for an intro

Do you know the pros and cons of grinding ink sticks at an angle?
Not really. I don't personally. I like to keep the ink stick straight for an even grind.
you speak very well english
pero se nota que hablas español :v
Yeah, omgosh it's so cute! I've never heard a non-native English speaker have that little of an accent. It's sooooo slight I hardly tell at all. It`s done too roughly. It`s impossible to treat the orient culture for a western.
aw jeez, he didn’t do it perfectly, what a nightmare!

This video was like...three minutes too long
Esteban, wtf man? 😂
