James, I think I speak for many: we love you for your brain, your insight, your humor. Many teachers show off their playing but don't have what you bring to the table. Please keep bringing us content. We all wish you a speedy and complete recovery. We will stay with you whether you are playing on camera or not.
I think Dave Bernas has hit the nail on the head, nothing more to add. Take all the trime you need and think about YOU and don't worry about us. @LOVELY ASSISTANT : pls ensure our dear James James follows the protocol to the letter *I know he will!) NOTE : wouldn't have never guessed you are 53. You are extremely young at heart and this is what makes you special and lovable. I am 58 so yeah, a few bearings and bushings that need to be replaced but it's definitely worth the pain to keep the mechanic in top shape. Stay motivated !!!
Oh my ... as we old farts know ... when you're over 50, wake up in the morning and nothing hurts - you're dead. Get well soon Sir, you're highly appreciated and we look forward to your speedy recovery! Greetings from Houston!
Ooooh... just came across this post. I had "frozen shoulder" starting late summer of 2021, and over the course of the winter, it was gawd-awful - And like you describe, sleep was nearly impossible. Despite Omicron raging, I went to see the Doc, and got a RX for physiotherapy. 7 months later, I had regained better range of motion, with less pain - though it's still not 100%. For anybody reading with this condition, I have two notes: 1) The physiotherapy you'll be doing hurts like hell! And 2) Stick with it and do the work... you will get better by doing so. I'm 66, and I guess I have to accept that I may never get back to 100%, but I am able to golf, play guitar (including my acoustics) again, and last longer before the shoulder call it quits for awhile. I've really enjoyed this YT channel and the instructional videos on this and your other YT channels over many years. They've helped me immensly, especially on some Rolling Stones, open-tunings songs! Even your guitar buying video is sage advice. Keep on rocking!
Get well soon James James. Aspiring guitar players need you. BTW I first learned to play guitar while recovering from a right shoulder stabilization surgery (torn labrum). Wish you a full and speedy recovery.
My wife has this frozen shoulder thing, same age as you, is truly painful, impossible to sleep. Medic told us that even the surgery would not guarantee that the pain goes away forever. I do feel sorry for you, you are one of the BEST guys out here giving so much for so many who loves music.
Hey bro, sorry to hear about the shoulder problems. I suffered with the same issues for years until I met a Dr. that actually paid attention that class and he had me fixed up after 3 weeks of physio ( 3 times a week). He used a technique called Active Release Therapy. Physiotherapist and chiropracters can do it. No surgury is the best part and it's quick. I met a nurse once who had a frozen shoulder and I recommended A.R.T. I saw her about a month after that and she was 100% (she actually ran up and hugged me). I haven't had any issues in the 15 years since it was done and I haven't babied at all, so it lasts. Love the lessons. Get Well Soon
Wow Dude! My wifey & me both had frozen shoulders too! But we learned to use our legs to cope with all of those many psychotically disabled surgeons. 😮
I stumbled on to your site... am I glad I did! I am a huge Rolling Stones fan since they first started as a band. My best buddy was an avid Beatles fan, so as kids we were always trying to talk each other into thinking one band was better than the other. I like the "bad ass" image the Stones portraited and he like those "Prim and Proper Beatles" in suits. I digress... I am enjoying your lessons and commentary. Well done.. keep on rockin!
Certainly wish you a speedy recovery!! I also want to take the opportunity to thank you for giving us your time and energy over the years to help us in our guitar journey’s. It is appreciated more than you know.
I completely feel for you James. I've been struggling with chronic pain for a year and little to no sleep for half that time. But your incredible spirit is going to get you through and really help healing and you can see the amazing community it has built that supports you no matter what. You've got this!
Man, I’m going through the same thing right now. Worst right shoulder injury I’ve had and been healing for the last month and getting terrible sleep. I think I’ll heal without surgery or a cast, but boy has it been tough, and no guitar playing. Received new orders I can only look at so far. Getting old sucks. Stay loose ✌🏻
So very sorry you have to go through this again. Take the time you need to get better so you can get to rockin’ and teaching again. Thanks for all you do for us!
I had SLAP tear & bicep tendon rupture on right shoulder. Surgery and PT. Took 9 months to fully recover. I’m 63. Good luck (& thanks for all the great lessons)!
I'm sorry to hear this. I hope you come through this quickly and decisively man. I really dig your channel and appreciate your instruction and good humor!
I've had one shoulder done (operated on) and the other just got better over time. God Speed on your recovery! I hope it doesnt change the best right hand in the biz!
Sorry to hear of your shoulder problems. I’m a bit older than you and have experienced similar issues. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Thanks for your videos and insights.
Wishing you a speedy recovery. I know what you are going through. Had a complete shoulder replacement and it was about 4 months before I felt a little better.
Time flies by and you'll be better than ever. You're still a young pup at 53 with lots of time to buy more flagship guitars of which I'm jealous and wonder "Does he hydrate all those beautiful acoustic instruments or not?" Thanks for all the time you put in for us and passing it on!
Speedy recovery to your shoulder, James. I always liked when you discussed Zeppelin bootlegs, so maybe that's an idea for a video. Any video involving your lovely assistant is fun to watch too.
Good thing about getting old is we only have to do it once. Hope you get feeling better soon, and thank you yet again for your videos, you've taught me a lot.
Wishing you a speedy recovery! Tennis (and riding a bicycle drunk) made for 4 shoulder surgeries for me. Frozen shoulder typically comes post surgery from not doing the PT. With bad shoulders, you need PT for life! Best solution from my experience is swimming 45 mins, twice a week. - half freestyle & half backstroke! If you can’t strum, maybe after a week you could manage an Ebow! Good luck!
Shoulders are the most complex joint. As a 60 year old swimmer and much more, I've had my share of shoulder issues. It's amazing how much recovery can happen, and how long it can take, but it will...
Thanks for letting us all know JJ, don’t rush anything because we all depend on you directing us and showing us how to play all the great things that you do. Best wishes for a full and strong recovery 🌌💕🌠🕊🙋♂️
Contributions to greater knowledge and musical enjoyment like yours are so valued and the best thing about the internet. Thanks James, i wish you a speedy recovery and return to playing for your enjoyment and ours! Regards from Western Australia.
Love your channel, I've had 3 back surgeries so I know what pain and no sleep is like. Going in for my fourth soon, I have trouble playing my guitar these days because of the back pain. Good luck looking forward to you getting back at it!!
Hang in there partner, give your recovery plenty of time to heal. I really appreciated your channel and lessons, you have provided me with lot's to work on with my guitar playing for this upcoming long, cold Montana Winter. ❄☃🎸
Had my rotator cuff fixed years ago. I'm sure you know PT is your way back. Good luck and don't worry about us, you've put out enough lessons that I'm still working on.
Shoulder surgery is the worst, I had rotator cuff repair and it was so painful. Yes, sleep was not an option for months. Get a Cryo Cuff if you don't have one. It helped a lot. Good luck, you have my sympathies
Hi James, I had the same problem with both shoulders a few years ago. Unless you've had it you have no idea how painful and debilitating it is! Love your videos, they're really helping my playing, so thank you and best wishes to you.
Hey Dude....hope you have a speedy recovery. I too have been there. Rot Cuff / Labrum injury. Did PT and luckily was able to avoid surgery. Sucked not playing guitar either......but yeah sleep sucked so bad. Anyways I do pt weekly on my own now and haven't had issues. Good luck bro
Oh dear - oops !! Sounds painful - Hope you recover real soon ? All the best and good luck 🤞 and hope you’ll be back playing again very soon !!?? Cheers 🥂
Hey James. About frozen shoulder reoccurrence. If a contributing factor such as chronic high blood sugar (diabetes) is still present, frozen shoulder may recur. Fortunately, the recurrence of the problem is not common. I don’t know about your exact situation and the reason (s) why frozen shoulder occurred, so I hope you’ll be alright. Main thing is, it’s curable! 👍
Hope your recovery goes smoothly! I would be interested in some info on how you EQ your amp for your JP tone (especially since I have the same PV classic 50 410). Maybe some gear videos like that would be doable while you're rehabbing. Good luck!
Hope you feel better soon, brother. Biggest bummer is you not being able to play for a while. But always a joy to listen to you chat even if your playing is sidelined for a bit. Yours is my favorite channel here.
My right shoulder has been killing me since February. I got prescribed Naproxen 500mg and it was horrendous on my stomach. I've adopted a plant based diet which I hate. I've not picked up the guitar since January. Driving and as you mentioned sleeping is painful too. I'm 49 and put down to a physical working lifestyle. Literally I feel your pain buddy. 😂
Congrats on the shoulder upgrade! So now you are going to be an even more amazing strummer.....stoked to see the new and improved should in action!! Cheers!
Hey James - take care of yourself and hopes for a speeding recovery. Really enjoy the work that you do. I will miss your lesson but I am looking forward to your non-lessons. I really enjoy when you do videos about your guitars or your lovely assistant quizzes you on your favoutire bands. Looking forward to see what you have planned. Cheers. Get well soon.
I feel your pain. Just had knee replacement three weeks ago. No fun, but great progress every day. So, as you recover; start with “Land Of A Thousand Dances”. One chord. And work your way up yo Louie, Louie. Hope your recovery is quick and not too painful. Looking forward to your positive updates!
Ouch James.! I know what that's like. I used to do heavy lifting & tore up my shoulder real bad.! Torn rotator cuff, torn bicep, couldn't lift my arm past my shoulder it was so painful, sleeping was worse, you are right. !! Had surgery and have no more pain- now it's my right one. Don't want to go thru 6 mos. recovery again.! Glad you are doing better. ! Hang in there. ! You'll be playing guitar in no time.!
Sorry to hear. Hope you heal quickly and completely. My wife had the frozen shoulder and it was a painful ordeal, took a while to get better. Take care.
I'm so sorry to hear this bad news. My shoulder was damaged in an auto accident and I know it's not pleasant. Your attitude seems to be very positive and I wish you a speedy recovery. Don't loose your sense of humor and thanks for all the great lessons.
I feel for you James. At 63, I had my Achilles repaired, bone spurs removed, etc. Surgery in January, Cast for 4 weeks, then walking boot for 8 weeks. No driving etc. Had to move guitars downstairs. Its now nearly October and the swelling is nearly gone. still painful. Doc says 3-4 months before I'm back to normal.

100% James is the best
This is unacceptable. I say we start a GoFundMe campaign and raise money for a bionic arm. James James must be protected at all costs.
Oh my ... as we old farts know ... when you're over 50, wake up in the morning and nothing hurts - you're dead.
Get well soon Sir, you're highly appreciated and we look forward to your speedy recovery!
Greetings from Houston!
and I thought we were going to get a Britney lesson…. Wish you a quick recovery.
Me too
"Nonstop agony" and laughing, love your attitude. Hang in there James.
James, Get Well Soon. A little PT and you’ll be windmilling like Townsend before you know it.
Hope your shoulders are healing well James.
Sorry this has happened😥 I know the feeling of having one, but not two! 😮
So sorry to hear about this, and to hear that you're in pain. Best wishes for a speedy, comfortable, and full recovering, James!

Me too! I fell on my once broken finger just two days ago. Here’s to getting well quick 🍻

Speedy recovery mister!!
Man I feel you I had my right side done and it was so much pain and recovery I never could go back for the left. Swift recovery
Get well, appreciate all your videos and insight. Look forward to when you are back teaching !
