What I want to know was . . . did Biscuit and Loki help with the untangling? or the tangling?? LOL! Love seeing your kitties, thanks for the tips, especially for the link to the untanglers.
Great tips!! I’m in a knitting/crocheting group and one of our members LOVES to untangle yarn. If any of us have a tangled mess, we just bring it to the meeting and she’ll take care of it. It’s so funny to see the delight on her face as she works with it.
My dad was fascinated by my crocheting and he would happily wind balls of yarn for me when I had some to do. He’d wind them into softballs and then bounce them off my little brother ( I was cool with that!). He was also the best unknotter and could watch tv while doing it. Miss him
Im one of those who enjoy the process of untangling yarn, fishingline, jewelry etc. Ive even untangled a wad of fibre covered electric fencing for my son in law😊. To know that there is a group out there of like minded people is refreshing. Thanks for the share.
I thought I was alone in the world. I secretly love untangling yarn, it's calming to me. I buy yarn at second hand stores just so I can untangle it and roll it into a ball.
Thanks for this! I almost felt like a fool for trying to untangle yarn from a failed project. I thought I should probably toss the yarn and buy another skein. You gave me the morale to forage on. 😺
I loved this little video ! I'm an addicted frogger, so often find myself surrounded by the yarn I've just re-captured; and I agree with every point you made. One possible extra thing ? - hold the yarn above the tangle and shake said tangle - GENTLY ! Shaking, I find, can be really useful. Oh, one other ! - when you're lucky enough to have found the other end too (but the tangle is still there in the middle, I mean), try pulling GENTLY at both ends at once. Since tangles are merely loops around loops, and not like actual knots, you can find your tangle spinning slowly in the middle as you pull. I can't say more strongly how valid is the point about patience .. about going quietly, not noisily, you might say. [grin]
LOL When you got to the "Still not convinced/there's still hope" part, I was literally saying, "Just send your tangled yarn to me!" (Or, tangled jewelry chain, mixed up beads that need separating, etc.) I actually do LOVE to untangle, unknot and/or sort stuff.😄
Great video - I'm one of those crazy people that find a good tangle a challenge and enjoy the satisfaction of 'saving' otherwise unloved yarn! My only tip is - don't try to detangle when you're in a hurry or in a bad mood ! 🙂
I think your pretty kitty had the most fun watching you wand up the yarn .... when I wand up yarn I also find the end in the inside which at times it's that easily done, I never thought of using a knitting needle, I don't knit so I do the best I can with my fingers. I do crochet right now I'm making myself an Afghan
Thanks so much 💕- instead of a knitting needle you could use a wooden skewer for kebabs/grilling . You can get a pack for a dollar or two at Walmart 👍🏻🧶
I totally agree it requires patience & it’s like a puzzle. I used to find it so frustrating but I have now realized it is a nice break from other things. Thank you for your tips!!😁💜

After taking a pair of scissors to a mini skein yesterday because I just couldn't work out how to untangle it and my frustration levels were high, I decided there must be a better way, and started searching RUclips. Hands down this is one of the best videos I've ever watched!! Not only did it calmly explain some really helpful and actionable tips (using dpns as bobbins is GENIUS), it also had cats, which made me think I really need cats back in my own home after almost two years without ❤ I also realised that trying to fit yarn untangling into a very busy day is not the best plan. It is good to know that I'm not the only yarn snipper out there, and also that it is something I can recover from 😊 Thank you so much for sharing this.

The bobbin was a game changer for me, I hope you find it the same for you! So glad you are enjoying the hack videos - they are a lot of fun to make 🧶🙌🏻💕
This is wonderful!! I'm laughing at this last bit about the "Knot a Problem" option. My kids and I are in a major de-tangling situation...actually, I'm in it and asking everyone to help!!! This really gave me a boost in morale. Thank you!!!
I recently had 3 skeins in a row that were severely tangled, it was very frustrating! I don't mind yarn barf, but when it was three rows consecutive I did get so frustrated! I actually used most of the techniques you mentioned but I didn't make bobbins, I just made little balls ( which got a bit twisted untangling- so I'll be using bobbins next time). I am one of those people who "likes to untangle yarn (necklaces, Christmas lights), but when I was trying to finish the last few rows of a blanket (with 1000 stitches per row-250 per side) and color changes each row, it made me understand why someone might cut a tangle! Great tips! I'm sure this will help a lot of crafters.💜
Oh boy… I started getting heart palpitations when I read untangling Christmas lights. 🤣 I wonder if there is a community that helps with that? I’d use it ! Thank you for the message… that would be frustrating indeed with your big project . 🧶😖💕

I don't mind untangling. I had a friend that loved it. I did learn a couple of tips so that's awesome! Thanks, I had a big yarn barf today and I just haven't had a chance to fix it yet. Now I know to start at the skein end. Sweet!
I just binge watched many of your videos tonight. I found everyone full of useful information so thank you. This video however was the BIGGEST & MOST USEFUL LOL. Seems every ball of yarn I have touched ends up in a HUGE mess. I don’t know how or why but I have refused to “cut any of other”. I’m so excited to try this later today at its now 3:00AM😵💫🤦🏻♀️. Thanks again, gayle💜💜🧶
These are great tips. I'm actually working on a big ton of yarn right now that is a tangled mess that was donated to me. I will be utilizing some of your tips I didn't even consider, like using a bobbin.
Good morning Roz sometimes I like to read your fans comments and I have to agree with most of them . When I get into a tangled Web which isn't too often , what works for me is the shake loosely technique . I also like to start working on a project by pulling the yarn from the inside . However; if there's a tangle it's usually near the end of the yarn skein Love the tips great as always. Have a great day.
I find untangling yarn very cathardic. My favorite is the dangle and shake lol just watching those loops fall and unravel in to place hahaha The whole process is relaxing. Great video.
Love those tips!!! Untangled a whole skein of yard yesterday! The middle was totally tangled. Wanted to throw it away, but yarn is to expensive to do that! Took me most of the day, but got it done, love your videos!!!🧶🪢🪡🧣🧦
Wow - that’s great! It amazes me how these tangles eventually find their way out. These ones I shared on video all took 30 minutes to an hour each and they were “easy” ones 🤣😅😅😅
I used to have an issue with yarn cakes tangling badly when I got about 2/3 of the way through a center pull yarn cakes. What I discovered was filling up the space with empty cardboard from toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls cut to the same height kept my yarn cakes from turning into a nightmare. This is especially an issue when using size 1 & 2 yarn. It keeps light tension on the inside but allows the yarn to still come out in the same manner it was before. It glides out around the cardboard tubes. The more you crochet the more tubes you add. It works fantastically. ☺️🧶💕

i met a woman in new mexico that seemed like a yarn untangle wisperer. she did not reveal all her techniques, but did share to like never go through loops. ( that is a hard one to follow). do think it is good advice. in the end i think you end up doubeling the undoing usually if you go back and forth. the other one was take a smallish glop of yarn and hold it aboout 4 -5'"above table with fingers like 10" apart. give it a light shake. it really does work and ive used it alot. so fun to learn hacks. also the patience mindset. i had the worst ever skein of scarfie 'forest' ? it was really dark. took me over 2 years. had to do in sunshine area and had like different piles and islands. pretty crazy, but i won. ;)
I love your tips! Lately, every skein of Premier Everyday DK yarn has a huge yarn barf when I try to center pull the skein. At least 1/3 of the skein pulls out in a tangled mess no matter what I do. Ugh!!!
@@PlayHookywithMe YES ! I believe there are many yarns that are simply not meant to be pulled from the centre. For instance, Downunder we have Bendigo Woollen Mills that produce 500g balls at wonderful prices - BUT they cannot be pulled from the centre !! So you have to work with this huge ball rolling about. I hate that.
I really liked your video! I have another way that strangely works. Hold the yarn gently and shake it while gently in any direction. For some reason, many knots fall out and you can proceed. When I get to massive tangles I untangle, shake, untangle, etc. I really like your bobbin method, i usually roll balls and work from each direction, but a bobbin sounds easier to contro.
I like to think im a fairly patient person, but i swear, this latest wool im trying out is testing me. Both hanks i got turned into devil spaghetti as soon as i untied them! The first took me 3 days of almost uninterrupted untangling to get caked and neat, and im just working on the second now. Gonna go cry in a corner and then get back to it. Thanku for the tips 😢 xxx
One of the people of the detanglers group should start another group that we could send our tangled yarn to them to detangle and then keep it as a donation and maybe find other people who want to crochet things for charity or the homeless
A great cheap yarn winder...really not a winder because it doesn't do the work for you. It is old school. My grandpa made mine for my grandma, but he made it modeled after something his grandma had who spun her own yarn. I inherited it after my grandma's death. My grandpa was a cabinet maker and all over wood worker and had some spindles left from a staircase he had done in a house remodel. He cut them down, sanded them, then oiled them for my grandma. They are wonderful!!! You can do the same thing go to your local home improvement store get a spindle that has a smaller smaller around it really doesn't matter because as long as they are not huge the center will shrink so you can't tell. The best part is you can find them for a few dollars and you can make a few out of one spindle. If you want to eat fancy you can use an expensive wood and if you want to get really cheap you can go to their kull pile and usually find one or two for even cheaper. ( If you don't know what a kull pile is ask one of the associates if they have one you can look through. Most home improvement centers do. It's where they put the wood they miss cut or have flaws in it they can't sell) a good thing to know if you ever do wood crafts too. I digress. If you don't have a saw you can cut it yourself with most home improvement centers will do that for you for a few dollars too. They may look at you like you have lost your mind, though😂. I do recommend finishing them with bees wax or another fiber friendly lipid so as not to ruin any fibers you wined. My grandpa was a wood worker and always used linseed I'm not sure that was the best for fibers.🤷🏼♀️
Too bad yarn companies couldn't cake them before selling them. esp the price they sell for now it's the least they could do to make our lives easier instead of having to buy more tools to wind it ect
I thought you were going to say, use a cat, a few times in this video😂 The black one was most curious to see how you untangled his mess so he could play more. My cats are beyond chasing the ball of wool but will bite at it if they have sat on the wool and I keep pulling. Any tips on how to get cat slobber out of the wool? 😮
I have the same winder but in white and purple, i bought it more because the loosely wrapped yarns i had after projects started to annoy me, now I can wind them in tight cakes and they won't tangle with any of the other yarns
I'm organizing all my yarn and found a bunch of tangled yarn hidden at the back of my shelf, I've already untangled most of them and rerolled them but there's one that I found that's wrapped around a ruler and it looks like I've tried to untangle it before and made it worse😭 hopefully I don't resort to scissors
Good tips! What I don’t get is why companies don’t make that inside yarn easy to grab like a tiny paper on it or stocking out. This yarn I purchased lately was what I rank as just about the worst. I couldn’t for the life of me find it, I couldn’t pull out a wad even. It was a huge mess by the time I gave up. I ended up rerolling the whole thing from the outside thread. It was Loops and Threads “petite purl”. It could have been easy
Hi - I added the link to it in the description box below the video. It’s a winder by loops & threads. Just a simple one and yes I use my hands to wind yarn onto it. You can buy a “swift” if you deal with a lot of “hanks” of yarn. But usually I’m just rewinding balls like you saw in the video.
I get sooooo mad that I end up pulling the yarn and break it 😂 it gets to me sometimes that i tell myself, please don’t break it be patient. That I start to tear up because I’m frustrated 😢 😂 it’s serious 😂 I’m such a baby.
If its scrap ,.leftover yarn thats nothing special , It goes in the bin. Id rather do something else, like knitting. I spent what felt.like half the afternoon untangling a skein of yarn because I had to. It was one of a lot of 5 id just hand dyed in skeins. Wish I knew how people managed to dye wool and not get it tangled. So yeah, untangling yarn is a time stealer.and I resent it.

One of the people of the detanglers group should start another group that we could send our tangled yarn to them to detangle and then keep it as a donation and maybe find other people who want to crochet things for charity or the homeless
Hi Roz. My tip is this: I use “hair snap clips” to hold the yarn on the “non-using” end. It stays in place better. 😊 Hugss
Love it, thank you!
Very helpful! Thank you!
Helpful tips...thanks!🤗
Great I use some of these but learned some new tricks
Wonderful 😀💕
So gentle hands are the key apparently! Funnily enough I say this to my toddler 100 times a day, I should’ve taken my own advice
😆💕
Damn!!! This is going to come in handy when I'm under the gun with a project.
So interesting and sounds fantastic. Thank you for sharing ! ❤️
I always ball all my yarn when I get it and I also like to untangle the yarn
I love it thank you for all the tips 🥰❤️🙏
😀🙌🏻💕
Too bad yarn companies couldn't cake them before selling them. esp the price they sell for now it's the least they could do to make our lives easier instead of having to buy more tools to wind it ect
I have a catastrophic, category 5 tangle on my hands rn but im going to really try a zen approach to it and hope i can actually get it out!
Keep me posted! 😀🧶💕
Always shocks me that people get upset untangling yarn, it relaxes me lol
Great tips!!!!
Thank you ! 🧶
Thanks so much! 🥰 I think some of the yarn manufacturers are just evil ☹ And "yarn barf", perfect! 😂
I agree with you on that one 🤣🤣🙌🏻
I thought you were going to say, use a cat, a few times in this video😂 The black one was most curious to see how you untangled his mess so he could play more. My cats are beyond chasing the ball of wool but will bite at it if they have sat on the wool and I keep pulling. Any tips on how to get cat slobber out of the wool? 😮
😺😹❤️
Good tips !
Thank you ! 💕
I have the same winder but in white and purple, i bought it more because the loosely wrapped yarns i had after projects started to annoy me, now I can wind them in tight cakes and they won't tangle with any of the other yarns
Yes, such a simple tool makes such a difference! 🙌🏻
Very cool 😎
Thank you !
yes, do this when my hands hurt from knitting or crocheting, or eyes tired..
Great idea - I love hearing that this relaxes so many of you 🧶💕
This me. Evert project takes me double time because of yarn. Brand new yarn comes in a knot. It's crazy
It really is crazy how quickly this happens 😅🧶
What do you suggest if I don’t have hours/days to sit there with a bobbin?
Send it to the gang I told you about 😉
I agree ! 🧶
How is the yarn winder powered?
By hand - mine is manual . 🤚

Looking to buy a yarn winder, what brand is yours from Michael's? Do you use your hand to wind it up?
Hi - I added the link to it in the description box below the video.
It’s a winder by loops & threads. Just a simple one and yes I use my hands to wind yarn onto it.
You can buy a “swift” if you deal with a lot of “hanks” of yarn. But usually I’m just rewinding balls like you saw in the video.
@@PlayHookywithMe great! thanks so much for the info and reply!
I don't mind untangling yarn. Just ever force anything, because it is rarely in a knot and jus gently pulling it gently apart usually does the trick.
I get sooooo mad that I end up pulling the yarn and break it 😂 it gets to me sometimes that i tell myself, please don’t break it be patient. That I start to tear up because I’m frustrated 😢 😂 it’s serious 😂 I’m such a baby.
I swear , yarn tangles bring out the worst in all of us 😂🙌🏻
@@PlayHookywithMe I thought I was the only one with the feeling of not breaking yarn. ❤️
Why oh why doesn’t the yarn manufacturer just put them in cakes or balls in the first place???
little detanglers are closer than you think (me, its me, im my moms little detangler)
😂😂😂
If its scrap ,.leftover yarn thats nothing special , It goes in the bin.
Id rather do something else, like knitting.
I spent what felt.like half the afternoon untangling a skein of yarn because I had to. It was one of a lot of 5 id just hand dyed in skeins. Wish I knew how people managed to dye wool and not get it tangled. So yeah, untangling yarn is a time stealer.and I resent it.
I don’t blame you 😆💕
Thanks for the tips.
