    Well done. I grow "sugar baby" tup north on top of a buried rhubarb leaf. Also If everyone could taste an allotment cucumber then they would never buy a supermarket one again.

    Seeing this video, I now understand why my watermelon is looking miserable. I have grown melons in the past with great success, this year my melon 'Emir' has cropped well with delicious fruit, but my other two... The watermelon is growing, my 'Snowball' produces flowers but as yet, they wither before opening. Healthy flower at night, twisted and damp by the morning. The watermelons you grew there were amazing, you could tell the crunch and the juiciness from the sound of it being cut open! Well done, Sensei!

    Thank you for this. We always had watermelons when I was a child (living near Chicago), but I didn’t think that they would grow in my new home in Germany. I don’t have the nice raised beds that you do, so I will use a small variety in containers. My sister in Texas sent me seeds, so there’s no financial loss if I fail.

    • @gotropicaluk8362
      @gotropicaluk8362  4 года назад +1

      Melon leaves can tend to go yellow and crispy because either the soil is to wet or it’s to cold. Fleece will help maintain some warmth when temperatures dip briefly. If the new leaves are coming through green, then the plant should push past it, and once the weather warms up they will start to put on growth more rapidly. Chris

      Ruby R Raza not necessarily... what variety are you growing? If the stem is browning and the fruit looks good, yellow underneath (assuming you haven’t turn them) then it is probably ready! Only way to find out is to pick it and cut it open! Chris

    wow well done i think they are perennial in good weather how long will the leaves last u think? untill somethin eats em i suppose since u dont really get frost, which is still amazing to me, just proves my theory of humans only originally living in cold places along the coastlines no frost no worries really aslong as theres food we can live there pretty well with fiya and clothing or fiya clothing oooh

      BetterYouBetterWorld V yeah we do get frost... And so watermelons are a summer time crop. Although they may keep growing in other climates, normally once the fruit ripens the vines will start wilting or the autumn rains will cause some disease, so best to get them out before that. Regards Chris

    Q1: How many watermelons do you get per plant in a year?
    Q2: How much land does each plant need?
    Q3: How much water does every plant need per week?
    Q4: We can buy Watermelon roughly 60 to 70 pence per kilogram in the summer, is growing watermelons at home economical? An average size watermelon (2 kg) needs 500 liters (half a cubic meter) of water

    Hi G T, I did touch very briefly with you on watermelons a while ago. I had some seeds sent to me, and they were the same as yours in the video. I planted 12 seeds, 6 came up, but the stems were very thin, and grew to about 4/5 inches, after transplanting into a large pot, but they all gradually started to flop over, and die. 😤😢😢, I did have them on a heat map to germinate. I have now bought a heat lamp as I was told this will help germination, so I have replanted a further 12 seeds, a week ago, I have up to now got one shoot coming through about 1/2 “, .If you can help can you tell me where to go from here, as I don’t want the same to happen as did the first time. If I did something wrong it would be good to know, but I would like to see some strong shots that will support themselves, is this possible with limited space, and heating.?🤔

      Michael Dominy watermelon seeds are prone to damping off. If the soil is to moist or there’s not enough sunlight you will have problems. Make sure you have plenty of sunlight, this will prevent them from getting to leggy, and don’t over water the seedlings. Hopefully your next lot of seedlings will be better. I’ve only just planted mine. There’s no point starting to early with them, unless you have a grow lamp indoors.👍🏻

      Hi GT, After speaking to you previously, I have restarted to grow watermelon from seed under a heat lamp. I am well pleased with the germination on this occasion, and the heads this time are opening up, but don’t appear to see weak plants, bar for one. They are about 3” high at the moment, but. but am worried about them flopping over, should I transfer to a taller pot and buildup the compost to stop this happening, as it is a bit early to put out.? As I have been a bit more successful this time I would like it to carry on. I have took note of your video about when to plant out, and about the fleece, but could you advise me a little further o n this. Plz. 🤔😊

    • @gotropicaluk8362
      @gotropicaluk8362  4 года назад

      Michael Dominy some plants prefer being planted a little deeper than they grew... ie tomatoes, broccoli, cabbages, they will grow larger roots from doing that. However, don’t do that with cucumbers, melons, squash and peppers. Just make sure they have plenty of light to keep them from getting to “leggy”! What did you want to know about planting out? Chris

    • @michaeldominy2084
      @michaeldominy2084 4 года назад

      GoTropicalUK . Well I wondered if they looked ready to plant out, it could be done a little earlier, and covered in fleece,/ plastic sheet, as it seemed no point in letting them get out of sorts, and end up dying. I grow early ish, to try, and get them like a plant you buy from a garden centre that is almost ready to plant out.
      As for the info on the deeper planting, thank you very much that is very helpful, I will remember that.
      I do have a few watermelon seeds left, now I might have the hang of it, I will plant them a little later, and maybe they will be good to plant mid May.?

    • @gotropicaluk8362
      @gotropicaluk8362  4 года назад

      Michael Dominy the reason for not planting out earlier than mid May is because the soil is still cold. The fleece will keep the plant a stable temperature once planted, and will keep the temperature a bit warmer than being in the open, but the soil below the surface won’t be warm enough yet for melons. It’s is also the reason for not sowing to early... I have a video on my channel about sowing seeds.

      You want the plants to be a decent size when you plant them out. All the best with your melon growing this year!👍🏻

    So the store bought watermelons still have seeds in them in the U.K. ?
    In Australia, if they are bought from a supermarket, they are genetically modified so the vines don't produce watermelons with seeds in them.
    If they are bought from a roadside fruit stand or market however, they contain seeds !!!!

    These are small fruit watermelons comparing to some of the varietes grown in the South of Europe, like in Greece. Also too sweet watermelon is not that good during hot weather. Better for hot weather are watermelons with medium or low sweetness (the "right" amount of sweetness). Try growing Greek varieties in the UK.

    8 pounds! That watermelon is tiny! Like 3 or 4 mouthfuls worth at most. Whereas I managed to grow a 27 pound watermelon in my Glasgow garden. Without a greenhouse. And I started my seeds late, in June. But I am very good gardener. Scottish people grow better fruit & veg than any Englishman.
