Here's a live on mountain review. This thing rips! Chatter? Gone. Turns? Easy edge to edge transition, blissful, carves are smooth as butter. Maybe the most fun I've ever had on a snowboard! Thanks for this rec, Avran! Haven't steered me wrong yet! If anyone is even thinking about trying Amplid out, just do it. You won't and practically can't regret it!
Can’t agree more on this board and your review! I’m pushing 50 and love speed and hard carving. I was able to hit 4-5 full day rides toward the end of last season and i just couldn’t wipe the smile off my face when carving this beast. This board truly rides solid and with full trust at speed. An enjoyable ride from start to finish. Faster…yes! locked in…hell yes! I can’t wait until November to get back on and go. As Avran said, don’t sleep on this board! You won’t regret it!
Year 2 of riding this 161 board (5’10” 210) and all of my comments from last year still hold totally true. 110% happy with my purchase. Can’t wait for my pentaquark to get here for next year to further my Amplid addiction!
just bought this board (version 2020/21). Will mount Union Atlas bindings on. I like the performance oriented Amplid philosophy and many people in Chamonix recommended this brand to me for freeride riding. Can't wait to try it and charge with it in Chamonix in a few weeks time.
I have the 2019 version, and everything you say is correct, i think the 2019 version has a bigger turn radius so you have to manhandle it to go from edge to edge, but that gives it the speed capbilities also, inn deep power its really amazing
Bought a nitro squash for this season already, but every time you mention this board i'm like daaaam it looks so similar. Surprised to not see it listed as a comparable board at the end.
Another straight fuego review Avran!!! So comparison for Japow, trees, hard carving, hard charging, rock drops but still want to just cruise sometimes I'm still stuck sorry - Surfari 161, Excavator 162, Hovercraft 160, or Camel 2 161 @230lbs size 12 which would you pick??? Last question before pulling trigger I promise...
As someone who has/had a collection of Jones boards and Amplid boards - I'd highly suggest a Surfari over the Hovercraft, hands down. The anti-phase is a huge win. The Hovercraft can buck pretty significantly in crappy conditions, whereas the Surfari just eats it up. I gave my Hovercraft away as I couldn't see ever wanting to get on it again after owning a Surfari :). Can't speak for Excavator or Camel.
Why is barely anyone else but you talking about Amplid? Seems like they produce banger decks for nearly everyone. Got a twin ticket for ~200$ and loooove it (as much as a noob can :D)
I get the sense that the Pentaquark probably carves harder, but would you say the Surfari is more fun while still being a well above average corduroy destroyer? And is it softer than the Pentaquark?
Do you think the 157 would be good for messy freeride and pow for a guy 6 ft 1 in, 172 lb? Thank you for everything that you do for us snowboarders of the Internet
Big thanx man. One last question. Do you know one or two alternatives for the cleaver. This binding is to expensive for me at the moment. Maybe I will found a used binding. What do you think about: Cartel, katana, flux xf
Can't decide between 157 and 161 of Amplid Surfari I'm 79kg, 183cm, 10 US. My biggest priority is carving + eurocarving. 15% of pow, 25% of freeride (bumpy, icy, trees, etc). Amplid specs recommend me 157, but my concern is underfoot width for eurocarving and probably I want more running length for stability. What to choose?
im thinking about getting one... im in Vermont and looking for a good rad dad board that cut through all the bs conditions we have here... i wanna go fast without all the chatter. im currently on the new superpig, its ok but i think a Lil wide for all the time use. I just want to zone out to good music and drift around the mountain when im playing hookie from work.
Hi Avran, if you'd had to choose between the Jones Flagship and this one for groomer carving and pow days, which one would you choose and why? Can't decide between these two... Cheers!
How much of a difference does Jones‘ traction tech make (let’s say of a flagship) in icy conditions compared to the Surfari? Got plenty of icy days here in Switzerland, especially now that pretty much all runs in the major ski resorts are being built using artifical snow..
It gives a little more grip under foot because that's right inside the camber section before it meets the rocker. So when it's loaded you basically lose the contact point at the tips and it moves it back to outside the insert packs. If you keep your edges sharp and know how to weight and unweight a board it's the same effect.
Great review as always Avron. Just trying to compare this with the Souly Grail as on paper they are very similar. After watching your reviews of each my takeaway was the Surfari is more locked in on edge and more versatile on edge for different types of carves. Also Surfari is a bit more freeride versatile than the Souly Grail. Would you class the Surfari as more aggressive than the Souly Grail? Is there any other major differences I missed? Cheers
Hey Chris, the Souly Grail has a tighter radius and is slightly softer between the bindings, in comparison to the Surfari. That means you will experience a "carving sensation" (sounds a bit weird) at lower speed already. The Ouly Grail has a bit more tail kick, that makes it a bit more versatile for riders who want to go switch as well. The Surfari does ride switch, but you may want to be a bit more careful because the tail is edgier on the corners. Greets, Peter
Hi Angry, love your videos! Trying to decide between the surfari and pentaquark. It’d be my carving board with double posi angles. The goal is to haul ass and still leave pencil thin lines at all times. I have a gnu hyper 157, nitro alternator 157, and ride algorhythm 154. I had a korua dart 156 I absolutely loved but sold it cuz I like having more tail to push off of. Basically, between the surfari and pentquark, which one fits into my current quiver best?
