Bipolar Disorder can be an extremely crippling condition. It’s often mis-represented by the media as a constant manic state but so often the disease is characterised by a grinding persistent depressive state with infrequent episodes of mania. In this video we analyse an actor portraying the depressive state. We talk about some of the signs of depression (following the SIG-E-CAPS mnemonic) and we look at how they are expressed in the interview.

Not commonly talked about is the excruitating pain that is depression. Any psychiatrist I have met seems to think it is mostly a state of emotion, but that isn't how I would describe it. While I did feel "sad", it was more akin to feeling grief as having lost a child - unspeakably grief-striken - and sick sick sick at the same time. The way a person with cancer describes their malaise. It is a whole body feeling and truly the most horrible experience of my life. I take medication now and haven't felt like that in years, but I will never ever forget. I've had 2 children and would gladly go through labour a thousand times over than experience depression like that again even once.
You are absolutley right @shieh.4743 . I have bipolar 1, and the depression part of it is absolutely not just emoitional. There is all sorts of physical pain and discomfort.
Glad you're doing better.
It's a horrible condition. My family member couldn't sleep, but would stay in bed all day and evening. I would try to be quiet in house, then feel like I couldn't live in my own space. It was a toxic environment and the doctors weren't a great help.
Late to comment, but I would like to add(as someone w/Bipolar I) that there are also mixed episodes where a patient has symptoms of both manic symptoms and depressive symptoms at once. For me, this is irritability, restlessness, racing (depressive)thoughts,SH,suicidal ideation(with the energy to act upon these impulses making them even more dangerous),hopelessness, insomnia, anhedonia, etc. I have mixed episodes way more often than pure mania, although I still(obviously) have mania itself occasionally.
They say episodes with 'mixed features' are more common than pure depressions and pure manias in BD.
I never knew mania was this. This sounds just like my family member. I thought mania meant super active, like grandiose feelings and actions.
Thank you for this as the depression is by far the worst part and as you stated, consumes most of my life.
Glad you're in Australia 👍🇦🇺
Never in my life have I had an experience like this in the hospital.
This lady always impresses me when I see her. She asks amazing questions for someone in the 80's. What a genius.
Love your content but anytime I’m told they’re ‘actors’ I can’t help but lose interest. It hits different and it’s just never the same no matter how ‘good’ they are at acting. For example I’ve seen actors portray drug addicts (I’m in recovery for opiates) and it comes across as disingenuous. I feel like all mental illnesses are much more nuanced and are never exactly the same from one person to another. It’s hard to capture that without it just being apart of you.
Showing a video of a person who is really suffering a mental illness is probably unethical.
@@WouldntULikeToKnow. I shouldn't think so if the person is treated and consents.
Shhhhh…. Only those of us with the illness can tell their acting. To most normies, we act like that a tad.
Love these videos! Very informative.
I like your videos!👍
Informative and helpful. I really appreciate the different chapters format of your videos! Keep up the good work!
Glad you like them!
You're so awesome! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks mate!
Thank you for this video. I just found your chanel yesterday and found it very interesting. Do you have any videos of mass psychosis? It is a theme I'm very interested in.
looking forward to the mental health first aid content. Seems to be a rather neglected realm of care for the people in our lives
Great to hear Ben - should start filming it tomorrow actually!
Hello sir, your videos are really helpful . Can you make an video on conversion disorder.
Your entire body feels like cement and you feel like you have pnemonia from the fatigue in your chest. also the depression can get so bad you feel like you're being followed. depression is normally when i sabotage jobs because i don't have a choice but to stay in bed when its severe. this is why interventions so important
What type of intervention,,?
Thank you Dr. Really great Video.. I would like to become a patron of your channel can you send me a link so I can do so. I have alot of ? For you. I have PTSD and feeling lost right now. Thanks Dr. Love from Anaheim CA.

Thank you so much
It's underneath the video. First sentence.
To the American viewers Paracetamol is Acetaminophen.
This is how I act if I know I'm being recorded lol.
I think anyone who is under a doctor's care for mental illness should not have a do not resuscitate form instated. It just foesnt seem proper to me. :(
I'm SIG-E-CA. The PS does not apply. So I'm good.
I'm sorry. I never locked myself up under house arrest when I did nothing wrong.
Please can you do suicidal next
Hey Bug', I've got a video that talks about suicide but none on a reaction to a suicidal patient... I'll dig into RUclips and see if there's any content that's appropriate to react to!
Dictors were made aware my person wasnt eating. Their response was she must be eating something .... Horrible tesponse. And incorrect.
First like
Too many closed and leading questions, unfortunately. Hopefully, things have moved on since then, with better listening skills and working in a more person-centred way.
Was really interested in the video till u mentioned "she's an actor".
Showing a video of a person who is really suffering a mental illness is probably unethical.
@@WouldntULikeToKnow.I’m bipolar and have had crippling depression but I’m coherent enough to give consent. But I was considered high functioning
Western medicine which I don't believe in
It's an actress?
No thanks.
