Postscript: Have you ever considered interviewing Steve Schmidt? Steve is a political strategist who, at one time, was one the leaders of the Republican Party (GOP). In the 2008 Presidential Campaign, Steve was the Chief Political Strategist for the late John McCain’s failed bid (Sarah Palin wasn’t Steve’s suggestion as Vice President). Then came Trump…
Anyway, he’s a staunch supporter for Ukraine since 2014; a renowned Historian, and an avowed critic of Donald Trump and MAGA.

Using civilians as shields is a very old Russian tactic. Some reported that in WW2 as the Russian army advanced through Eastern Germany Russian tankers strapped captured German women and children to the outside of their tanks to hinder firing on them. Since neither Stalin nor the USSR were ever held accountable for their war crimes we should therefore not be surprised the Russian army is still full of slime.
I would credit Communist insurgents in the Philippines in the 1990s with credit for inventing double and triple taps in which they set off one bomb, then a second one timed to go off 4 or 5 minutes later would impact the rescuers. Sometimes even that was followed by a 3rd bomb a few moments later. Thioks discouraged Rescue workers whose own casualties began to climb. Of course during WW2 both the allies and the axis used aerial bombs that had a mix of instant fuzes and time delay fuzes set to go off 15 minutes or 12 hours (or more) later or anything in between. This too discouraged rescue and required expendable oersons be used for any rebuilding of bombed facilities and infrastructure.

The Budapest Memorandum was a way to entice Ukraine to give up its nuclear weapons while cementing its sovereign status. (It should be noted that Ukraine was already committed to relinquishing its nuclear weapons, together with Belarus and Kazakhstan, as a result of the 1991 START Treaty, which had been agreed between President Reagan and Premier Gorbachev months before the collapse of the Soviet Union, and consequently passed along its obligations to the Soviet successor states.). Russian President Yeltsin recognized Ukraine as its own nation-which contradicts Putin’s modern claims that Ukraine was never independent. If Russia attacked Ukraine, it was understood that the U.S. and the UK would extend security assurances. Even though there is nothing explicit in the agreement that stipulates military intervention, Ukraine wanted the memorandum to articulate that the U.S. and UK would come to Ukraine's defense if an enemy breached the new country’s sovereignty.
According to Steven Pifer, a former US diplomat who participated in the talks, it was understood that if Ukraine “should become a victim of an act of aggression,” the U.S. and the UK would step in. And while that response was not explicitly defined, Pifer notes that: “there is an obligation on the United States that flows from the Budapest Memorandum to provide assistance to Ukraine, and […] that would include lethal military assistance.”
James Timbie, another key U.S. negotiator, noted that “Ukraine’s leaders pushed hard to obtain robust and legally-binding security guarantees from the United States. But the United States, wary of undertaking any new security commitments, was unwilling to provide them. In the end, the negotiators found a politically acceptable compromise by crafting assurances that reiterated pledges to respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity and inviolability of its borders and to refrain from the use or threat of military force.”
Perhaps it is easy to understand why the Budapest Memorandum has been absent from most of the existing analysis on the war in Ukraine. There are three simple explanations why the international community is pretending it doesn’t exist:
    An inconvenient truth
Ignoring the Budapest Memorandum may be a conscious decision. Specifically, it may be an inconvenient truth. If the agreement was constantly referenced, it might, in turn, lead to its acceptance and acknowledgment, which might therefore lead to an expected change of behavior to accommodate the fact. If we acknowledge the commitment made to Ukraine by the U.S. and the UK, they would be expected to change their existing behavior-i.e., respond militarily-which might lead to a nuclear exchange.

this is almost entirely false conclusions and heavily twisted interpretations, to be generous to you, about history. Ukr knew full well that it was risky to give up its Nukes, and that by definition of the context of their own identity, history, etc, no western country could protect it in any practical sense whatsoever, directly. Only indirectly. This is very basic and you are twisting reality into a deeply ignorant way of seeing power. Literally you sound like u've never read a history textbook, never read an account of negotiations of such denuking processes, etc. As for your last line (lol) it belies who u may actually be (?) i suspect, which is a ru alligned troll (?), bcuz if a coalition of the willing does end up participating in this war, there are very low odds that a nuclear exchange would later happen. The fact that the entire Cold War which was quite hot actually, didn't result in a single exchange, is part of how we know that the ppl who control those weapons in Ru know that it's an extremely last resort tool, and if the Ru mil command realizes it's at an overall conventional disadvantage, then it paradoxically won't want to use a single nuke, bcuz it's been warned that if it does, it will lose a massive portion of its conventional mil to a western conventional attack. Essentially per what some experts have been interpreting from the sum total of known facts about the relevant militaries, Ru cannot use any of its nukes, bcuz it's too weak overall, AND shows no signs of suicidality. Just dark gestures as if it's a nihilistic mystico-religous-crazy , criminal state. Partly true, but they are also humans who run things in Ru and they dn't want to die! Ru is brilliant at playing the dn't tempt us crazy psycho's, blah blah. They were dramatic long ago as well with Kruschev. All quite a laugh.

Sad that Roger Waters has become a vatnik of late... I guess Russian propaganda has become rather mainstream? Or perhaps abundance, peace, freedom have become boring for Mr Waters? I doubt he and PF would have enjoyed such lofty careers if they had been born under Russian sovereignty.

    • @piseag458
      @piseag458 12 дней назад +1

I think he's more a victim of the propaganda he's anti war historically very critical of Western military involvements .. its been difficult for me too,to get behind fighting fire with fire,Roger would have to do the same obviously very difficult for him to do its a core belief developed over many years a part of him! and probably does not feel natural to him calling for war.I feel much sympathy for him in this respect, but he needs to see everything from Ukrainian point of view and understand the ruzzian mindset,to do so and not revert back to anti war which becomes anti-west in the hands of russian propaganda takes a daily effort of following news, film and those that care and are knowledgeable about Ukraine, such as this channel is.If only Russia would permit 'a Roger Waters' it would balance things out a bit more.

I agree with you about the misconceived strategy of the US and some Western countries of aiming for two incompatible objectives: a safe and secure Ukraine, and a stable Russia (hopefully a reformed Russia). The reality is that the Kremlin regime will not tolerate a safe and secure Ukraine, and there is no chance of internal democratic reform, even if some form of settlement were negotiated with Ukraine in future. The Putin regime created short term stability in Russia, which is an illusion, because the regime in fact made Russian instability inevitable in the longer term, by centralising power, encouraging criminal corruption and destroying other institutions which help with peaceful transitions of power (free courts, free media, free and fair elections, regional political centres). At some point, Russia will become unstable, regardless of what any other country does. The Putin regime has has hard wired incipient instability into Russian society.

Love the reference to Ummagumma! The music is still good but Waters stance is hard to swallow or comprehend.
The approach of the west has been pusillanimous from the start back in 2014. The shackles need to be taken off for Ukraine, for our own sakes.
Scholz stance has never made any sense, and at this point has been comprehensively debunked. Like others he reminds me of Halifax.
If Muscovia does not lose, we will have far more unpredictable geopolitics; the source of this fear, the advisors pushing it are hard to comprehend, presupposing they haven't been bought or are covert assets?
While I understand the legal arguments and economic fears of the Financial Services sector, most have already been crossed already by freezing the assets in the first place.
    Total isolation, fully agree.
    Thank you Jonathan.

Honestly the thing I don't understand about the NATO strategy of limited escalation - we know by now that the result is slow escalation - the kind of escalation that convinces Russia they can keep pace.
If Ukraine had gotten everything they needed in the first few months of the war, Russia's entire army would have been swatted like a gigantic fly, and Putin or whoever replaced him in this hypothetical scenario (as getting one's army obliterated is not conducive to dictators retaining power) would be keenly aware that "OK, don't piss off NATO, they're really ****ing scary and there's nothing I can actually do about it short of literally ending human civilization. Since if I do that, I'll probably die too...I'll find some other approach."
What we're doing is leading them on, keeping the goal of Russian victory over Ukraine just a little out of reach, in that "maybe I could if I just try harder" range. That's literally a training technique - people who break world records are rarely those who say "I'm going to break a world record" then work their butts off for years, and then finally meet their goal - they're the people who set a more moderate goal and then just keep pushing a little further all the time.

Powerful statements about containment of Russia by driving them out of every civic forum -- social, economic, sport and cultural. If such statements were turned into policies by the West, there would be strong incentives for Russia to stop their aggression and be a responsible member of the family of nations.

British banks have laundered billions of Russian dollars. Thatcherism is a big part of the reason why Britain’s such a mess right now. It’s not precisely because she was a conservative. It’s because she got Britain out of the making shit business almost completely. All the Brits do now is provide services, especially banking services. British banking is a lot like Russian Resource extraction. The country is dangerously reliant on it.

Apparently, Ukraine's Air Force has put SEAD and DEAD missions as a highest priority. Meanwhile, Rostec / KRET continue to spend 420 to 560 Million dollars annually on importing Chinese and other(s) electronic components to supply their 50,000-plus employee force building electronic warfare system(s) source: Euromaidan. EW had degraded the effectiveness of HIMARS and ATACMS source: Business Insider. Russian jammers require countermeasures, and Ukraine pilots are training in the Wild Weasel combat environment - the US sent HARM missiles for a reason.

Even the clueless passive ruSSian serfs had freedom for a short time. But Yeltsin’s crime cartel began to rob the country blind and then petite Putin perfected the subjugation of the vatniks again.

@@shaunfarrell3834 it means Scholz does not necessarily trust them to deliver on the nuclear umbrella promise (note: neither France nor UK promise to anybody in Europe to extend their deterrence capability to them). But the real question is: Why is the US not providing Tomahawks? The ship launched land attack version surely could be fitted to trucks. They retrofitted their Iowa class battleships with armored box launchers in the '80s and therefore know how to do that. I bet if the US provides Tomahawks, Germany will pledge Taurus mere days later.
Germany has at least poured as much monetary and equipment aid into Ukraine as UK and France combined. Maybe the two should just step up their Stormshadow / SCALP deliveries to Ukraine in the meantime, instead of waiting for and lamenting to Germany to give Taurus?
