pex is no doubt a good system one suggestion pull inside a pipe so all connections and supply and return are exposed for easy repair through r and r. the chase could easily replace 50 % of rebar and ensure good crck resistance etc. on the slab and cross hatching rebar to chase s ensures even heat distribution...I'm thinking 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 for chases made of ferrous pipe or even aluminum for easy repair and conductivity of heat. physical protection and easy rand r up and back 1 foot centers or every foot supply one side and return opposite even out side of slab in service chase outside of structure. insulated or even in interior gutters like floor duct but outside external crawls seem best and good place for alternate heat sourcing like rocket heaters or even boilers keeping mess out of structure in case of failures which of course do happen over time....
