we the guardian already have experience in crafting incredibly powerful, and sometimes evil weapons. I could totally see us tracking down the creator of these new weapons of sorrow to find a way to counter the lucent hive. Maybe we create a gun with the same capabilities as thorn using it to snuff out hive guardians light without crushing their ghost. seems plausible with the direction bungie is taking the story.

There are similar lore interactions with Lumina and Boots of the assembler: “pseudophotons and impossible math”. I wonder if those interactions will be explore more as well?
To this day I simply cannot believe they havent managed to do anything in game with shin and the others. He is so iconic and beloved and the story of hand cannons is such an integral part of destiny. My hopes are for beyond The final shape when the new destiny saga will come.
I new this weapon was super similar to Thorn, and to think it was made from remnants of Thorn makes it even better. I love the Lore around these weapons
The Story around the the two Exo Handcannons and the VoG Raid Lore were the first two things that fascinated me in Destiny’s Story, so yes always and forever more of it. I‘m still hoping that one day we will meet Shin and will get a cutscene of an epic duel while we sit next to him and listen to his story.
i think there's a strong possibility the weapons of sorrow might play a big part in a future upcomming season and perhaps have something tied to them during the lightfall but as of right now its to early to tell
With this all in mind: I want to have a weapon of sorrow that's a shotgun. A nasty weapon, an evil, shattered, thing. Something that was meant to do more than eat. Something that is hungry, but likes... Being a bit of a glutton...
For me Osteo is a reliable workhorse weapon. Really good, but has some stiff competition at least in easy content. Chain reaction wave frame, volatile rounds, trinity ghoul, void detonators, swords. Osteo gets the job done for overload, killing packs of adds, and has incredible range and stickiness(duh).
If we ever get more Sorrow exotics in Lightfall(thats if necrotic grips count as one already). New Arms exotic idea for strand. Ritual of sorrow perk: Consume your grenade energy to call forth a pack of thrall to aid you
I wonder if we will get a "Lumina" version of Striga. I think it would be cool to get an entire set of weapons of sorrow, like auto rifles, pulses, fusions even, all with the corrosive effect of thorn, but then think of the idea of purifying each one into some kind of light based weapon of hope!
Shin hearing/seeing Guardians wielding light and dark in balance in service of humanity and the greater good: I sleep. Shin hearing there’s another “Dredgen Yor” using another weapon of sorrow to kill people: readies Golden Gun with murderous intent.👿
Id love to see an exotic quest line for Necrocasm. it was one of my favorite guns in D1 and to have it come back with deep lore would be awesome. That and i love the exploding thrall perk
I think it would be cool to get a full season where we actually finally meet shin and maybe other shadows of yor to somehow reach a deeper understanding and maybe help shin and them “hunt down” or otherwise contain guardians who have strayed too far from the light. Could be interesting as a semi lead up to light fall.
I wonder if weapons is sorrow will get their own foundry… also if poison becomes a subclass I wonder if thorn, osteo, & necrochasm will all get reworked with toxin as it’s elemental damage type similar to stasis.
I noticed a nice little detail while watching this gameplay; unlike when firing with the base mag, the magazine on the model doesn’t deteriorate and decay as you fire while overfilled with the catalyst’s effect, as if you’re feeding the hunger and keeping it healthy. or this is just explained with technicalities and coding, not counting extra rounds as part of the base mag, which makes sense.
Thank you Byf. I've been waiting for this. I'm a huge fan of all the poison elements and hope for a subclass in the future. I started a warlock this season just to get necrotic grip for these weapons.
Love this, very interesting and dark lore. Getting goosebumps from heraing it, would love more videos! Maybe this is the start to the "necrotic" subclass?
I think it's very possible the next weapon of sorrow could be an exotic glaive you would have to craft at the mars relic. I do wonder about this trek down into further depths of corruption, but it's definitely something I think players would be interested in.
I remember when we first saw this gun on the shaping screen during the vidoc and seeing "revisions of sorrow" hyped me and my buddy a bit too much lmao
Bravo, Byf! I read this lore and went 😳"Well, I can't wait to see what Byf brings to this." And, man, talk about satisfying! Hadn't put the Jana-14 thing together from the video on the grips, didn't know about the connection with Weapons of Sorrow lore, and over all that, I was blown away by your reading of the Striga lore. It's so hard to be creative in the face of adversity, and I'm inspired by your tenacity in hitting the ground running after last week. ✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽See you starside, brother!
I would be very interested in more information on who these other people mentioned in the video are! I was a bit lost for a while and I think a new series would really help to clear things up, especially if it could be one of the themes of a new season! Love what you do man, keep it up, you are the lore god.
I love this everything about this weapon and it’s Ilk. The lore and aesthetic are just amazing. I’ll be maining necrotic grips with Osteo And Thorn all season, complete with corrupted echo armor. Great video!
If we look past all the corruption and hive-magics, the development of the weapons of sorrow seems quite natural, I think. Because when new armor is invented, people invent weapons that can pierce that armor. Like arrowheads designed to spread the rings of a chainmail. When there are those who can be revived after death, weapons capable of delivering final death will be developed.
Hey Byfe just wanted say thanks for all the awesome lore videos you produce! This video is the pinnacle example of my favorite style of video you produce. 😁
With the treatment they've been giving to seasonal storytelling, especially cutscenes and dialogue, I would love to have a more intensive in-game arc surrounding weapons of sorrow/Shin. We are learning about their events after or around when they happen, and I'd love for us to be at the center of them in-game.
Came back to this video and this caught my eye. Found in the first sentence of the description: "the infamous weapon of Dredgen Lore." Cracked me up a bit.
I see this showing up in several seasons over the next few years. With Shin and/or Eris getting corrupted by a mix of stasis (or other darkness powers) and weapons of sorrow. They create a group of dark guardians that we have to deal with over time. Fits in with some of the Stranger’s other futures she has already experienced.
It would be interesting to see this storyline revisited in the current environment as it regards darkness and light. The last major story extension was on the very front end of the blurring of lines around dark and light. But now with Guardian's using Stasis actively and the Hive having guardians, this could be very interesting.
I think it would be amazing to see the shadows of yor returning, especially if maybe they are using the possible poison/corruption subclass rumored for destiny.
I keep hearing about all these different groups of guardians in destiny. Ones that have taken on darker purposes. This raises a question that I've had for a long time. Now tha bungie has hive guardians as enemies; will we be getting actual guardians as enemies? The Shadows of Yor, Jana-14, Shayura; all these guardians and the only ones we fight are in the crucible. There will come a time when I think we'll be going toe-to-toe with lightbearers of earth but will we have the strength to kill their ghosts like the hive's?
Regardless of if we do end up fighting other human guardians one day, I would just like to note that Shayura is actually currently in prison/therapy after having a mental breakdown from seeing Hive with the light.
@@erikm8373 And we also know that Aisha is a kind soul :) (I knew it was her, THAT Stasis wielding hunter who stood up against a crowd to save the brother of the murdered Eliksni !!)
Always a twist into another possibility of a season revolving around shin and the drifter again. Something is brewing, maybe drifter still has a chance at that craziest gun fight yet…..
Ive always loved the story of thorn and last word. I was wondering if they would ever continue telling us about the weapons of sorrow. I stopped playing destiny after the taken king and I still watch these lore videos because I find them interesting.
Possibly that in the next season (which I will dub the Season of Sorrow) is going to be us the Guardian hunting down Jana-14 while tramping up with Shin Malphur, after Caital informs Zavala and us about the now rogue Exo's trail of feeding the Osteo Striga, killing both Guardian and Cabal. Finding evidence of finding patterns in her killings or even the use of Psions loyal to Caital to track possible areas until we encounter guardians corrupted by the darkness.
I think the truth of the Osteo Striga may be darker than your interpretation. You said: “Jana-14 is raising the Osteo Striga as a child.” In the lore she was discussing an orphan baby that she found. I believe the Striga being discussed was a flesh and blood child. The lore tab states: “AUDIO DEVICE; RECOVERED ADJACENT TO DISMEMBERED BODY, RIBS EXCISED” Rezyl Azzir adorned his Rose with hive bones transforming it into Thorn. I believe we may be wielding a weapon adorn with the ribs of a child and corrupted by whatever darkness Jana-14 discovered in her murderous studies. This remains one of my favorite weapons. However, the realization of this dark implication definitely irks my every time I equip it.
I don't think it's quite THAT dark, with how she mentions it's always so hungry, the Osteo bit in the name, and the way the catalyst works with poison kills giving more ammunition it feels more implied that the gun literally feeds on the bones of its victims and that the crazy exo lady has been on a bit of a murder spree.
I'd like a re-visit of those stories, because the whole Shin keeping an eye on people creating Thorns in order to use the darkness for good cult thing was new to me
I have a theory that the osteo striga is actually the recluse ( yes that recluse) and that it has claimed soooo many lives and felled a ton of enemies that the gun itself has ascended to a weapon of sorrow ( similar to how the dragonslayer in berserk becomes an astral weapon because it has claimed so much astral blood) which would make sense obviously not only cuz the models are similar but its the same way thorn became a weapon of sorrow ( it would also be a really cool 4th wall break)
I'm interested to see what they'll do with this, but I wouldn't be much upset if it remains a relatively obscure background thing in the lore either. I do wonder if there'll be more, and what they'd be if we do get them; An entire line of "poison" weapons like these might be interesting but without other unique traits to distinguish them from one another it also would make each of them "less exotic" with each addition to the roster. Thorn & Striga are significantly different enough that it isn't a problem currently: HC vs SMG; Soul Devourer damage boost (good for single targets) vs Toxic explosion aoe (crowd control); Both auto-reload but with different triggers. The potential problem is that they've hit two near opposing extremes here, unless it's like a shotgun or something that works entirely differently to those 2 weapon types it'll be hard to not compare future weapons of sorrow to the 2 we already have. Granted if Bad Juju is counted (unconfirmed), that's got no corruption effect but instead "feeds from killing" by getting stronger (damage boost), refilling the magazine (could be seen as "filling it's stomach" if we want to draw comparison), and generating super energy (tithing some of it's kill to the wielder). In that context we have room for other weapons of sorrow to have completely different functions; Nechrochasm creating cursed thrall explosions is absolutely a "hive curse transmitted through the bullets" type deal, but while it had no "poison", it was notably an Arc weapon rather than kinetic like other known weapons of sorrow, which is noteworthy due to arc often being opposed/ contrasted by soulfire in a way that sounds similar to how stasis contrasts solar. Also I've never sympathised harder with Savathun than at 16:43, whiffing a nova bomb is a feeling that transcends conflicts and boundaries.
Ever since they released Necrotic Grips I've been maining all of the weapons of Sorrow with my Voidlock (Striga, Thorn, ToM) it's very niche but I enjoy rending my enemies who are hollow of spirit and meaning.
There's a growing theme of corruption over the guardians, the people Aunor is hunting, Jana-14... This only makes me wonder where did Savathun put the crown of sorrows and if she planned to use it and the fact that she spread her song all over the city before the vex invasion. Someone has to do something with those loose ends and I'm waiting for it
Was my main weapon for first Season of witch queen, and just returned to this in season 2. Such an underated weapon, even more so for Warlocks... And that Siva Ornament for necrotic grips 👀 ohhhh how could I not buy it
I interpreted that the Thorn she had gotten either starved or died and she just reforged it just as we did. Osteo also litterally means in relation to bones. Striga is also used as a name in the lore tab rather than the litteral definition of striga. So it'd be Bones of Striga, maybe?
The way they've been taking this and how they haven't just forgotten about it and it's connected to a few other tabs. Makes me hope and pray that we might get a Shin malfur (killed the spelling) season. It' still connects to Hive and the darkness or think about it it's not out of the realm of possibilities.

Headshots with this gun poison targets. Shots on poisoned targets do not use ammo in the traditional sense. Instead stacks of hunger build on the gun. These empower the last shot multiplicitively. At 7 stacks the final shot deals 5x damage. However stacks above 5 will create a moderately sized aoe that poisons all allies and enemies nearby, and also hurts the wielder. This effect also triggers on a miss above 4 stacks. Though this effect isn't massively dangerous until 6 stacks.
For reference 4 doesn't really do any damage just halts regen.
But but, Jana-14 is waifu material...
I wonder what she looks like
I don’t think this is Shin’s enemy. Shin fought a “hunter”. I think this is a warlock against warlock. I think Aunor is going to be the new Shin.
Shin fought what was previously a Titan.
@@okruma625 yeah a "hunter" as in that the legend says they were a hunter
Nah anour hates the dark to much to be a shin .
People are throwing around the idea of Shayura being the one who puts down Jana-14, both warlocks, both using SMGs. Could work, we’ll just have to see where Bungie takes their storylines.
@@callmelunaVEVO Not likely going to happen, Shayura surrendered to the Vanguard after battling against the Lucent Brood, turns out that after she destroyed a Hive Ghost, her entire perception on things crumbled. Aisha wants to help Shayura get the help she needs now more than ever.
Seeing enemies exploding into poison that makes others poisoned and also explode is just so satisfying. The fact that the exotics are lore linked as well is kind of neat
Yes we need more! Your content is what drives Destiny’s story for me. You alone make Destiny a better game. Keep it up!
"The weapon did not care what it ate, only that it was hungry."
-a friend of mine describing Thorn, and apparently other Weapons of Sorrow
Well said
The hive in a nutshell
Your friend is clearly Warhammer savvy
I remember reading a post on Reddit that pointed out that the way the Books of Sorrow are written are nearly identical to how Xivu Arath communicates to the Wrathborn in order to corrupt them, with some sentences being essentially word for word repeats. I think the youngest of the Osmium dynasty has been more active than we initially believed.
I know this is a mistake, but the fact that in Byf's mind the thorns wielder is DREDGEN LORE is the best thing I've ever discovered
"this time I ensured the scanners were running beforehand" that's not an accident.
we the guardian already have experience in crafting incredibly powerful, and sometimes evil weapons. I could totally see us tracking down the creator of these new weapons of sorrow to find a way to counter the lucent hive. Maybe we create a gun with the same capabilities as thorn using it to snuff out hive guardians light without crushing their ghost. seems plausible with the direction bungie is taking the story.
When we remade thorn in the original quest I believe it was stated that it could be made to sever the light just like the other thorns, but we didn't because obviously we wouldn't be able to take it to the crucible
@@eliaspanayi3465 we gotta think of crucible, it could act like the new staff in psiops. or have a lore tidbit that says it ONLY works on hive guardians.
I don't want to think about the crusible
@@hehitmeinthekneegur1551 god me too
@@eliaspanayi3465 when we originally got the quest, the very first piece of text was how our guardian felt sick from just holding og Thorn, pretty much why we couldn’t use it until it became rose again
Absolutely love Thorn, and the history behind it. This is absolutely phenomenal news for those of us who still follow the path of Yor
There are similar lore interactions with Lumina and Boots of the assembler: “pseudophotons and impossible math”. I wonder if those interactions will be explore more as well?
Maybe Shin will be the one who’ll give us the second darkness subclass or pointed us in the right direction the same way the stranger did
To this day I simply cannot believe they havent managed to do anything in game with shin and the others. He is so iconic and beloved and the story of hand cannons is such an integral part of destiny. My hopes are for beyond The final shape when the new destiny saga will come.
You're the best byf, thank you for improving my day!
Maybe he should improve your grammar while he’s at it
My favorite weapons in general are all exotics, and there's only 4
Thorn, Witherhoard, Le Monarque, and now Osteo Striga...
Ah yes, the quadruple DOT terrors.
Nah cerberous
I've been enjoying izinagis burden recently
My osteo striga was becoming unfun to use, so I got it to level 69 and vaulted it

Ritual of sorrow perk: Consume your grenade energy to call forth a pack of thrall to aid you
Osteo Striga in a nutshell:
Savathûn decided to buy VEIST
Your inspiring with the amount of content you make, hoping to get to your level someday 💪
Shin hearing there’s another “Dredgen Yor” using another weapon of sorrow to kill people: readies Golden Gun with murderous intent.👿
the story element that controlled evil can be used to produce good is such an ancient and common story device and every time i see it i still love it.
Id love to see an exotic quest line for Necrocasm. it was one of my favorite guns in D1 and to have it come back with deep lore would be awesome. That and i love the exploding thrall perk
The whole story line of Shin, weapons of sorrow, shadows of Yor, all of it... I'd love to see more of this story expanded upon.
New byf vid. My day has just climaxed.
“Another ‘accidental’ discharged happened”
This video was absolute gold, in entertainment and education. Thank you Lore Daddy
Love this, very interesting and dark lore. Getting goosebumps from heraing it, would love more videos! Maybe this is the start to the "necrotic" subclass?
The Striga is notably crafted, using our deepsight ability. This weapon was *remembered* by us, from a past, future, or alternate of either one.
Was waiting for this video!
I have been waiting for this video for a minute
Glad to see weapon lore! I hope there’s more to come in the future!
I think it's very possible the next weapon of sorrow could be an exotic glaive you would have to craft at the mars relic. I do wonder about this trek down into further depths of corruption, but it's definitely something I think players would be interested in.
Love listening to your videos while I fill paperwork out at work
Wow. I should have read it before. The Necrotic Grip lore entry reads like an SCP log.
Fun fact! Thorn and osteo both have Similar reload sound effects
Bungie confirmed touch of malice as weapon of sorrow during their vidoc where they talk about osteo
Yesssssss i love all of the lore around this. Cant wait to see this content in game
Literally same lol
I love this weapon. It helped greatly solo the vox obscura mission and move further in legendary campaign.
Did you notice Taeko-3 name? She died in a strike allowing herself to be turned into a crystal.
YES make more on these weapons if you can . They are some of theost intersting things in the game
I think/hope there will be an entire season about the Shadows of Yor.
If there are 7 books of sorrow does that mean there will be 7 weapons of sorrow
Not necessarily, but with the revisions we could begin to see a few more...
Came back to this video and this caught my eye. Found in the first sentence of the description: "the infamous weapon of Dredgen Lore." Cracked me up a bit.
Love these videos. They make gambit bearable
Finally...tyvm byf for the lore...love your Videos
It would be interesting to see this storyline revisited in the current environment as it regards darkness and light.
The last major story extension was on the very front end of the blurring of lines around dark and light. But now with Guardian's using Stasis actively and the Hive having guardians, this could be very interesting.
Just as I was about to take a nap too perfect timing
Would love a cinematic of guardians vs guardians, crucible, dark age, the dark guardians and Aunor, Shayura and the Trials
Love how the TWAB from yesterday confirmed what Byf was saying in this: Thorn and Osteo Striga are the only Weapons of Sorrow
Thank you sir for doing this video this is my favorite new SMG
That (close enough!) was such a mood
thank you for the subtitles my friend
I think it would be amazing to see the shadows of yor returning, especially if maybe they are using the possible poison/corruption subclass rumored for destiny.
Yes! I was waiting for this vid. Love my osteo.
Thank you for the work! Gives us something to think about.
Good lord that makes sense 👀👀
shay appears to have surrendered, according to the new scout lore tab
Regardless of if we do end up fighting other human guardians one day, I would just like to note that Shayura is actually currently in prison/therapy after having a mental breakdown from seeing Hive with the light.
*YOU'RE GOD DAMN RIGHT*
@@erikm8373 And we also know that Aisha is a kind soul :)

"Another accidental discharge" 😈.
The lore tab states: “AUDIO DEVICE; RECOVERED ADJACENT TO DISMEMBERED BODY, RIBS EXCISED”
Rezyl Azzir adorned his Rose with hive bones transforming it into Thorn.
I'd like a re-visit of those stories, because the whole Shin keeping an eye on people creating Thorns in order to use the darkness for good cult thing was new to me
I have a theory that the osteo striga is actually the recluse ( yes that recluse) and that it has claimed soooo many lives and felled a ton of enemies that the gun itself has ascended to a weapon of sorrow ( similar to how the dragonslayer in berserk becomes an astral weapon because it has claimed so much astral blood) which would make sense obviously not only cuz the models are similar but its the same way thorn became a weapon of sorrow ( it would also be a really cool 4th wall break)
its not
@@headmltr6247 i said theory not canon bruv
Shin: “Well shit. Looks like I gotta come out of retirement.”
-9th book of Badassery, 7th verse of awesome
Ever since they released Necrotic Grips I've been maining all of the weapons of Sorrow with my Voidlock (Striga, Thorn, ToM) it's very niche but I enjoy rending my enemies who are hollow of spirit and meaning.
Kinda sad the lore wasn’t Billy Mays screaming “IF YOU LIKED THE THORN AND THORN HANDS, WE HAVE A TREAT FOR YOU…”
There's a growing theme of corruption over the guardians, the people Aunor is hunting, Jana-14...
This gives me the shivers
They imply Striga is a baby. What will it grow into I wonder..
I absolutely love the lore around Thorn.
