In the early 80s when Marks was still playing for Kaizer Chiefs, he’d walk past our street in Meadowlands Zone 8. I’d run after him asking: “Pro, Pro iChips i zo dlala nini?” He’d just walk past, to go check his girlfriend in Zone 9. Fast forward to 2001, I was driving to work in my month old Mitsubishi Pajero 3.2 DiD SWB. I’m in traffic to join M1 by Houghton. When I look to my right it’s Marks Maponyane, looking at this young man and what does he do, he claps his hands for me! In my heart I say what? This is my childhood hero, now appreciating me for my little ‘achievement’? I’ll never forget that experience. I’ll always love this man for two reasons: 1. One of the first NPSL players to regard soccer as a profession and buy a Mercedes Benz along Mike Mangena; and 2. In 1997 he set a goal to become a commentator by 1998, and we remember him going with Bafana Bafana to France. He would be reporting on Metro speaking with Glen Lewis, and sometimes even speak in French. The story about his objective was in a Pace Magazine that I bought back in 1997, for which I kept a copy to this day! Marks ‘Pro’ ‘Go Man Go’ Maponyane, you’ll always be my HERO! ❤❤❤
Corrections Marks. About the goal you scored in the final against AMAZULU in the Mainstay Cup of 1987. It was not Jingle Pereira who passed the ball to Jack Chamangwana. Jingles Perreira had just been released from his duties as an Orlando Pirates coach, following Pirates 2-0 defeat by Bush Bucks in a JPS cup final which levelled that two legged contest . Pirates ended up losing 2-1 in the replay . But he was no longer the coach. Then started the Mainstay cup, the one Chiefs won. Also, It was not Manning rangers that you score 3 goals against in Durban but it was Granaker Rangers which earlier had been known as PG Rangers. Also it was not Sales house champ of champs but it was a Bp top 8. Sales house Champ of champ had already stopped being the sponsor of the champ of champs..
" Go man go" scores goals" I used to say every time he banged one for Chiefs. Later I would hear the same said about Paul Scholes. I still believe mine rhymes better.( Lol). Good show bros.
I never watched Marks as a player, he obviously played before my time. I know Marks the broadcaster, very knowledgeable when it comes to the game. Thank you bra Dave I really enjoyed this episode, looking forward for part 2.
I think this channel deserves a Netflix documentary....it's official!!!!!!!!! Re a leboha hle, o re le lebohele ho Ntate Maponyane aka Go-Man-Go . Pele ya Pele hleeeeee
It shows he has played de game and he mentioned teams such as Bloemfontein Celtic and mentioned gud players. Benjamin Reed, James killer Mokhwanzi, Ernest Motwali and Eden Khathango
I ws listing to one of de interviews of James killer Mokhwanzi mentioned u ntate marks maponyane he played with u @ school and even went to played @ pirates then Bloemfontein Celtic ❤❤
Wow, I am blown away. Go MAN GO, I love how he narrates his gaming days and great players he played with and against, amazingly shared memories of yister year. Even SABC sport back in late 90's shared videos or replays.. great! But the Legend didn't mention Ace Ntsoeleng? Or did I miss his part 😔.
Yo...I'm so excited. So I was 9 or so I 1994 and my mom noticed I was football crazy and she surprised me with a KickOff magazine...and Marks Maponyane was on the cover. ...wearing the white Umbro that Orlando Pirates won the Africa Champions Cup in. I was hooked on football afterwards...so yah I think of Marks and still smile
I wonder if Ntate Maponyane remembers Mzekezeke 90minutes yena le Teenage Dhladla and Doctor Khumalo and their friendly match they played at Bochum in the early 1990s
Beautiful interview, I've listened to this interview in parts but I never felt lost. Ntate Maponyane is a good story teller and T'Dave he's equally good broadcaster
Marks Maponyane came to Bontleng, Gaborone, for a funneral some years back, he was kind enough to hav everyone take photographs with him. So many people wanted photos with him nd he wouldnt refuse. He is a kind, humble nd lovin man🙏 I hav fallen in love with this Podcast, thanx for bein a blessin David!
Mr Marks Maponyane is such an inspiring and eloquent man. I am so happy I sat through this. And King David....your interview skills are so wonderful. Thank you for this!!!
Great interview off course and great personality Marks Maponyane but i dont neccesarily enjoy it when Dave keeps going back and forth and not allowing Marks to flow. Marks will be trying to explain a point and we still wanted to hear more of that point but Dave will interupt and ask something way off. Its always good to start the interviewee from the beginning and then build up to the end but Dave keeps going back and forth until the whole interview gets boring and takes looong to get to the point.
Once met him in Durban ,he was eating at Nandos we ran to him and he stopped eating and greeted us.He was so humble and never complained. We were high school kids by then.
When Go man talks about Shaka Ngcobo....he reminds me of the phrase "Valdez is coming" as then he was flying on the right wing leaving defenders dead. 28 May 2023....we don't have such quality players who can take the ball from centre line with great pace to score it.
Marks Maponyane so humble ; soft talker very smart all well so fluent ... thank you for the good times you gave us in your football times; May you be blessed always
Marks is just so humble hle............I respect him. I remember when I first saw Maps, I said geez this boy seems so humble it shows where he's coming from. And boy I was not wrong cause when we saw MaMaponyane on Boity's reality show, such a decent and calm lady plus I liked how she calls Maps a re Masego. Lovely family
Abednigo "Shaka" Valdez" Ngcobo was marvelous to watch Go man puts it as it is 100% correct...Valdez use to run like he was not in possession of the ball full speed while in control of the ball...he was wearing jersey No 13. Note made on Sunday 30 April 2023. May His Soul RIP (Valdez).
Ha my King!!! Your channel is turning in to a liar😅 Everytime I watch your conversations, I am convinced it's your best one yet!!! So inspiring and educational. I am going to do my best to start NOW to work on my body. This was beautiful❤ Bless you🎉
Go man is correct....Oscar "Jazzman Magaul'egijima" Dlamini was the best defender early 80s but not forget Aaron "Roadblock" Makhathini....May Their Souls RIP..12/1/2024
Go man talks about George "Harare" Makhubela one of the best right backs Pirates had ever produced....he played along Phil "Mr Jones" Setshedi, Steward Lilley, Webster "Neo" Dichaba, Henry "Mthofi" Khumalo (May His Soul RIP), Patson "Kamuzu" Banda, Jeffrey "Tornado" Ntsibande (May His Soul RIP), Amos "Heel Extension" Mkari (May His Soul RIP), Eric "Chippa" Chauke (May His Soul RIP) and many others , I think Andrew "Malume" Phiri....that was around 1983...Note made on Monday 8/4/2024
Ntate Marks speaks very clearly and at his own pace. For someone like me, who's not that much into soccer, it was not difficult to decipher his words. I anticipated intricate football terms... His story is so interesting, and a reason why I now see soccer from an different vantage point. I'm glad there's a segment on him. Glad I watched it.
The cup final that Marks scored a hattrick was the 1987 BP Top 8 cup final between Chiefs and Joburg's Grinaker Rangers which had abo Shane MacGregor, Les Grobler, Charlie Cleeve, Manyathi, Andy Cencig amongst others. Not Manning Rangers. The 1st Leg of the cup final in Durban yes.
I use to doubt Marks [Actually any of Chiefs players of that time] when he was playing for Chiefs because I thought things were being made easier for him by the referees . My opinion changed when he joined Dynamos in 1992 . He was banging goals like no bodies business , It became worse when he played for Pirates.
A beautiful interview once again TaDavo. Imagine TaMarks as a school principal in 2023, there'd be so many educated and disciplined sport stars. Sport is so necessary at school level. Props to his Principal.
If there is ever a player l liked so much and just Thierry Henry l felt bitter when he left our club....Mars Maponyane is the only such player....an intelligent Marks Maponyane....very tough and robust...goal poacher of highest pedigree!!!
He seems like a humble man and fortunately have witnessed him play at Pietersburg Rugby Stadium against Mahwelereng Real Rovers while he was still the captain of Orlando Pirates. Anyway on that day they didn't go through the gate they jumped the fence...I still wonder why.
What a show rea leboga ... what a lovely interview Go man Go ... i have met him in real life such a humble legend... never shy away from greeting and grabbing a conversation ! We salute you
Wow Mr Marks thank you for your visit. I not a soccer fan...the reason I sat and watched the podcast is the goal you scored for pirates with your heal....facing the other way...tjoo tjoo that was a magical moments. Thank you for sharing your magical moments and your wisdom...wow powerful. Again king David...i thank you for your magical work.
Iremember that goal Mr Mweli i think the date was 28 Nov 1987 he scored by what we referred to as "Back header" second half...Archie "Juluka" Radebe missed an open net with Cool Cat Shongwe..29 April 2023
I still have utmost admiration and respect for Bra Marks. When we saw jersey number 7 wr saw Marks. Bra Dave you're correct by saying that before Doctor Khumalo there was Marks. 👌👌👌👌💯
Mafa Marks Pro Go -Man- Go Maponyane that man is a Goat. His humbleness got him to where he is. When Raul Gonzalez could not handle him in the field , he fixed his jaws
Go Man was almost perfect when it came to heading the ball....most of the time he would head it straight to the net from either square ball, corner or free kick...I admired his heading abilities... Note made on 13/11/2023
The man came to steyn 2 stadium in Welkom doing Coaching Clinic with Polokong combined school kids and it was the first time I came close to seeing Him nd the man was humble
Ntate Maponyane has not aged, beautiful interview...he is so well spoken and humble @david mashabela well done on another brilliant interview and episode
Guys I know very little about soccer but I do know that at home we used IWISA brand because they sponsored Kaizer Chiefs and I still use it to this day. David, as always, this goes into the vault of videos I can watch at home with my dad and the rest of the family. Thank you.

"The runs you don’t want to make, are the ones that will make you a better player" stood out to me which I can apply to many things in life.
