Earthsiege 1 IS superior to Mechwarrior 1 and it even came of earlier. The mech bay is way cooler, you have an hud and it is controllable, you can command your team. The story with the AI was great. Also the salvage system makes more sense and is motivating the player so think more about at how to fight.
@@tiefensucht No!!! Dynamics developed Mechwarrior 1 in 1989. They lost the rights to the franchise and decided to develop their own mech game and universe Metaltech.
14:49 yea there was a defense mission that had you choose between your base and the landing craft, if you chose to defend the craft you could go to the moon, but the game automatically fails you if you choose to defend your base. By the time i got to the mission I already had an entire team of orge class hercs with turbo pods and an airrazor with twin plasma cannons and energy booster cell, so i just told my teammates to got to each base and defend it and just flew around obliterating cybrid units that were on route there or the landing craft. For some dumb reason even saving everything we supposedly lost our bases but still could go to the moon.
Barely used a joystick for either game, both Earthsiege games have a auto tracking option which moves the torso automatically when targeting. I then just kinda "jiggled" the arrow keys to line up the shots better
The Razor was built around the advanced functions of the Plasma cannon, going faster would extend the plasma's range and the shots had tracking, you could splash almost anything in the game in a single pas with a pair of plasma shots from an impressive distance.
If you don't know (I haven't checked out the rest of your channel yet, sorry!) there was a soft-of follow-up tactical game to Earthsiege. The amazingly horribly named "MissionForce: CyberStorm". MW2, MW2:GBL, MW2:Mercs, Mech Commander 1+2, Earthsiege 1+2 and Cyberstorm were my go-to mech games in the 90s. Thank you for this video and making me aware of the Collection Chamber! :)
Great video as usual. If you're unaware, there's a cool game jam called Mech Jam 4 kicking off July 6th. I'm participating, but I'm more excited to see some new mech games. Might be worth keeping an eye on.
Great vid! Would love to see a Starsiege one as well. Going back to it as an adult and realizing that the Weathers brothers are voiced by Mark Hamill was a treat
I never played Earthsiege, but I played starsiege a lot. It had an awesome soundtrack, I should find it again. It came with cool lore books too. I think it was my first multiplayer game.
I think Earthsiege 2 was my first mech game. Pretty sure I used a sidewinder precision pro. One of my favourite things to do was throw a dozen or more light/rapid fire lasers on the late game Hercs and obliterate enemies with laser dakka.
I loved the Machine War scene from T2 when I was eight andwanted more. And I loved Battletech and Mechwarrior from a young age so I was estatic when I friendtold me about a game that was set in a Terminator style Machine War with Mechs. I love these games. Now if only GOG would get the rest of the series. (They have one Metaltech strategy game)
I remember when I was a kid, my uncle got me this game instead of Mechwarrior 2, since he couldn't find a copy of Mechwarrior 2 at our local PC store. I honestly wasn't disappointed since the game kept me interested, even though I would rather have had Mechwarrior 2 at the time.
I loved playing ES2. They should make a modern version of ES2 with the same hercs but a different story line but modern graphics and so on. One could also do it in the style of WoT or WoW which would bring in the possibility of tournaments but still the campaign with a plot should not be lost.
Nice review!! How is your ES1 running faster and at a higher framerate? Did you just increase the cycles on DosBox? It seems to be running faster than intended, but seems more fun and smooth to play.
MechWarrior + Terminator, a pretty cool premise. Ain't a fan of the mech designs, which is just Box with legs + some guns duct taped onto them. I prefer BattleTech's Dougram-style armored soldier mechs. But a pretty cool game overall.
Controlling with arrow keys is terrible. With a joystick it's fine. You need the mouse to operate the buttons in the cockpit, but here you could perhaps switch between aiming and operating buttons with a right click or a key.
I don't know why but I downloaded Starsiege last week and I've been pretty impressed with it. Sort of a cross between MechWarrior 2 and Battlezone 98, and absolutely _drenched_ in lore Might have to dig deeper into titles like this one (also Starsiege still seems to have community support, and it's a free download)
Man, the thought of a Japanese mecha game much like Metaltech with its grimdark post-apocalyptic Terminator type storytelling, but with Shoji Kawamori type mecha, shut up and take all my fucking money please!
Heavy Gear II was a really good game, improving from its predecessor, but also very different. More stealth oriented and faster moving. Yeah the Earthsiege games were awesome. Had the Mechwarrior look and feel and really was the better game in most cases. I really liked Starsiege but I liked Mechwarrior 3 more. But in the earlier days Earthsiege a powerhouse.
I remember getting Earthsiege 2 for my birthday way back then, it was the first mech game I ever played and I loved it.
That was a good birthday present
This actually (if remastered or remake) could compete with Mechwarrior. The grim dark apocalyptic setting is intriguing

@@binho2224 Oh damn, I meant Earthsiege 1 is better than Mechwarrior 2, not the very old first one.
@@tiefensucht ahhh now it makes sense 😅
@@tiefensucht It is better but I still love playing MechWarrior 2
I loved ES2. Got it with a game magazine. Watching hostiles just falling apart under your fire was very cool.
Ah the prelude games to Starsiege, one of the best densest and immersive mech games to have come out. I miss that game's MP.
Still remember getting chewed out for failing a mission by a cheesy sci fi commander.

How you got the torso aiming downpat... I have no idea. I need to rig a Joystick to my system to go through it, I really do.

It's interesting how a lot of MechWarrior clone games went on to more closely inspire the aesthetic of Battletech overall in more modern times.

I think the "stiff" models hurt the legacy, just less recognisable
It's more like Mechwarrior + Terra Nova

How's the pig?
New or old one? The new one is currently big as a battleship
@@salokin3087 And the old one?
sad that this died . .
it was the only real competition to mechwarrior
