Instrument Cluster Fix with a 100 Ohms resistor across the stepper motor coil.

Update: I ended up replacing all four of the stepper motors in the cluster after two years and remove my 100 Ohm resistor fix. This seems to be only a short term fix.

I did mine today and it worked...I took the cluster out using the corner vent method...I had 7 burned out bulbs plus the temp needle vibrated..all working now Thanks again!!

Did this today on my 1997 C230. Pretty much he same as the cluster in your video. I t was a challenge getting it out of there. Also a challenge to get the cables of and on. Also a challenge to get the printed covers for the CEL and stuff to stay in place upon reassembly. But, as of now it works! Thank you so much for posting this. I've saved this car from the junkyard twice now this year and my wife is happy.

@@alecusvontritanium If yours is doing the same thing I would say follow the video. It worked for me.
There's an easier way to remove the cluster. You remove the tweeter and air vent on the driver side (all you need is a screw driver) and you can stick your hand in the hole and push the cluster out.
You da fking legend! I had this problem since few years ago. Changed the cluster twice and still same problem, sent to various repair shop, still same problem. Until just now i followed your steps and all my meter goes back working!!!!!!! Thank you so much

how do you know where to add the 10ohm resistor?
do you add it to which ever needle is vibrating? If you could one have a situation where the may need to add more than one resistor?
Or does one only need to add the resistor on the fuel gauge needle’s end?
Update 1-7-2021... The fuel gauge worked for 3 years with this fix then quit again. I ended up replacing the Stepper Motors. Which I found on eBay for under $20 each. If you replace the stepper motors remember to leave the Resistor out of the circuit when installing new stepper motors.

Hi there,nice video by the way and really helpful. I got a question though. In mu case,its the rpm needle that kinda vibrates up and down slightly and not the fuel needle. Does every cluster (rpm,speed,fuel) has their own stepper motor?

Hi mine all stop and sometimes it all works perfectly I don’t know what’s the problem, I’m not able to find a perfect one still.
Check the grounds, I'm not sure mine never came on and off again and work perfect. So I don't know what the problem could be but a bad ground / earth or positive 12v to the gauge.

Man, I'm sorry this was my fix! I'm a 3rd generation Outboard Mechanic! Not a car Tech at all... I would say check your grounds for a ground fault! I had the same Issue with my plug in connectors, ohm out the board or send it off to one of many business on eBay who can fix them...

@@WAH420 i found another dashboard for 50 bucks, I think might be a better solution to buy it than change motors. New resistor won't help even for a while?

@@user-pg6nm3pn5e What I found is the Gauge Cluster is Programed to Your Car Only for Theft Reasons. I tried switching out two others and only my Cluster worked for my Car, that's why I tried to Fix what I had. The Best Fix is Just to Buy Four New Stepper Motors and Install them in the Gauge Cluster you have and go from there.

@@WAH420 yes, I know that, you must find that one which has all 10 numbers on it the same starting with "210". Here in Ukraine I found only 1 or 2 dashboards even considering the fact we have one of the biggest auto dismantling points all over the country because tons of cars were damaged
I have a mercedes w124 e250 1992 and my instrument cluster stopped working and i can hear a buzzing sound when i turn the key to give contact but when i turn on hazard light and turn signals the buzzing stops what could it be?
I think it might me a blown fuse or something in the relay.

A friend of mine a good car electrician (he has always clients cue) wanted to repair it for free but he didn't know how to take out the dashboard.
At the end he couldn't repair it and destroyed half of the structure under the dashboard to take it out. 😭

I'm not sure this was the fix for me. There are some companies on eBay that can fix them or do a google search for gauge cluster repair. "Jan Kotze" said in a post below: Try clean your speed sensor back at the diff, if that is dirty it does not register the signal to the speedo, all meters including temp, rev, fuel will not work if the speedo does not work. That might help

I used a 1/2 watt 100 ohm resistor the color code for mine were Brown, Black, Brown, Gold. I think any 100 ohm resistor would work.

I went to buy the resistor but was asked what wattage. I called a friend who is more advanced and I bought a 120ohm, .25watts. It worked on 2 of the motors but not for the others. Can you identify the wattage of the 100ohm that you used? Thanks.

I have a 1996 c280 and the gauge cluster works one day and then does not another. Kinda goes back and forth. I wonder if this could be the fix. I see the temperature gauge kinda flickers a bit
Would check the two connector pins on the cluster board for broken solder joins.

My problem is different:
After changing the cluster bulbs for LED, a weird thing happened: no lighting when switching the light on at night, completely dark. But the 3 pixelated displays can be seen and all the gauges work. I switched back to the original Osram bulbs still no back lighting...
What do you think? any suggestions will be appreciated!

Not real sure! but I would check your grounds and check the solder joins for the connector pins on the board I had two broken ones on my board I had to resolder.

I ended up replacing mine (110K miles) with one I bought from ebay (70K miles), mine was totally fried. The new one works great but how do you get it to show the proper millage? Isn't the millage stored in the computer? Mine now shows the new cluster (70K) not the proper miles 110k)/
From what I understand your mileage is stored on the original gauge cluster and not the car computer. There are places that can repair the original if you still have it. I ended up replacing two stepper motors so far after this fix because they ended up wearing out.

So Far So Good! as of Jul-3-2017. I also had a few bad solder joins on the cluster board where the main two plugs on the back goes. So check your grounds as well.
I have a 95 C280, how much would this cost to do?
If you have the tools and do it yourself you just need to buy the resistor about .99c
