Lyrics:
Couple in the next room bound to win a prize
They've been going at it all night long
Well, I'm trying to get some sleep
But these motel walls are cheap
Lincoln Duncan is my name, and here's my song
Here's my song

One of the greatest songs of all time. It's like reading a good novel, or watching a good movie, somehow in the space of a few minutes.
In my top 10 and I'm over 60 with prog rock tastes
I first heard this song when my older brother was playing his Paul Simon album about 40 years ago. It totally blew me away.
Totally in concurrence. 🫂

Excellent. I couldn't have come close to your sentiment. Thank paul for the song and you for your kind words
I remember in 1973, my American friend (she was 26 and I was 18) turned on her cassette player for me to listen to this song. I had heard a lot of American songs and loved them all but I didn't always understand them enough. So she sang this song along by short section and said it clearly for me to understand. I love the lyrics although I had never heard any songs in my language mentioned such a topic. I tried to learn to sing it but it was too difficult for me. I hadn't been able to hear the song for a long time until there was the Internet everywhere. It is a really great remembrance of her and the time we were together.
I think she was trying to hit on you.
@@Mistwolfss I am not sure but it was very important for me to understand the language at the time.
Paul Simon never ceases to amaze me. These lyrics are fantastic. Like Im in a room watching him play this masterpiece.
If he had only ever written this one song, it would have justified his life. I have spent time on this road, and my dad’s story goes even deeper than this. Life is full of knuckleballs and curveballs, but if you are standing tall when you meet your maker, you are a winner. I love this song. ✌️🍀❤️
and like a dog I was befriended.Wow!.Great song from my favourite artist.
Paul Simon is so much more talented than anyone else is or was in pop / rock music!
A master songwriter if ever there was one.
Paul Simon is another great American songwriter. Love what he does so much. This song is great. Cheers!
My favorite of Paul’s solo works.
One of my early childhood memories is hearing Duncan on the radio.
RIP Duncan. This one's for you, bro. I just can't even believe it yet. You were one heck of a southern yank & those stories, man, priceless. Thank you for that Christmas gift you gave me for no reason other than we just clicked. I will treasure it for all my days, friend. The good die young, they say. In your case, it's true. Love to you, your brother, Liz , and all our wh fam. #youaremissed😢
Meaningful lyrics, melodic composition. Only someone as talented and far sighted as Paul Simon can bring this song alive.
Maybe, just maybe the greatest singer/songwriter of all time >>>
Paul said it for us all, only so much more beautifully.
I first heard this song while living in a cheap hotel in San Francisco after driving across the country in my early 20s to escape the boredom of my small town life. I found just about every lyric of this relatable.
Sounds fun🤭
I left home at 13 to thumb cross country. It was a Simon and Garfunkel time easy breezy
Times have changed, I wouldn't hitchhike across the street now days 👍
My name is Duncan. I was named after my dad listened to this song
Did you meet a nice preacher girl?
This man is a lyrical genius, brought home in this song by his total immersion in the character of Duncan, where he wrote ' I seen {rather than saw} that girl was the road to my survival'. I bought this album on CD, many years ago but it's all on here now, so I don't even need to get it from the drawer and fire up my hi fi.
😂but it sounds sooooo much better on your stereo .... betcha 😂!!! It's worth all the extras !!!!
@@lindapoplin4473 Yes Linda, it surely does, but to be honest, I've not used my stereo system in ages. One thing I will say though, RUclips's new advert compulsion and aversion to adblock has forced me into use incognito mode with google chrome, even though doing so has limited the suggested videos, ability to leave comments etc. Clearly, Google doesn't have enough billions in its coffers and wants us all to pay up for Premium. There's more chance of me sending a birthday card to my ex wife !
Once in awhile I crank up my Victrola and put my album on.
For me the most genius thing in that line is the church choir video vocal ending he gives to "survival"
I've actually since bought up a jackplug to the back of the computer and connections to my hi fi's amplifier at the other end of the lead. It does sound very good and I can browse RUclips for different genres of music very easily.@@lindapoplin4473
I was lucky enough to attend The Lawrenceville School, NJ from 1973 to 1976. The sweet, semi-mystical nostalgic tone of this wonderful ballad takes me back to the fun & wonder of our teenage years in "The Garden State"! We'd take the bus into Princeton for a change of pace. The alcohol buying age back then was 18. Guess who got appointed to sneak out of campus to buy a 6-pack of Molson Golden Ale?! Yep -- Cav = L'76! I'll never forget my pals Luke Megna; Seth Waugh, Cass Caspary, Matt Hamman, etc. We had 1 helluva good time! Thanks to zillions of great tunes! Peace & Love, Cav = L'ville's "Sprit of '76!" =====================
There is no accurate explanation I can give that conveys the diversity of feelings and imagery that greet my ears with this, tricking my other senses into disbelief. Traveling to a multitude of thoughts that were once individual worlds now fused. This is not just one master work but a collection of masters working in harmony.
What a sublimely written, evocative comment that is not only magnificently musical in its rhythm, but is also reverently harmonious, expertly befitting the GENIUS that IS Paul Simon with his incomparable ability to fully envelope the listener with the majestic splendor of layers upon layers of harmonies that arouses our imagination igniting the ability to transport us to another place & time! 👏😊👏
TYSVM for your lovely comment! 🥰
Have an SPECTACULAR day & please take care!🙏 ✌🤗♥️🌎
A window is glass but still able to feel the outside. Inside someone looks out. Outside someone looks in. Sometimes wind comes through my window at night. In the summer it feels good. In the winter I have to grab another blanket.
@@nothertreeinbox what is that a short story?
This song go brrrr
This album is Paul’s great masterpiece in my opinion
Agreed. This is a fantastic album.
I think I could listen to this all day long!
I saw Paul Simon in Paris with Garfunkel, such a magic night...!
amazing songwriter and I love his voice.
and thanks again for the charango, quena and sampoña.
I was 18 years old when this song came out, I’m 67 years old now….I wish I knew then what I know know….I’m proud of my sins lol
As u should be! W/o those "sins," u wouldn't be the person u r now! "Hindsight's 20/20," but I'm glad I made my choices even if some things didn't turn out the best. If I knew then what I know now, I might've made different choices which would be a terrible loss. Bc of those choices & "sins," I've met the MOST AMAZING, thought-provoking & life-changing people; experienced sublime things I would never have even been exposed to; I've loved, lost, & learned so much about myself & others! So for those things & _MANY_ more, I'm incredibly grateful for my youthful ignorance!😉😊 ✌🤗♥️🌎

You won't be proud 5 minutes after you die..when you face your Creator..you will scared out of your mind!!
Apologies to Oh la la and Ronnie Lane? N'est ce-pas?
One of my most favorite folksong during my high School days until I still admire this of Duncan folksong
I have always loved Paul, he's the total package of music. One of the greatest songwriters for sure. Poetry in music
He also has a cute sense of humor. 😂
I am currently obsessed with this song
ME TOO! IS STRANGE...
I've been searching for this song for many, many years-finally, at long last, I've found it! Beautiful!
I love it when that happens.
I grew up listening to this song!
What I enjoy most from this song is when he sings at the end about the "garden of delight" at night with the preaching girl: "I was playing my guitar (...) thanking the Lord for my fingers"... What did he do with his fingers to be thanking the Lord??? A quite hilarious ambiguos quote that reflects Simon is a fantastic lyricist.
I love Paul Simon and love this brilliant song. It gives me the chills.
It seems like his Father and Mother were not married. And it appears that he came from MAINE in the song
"Fingers". Sexual implication
LA MEJOR, L A ESCUCHÉ POR PRIMERA VEZ EN 1977 Y LA SEGUIRÉ ESCUCHANDO, ME TRAE MUCHOS RECUERDOS
The song has a special place in my heart. The reason I would be going on too long explaining.
@@Linda_Potato after my mother married my stepfather back in 65 or 66 they had bought a house. I moved in with them and my step sister moved in with us. Her and I were very close as we both loved the same music from the '60s. One day we were sitting on the porch playing our transistor radio and a lady came walking by with a stroller with a little kid in it. She heard the song that was playing on our little transistor radio and she says I like that one. Another thing we loved about this woman was she was British and we heard that accent and we were just loving to hear her speak. She had a little boy in the stroller who had a beatle haircut. He was about five. So we're talking to her and we said what is your son's name and she said Duncan. He was so cute. He had this little British voice I'll never forget.
Thank you
“My mama was fisherman’s friend”
Both simple and emotionally profound all at once
Every time I listen I learn something. I think one of the greatest song writers and musicians. Lovely fingerings. Great story teller. Where's the video? Imagine your version.
The andean flute bring me to Macchu Picchu and the Inca empire , so.proud I'm peruvian
Some of the greatest poetry ever put to music. I remember a song I heard over 30 years ago called My Little Town. A line that moved me so was " in my little town I was never nothing just my father's son saving my money dreaming of glory and twitching like the finger on the trigger of a gun" That was so beautifully said . Deeply meaningful. I'm not sure I have every word correct but that was at least the gist of it. Love to hear if again.
I love “and He used to lean upon me as I pledged allegiance to the wall” and “flyin’ my bike past the gates of the factory”. Instant teleport back to childhood!
Corrected lyrics: "in my little town, I was never nothing, I was just my father's son-savin’ my money, dreamin’ of glory, twitchin’ like a finger on the trigger of a gun". This is what the guys sing on the track. The official lyrics may differ. And objects in the mirror are closer than they appear.
Cheers!
i was a kid when this album came out we played it over n over, but i always thought " theyve been going at it all night long" meant they were fighting.
No they were not fighting but making love

Damn, even the Krauts like Paul Simon. It's amazing what losing a war can do to someone's music taste.

Yes I agree what a beautiful song
Heck of a Lyricist...some folks is just better at putting words together than other folks!...woods
Wonderful melody and lyrics. If there is a (Christian) God, He will like this sweet prayer. 👍♥️🤠

i've always loved this song, haven't heard it in a few years at least. i came here because the Holy Ghost filled me for the first time today. i am new to the faith and i couldn't get this song out of my head "i told her i was lost, and she told me all about the pentecost, and seeing that girl was the road to my surviiiiiayiiayiiival.... i know, i know, i know."

Well, I'm tryin' to get some sleep
but these motel walls are cheap:
Lincoln Duncan is my name,
and here's my song, here's my song.
My father was a fisherman,
my mama was a fisherman's friend,
and I was born in the boredom and the chowder.
So when I reached my prime
I left my home in the Maritimes,
headed down the turnpike for New England, sweet New England.
Holes in my confidence,
holes in the knees of my jeans,
I was left without a penny in my pocket ....
Oo-oowee, I was about as destituted as a kid could be
and I wished I wore a ring so I could hock it ...
I'd like to hock it
A young girl in a parkin' lot
was preaching to a crowd,
singing sacred songs
and reading from the Bible.
Well, I told her I was lost
and she told all about the Pentecost,
and I seen that girl as the road to my survival,
my survival.
Just later on
the very same night
when I crept to her tent with a flashlight
and my long years of innocence ended:
Well, she took me to the woods,
sayin' "Here comes something, and it feels so good!",
and just like a dog I was befriended, I was befriended.
Oh, oh, what a night,
oh, what a garden of delight ...
Even now that sweet memory lingers:
I was playing my guitar
lyin' underneath the stars
just thankin' the Lord
for my fingers,
for my fingers...

My mama was a fisherman's friend
And I was born in the boredom and the chowder
So when I reached my prime
I left my home in the Maritimes

I was left without a penny in my pocket
I was about as destituted as a kid could be
And I wished I wore a ring So I could hock it,
I'd like to hock it
A young girl in a parkin' lot was preaching to a crowd
Singing sacred songs And reading from the Bible
Well, I told her I was lost
And she told all about the Pentecost
And I seen that girl as the road to my survival
Just later on the very same night
When I crept to her tent with a flashlight
And my long years of innocence ended
Well, she took me to the woods,
sayin' "Here comes something and it feels so good!",
"기대해도 좋아요 아주 근사할 거예요"
And just like a dog I was befriended
I was befriended
Oh, oh, what a night
Oh, what a garden of delight
Even now that sweet memory lingers
I was playing my guitar lyin' underneath the stars
just thankin' the Lord for my fingers,
for my fingers
