ADULTS are addicted to their phones…they don’t even look at their kids at the table, playground, living room. Kids don’t talk in the halls at school any more…they are all staring at their phones. Nothing is being done about it. Parents throw a fit if the school wants to separate their kid from their phone so they can pay attention to the teacher. What kind of future will this result in, besides tach companies getting richer?

I got every social media app when I was 13 without my parents knowing. I’m 22 now and I finally deleted every social media app and now I just have RUclips. It’s been over a week now and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Social media brainwashed me at such an early age. Political ideas and agendas being spread constantly. It made me weak minded and ruined my attention span. It became better and more addictive over the years. It’s great to just do things now when I’m bored instead of waste time and energy on social media. I believe it causes serious mental health issues for a lot of people.

Why focus on kids? It's dangerous for everyone. If you need affirmation from hundreds of people you don't even know then you're suffering from a mental health issue. Happy and well adjusted people don't care what strangers think of them or seek their approval because they're too busy living their life to worry about how it appears to anyone else.

Teens are not the only ones affected. I am an older adult and I have become so depressed over the things I see, hear and read on social media. All the ugliness in the world and in people is there on full display. When I was younger, the only thing comparable was seeing images of assasinations or the blood and gore of the Vietnam War. Of course that wasn’t any better but it wasn’t a constant, in-your-face barrage of hatred and horror every second of every day. I blame social media for much of the turmoil in our country today. Not only does it spread hatred, but also lies and disinformation that more gullible people can’t distinguish from the truth because our educational system hasn’t given them the tools to do so.

Ya know. If their parents were parenting this probably would not be an issue. The one thing I don’t see the surgeon general saying is anything about the parents responsibility in this. If they just quit letting their kids veg out on the internet it’s done. I understand kids can be sneaky but if you can’t outsmart your own kids you probably should not have them…I wait tables for a living so I constantly see families sit down, put a phone or iPad screen in front of a child and then ignore them the whole time. If I had a family to eat dinner with I would talk to them and engage as opposed to sit on my phone and ignore them. The worst is when you see people on dates and one person is just on their phone and there seems to be no chemistry. Figure it out people. If your not checking out the fly babes on Instagram, watching VladTv, or learning something from a music tutorial then give it a rest.

    • @niriv1994

this is so true, people never want to admit it because they probably fit the narrative, they don't put there kids in any sports or any activities when there young or any groups and they just get fat also. its like the most obvious things it really just the parents fault and people just want to be a victim... that's society we live in now.

That's called child neglect at best when children are indoors on those devices as babysitters instead of giving them parental guidance and attention as well as going outside and doing physical activities to develop their growth. Now you know what created a generation of woke culture and we are paying for it.

The answer to minimizing children from using it is to mandate that social media corporations charge a monthly fee for the service and as part of that disable all data collection and monetization mechanisms for those accounts. Also ban TV-14 for children under the age of 18. Teenagers should not watch TV-14, despite it being for ages 14 and up. We need laws banning TV-14 for kids and teens. It means that it may not be suitable for children under the age of 18. It’s concerning that teenagers are watching TV-14 shows. Kids over 18 can maybe watch TV-14, but NOT kids under the age of 18. 14 is WAY too young to watch a TV-14 show. TV-14 means the show may be unsuitable for children under the age of 14. Streaming services should ban all TV-14 shows for kids and teens accounts.

Theres no reason for that law to exist. social media isnt causing mental health problems. a parent can give their child social media if they want. its not your children.
also, i recently had suicidal depression and it was the worst pain imaginable and was caused entirely by diet. blaming it on social media is making depression seem like a joke rather than a serious problem

Criminy! A lot of judgment here in these comments, but I beg you judgey types to consider that you’re using social media right now. Like, right this minute, in this window you’re reading, on this site, this is social media, and I know that you witness terrible interactions here all the time.
    But you’re all still here.

I personally don't think the minimum age requirement should be 13-14 because that's when you're in that weird middle ground between kid and adult, the hormones make you unstable and you're more impressionable and vulnerable. I remember I was the most messed up between 12-14 years old!
The minimum age should be 16, at least, because that's driving age and you'd think they'd be starting to mature by that point and don't have to worry as much? My opinion though...

There is no minimum age. They should just stop saying that. On every website, there’s a checkbox asking if you’re old enough to sign up or some text stating that you must be a certain age. These companies would add an age verification system if they really cared about that.
