Link, the Hero of the Minish Because Naofumi Hataya and Masafumi Ogata, the original composers of Sonic CD, were probably big fans of funk music and the hip-hop scenes in the US. The usage of sampling and mixing had a big influence on the soundtrack, and the boss theme was like their own love letter to what could be heard on hip-hop radio stations back in the 80s. So yes, Sonic CD's soundtrack was ahead of the curve with its sampling usage and funk influence.

Heard this song on soul train. It was the first song they played. It was the episode with ray Parker jr and sister sledge. That was a great episode. All the songs that were played, which only show the audience dancing were good. The songs that the performers sang were just ok. But everything else was great.

The sample pack they used was called Skip To My Loops, that's where the mini boss voice in sonic 3 came from.
