Will Kennedy is a very much underrated drummer,I'm a drummer and he's in my top 3 remember, right handed playing left handed not easy at all, much respect will
I used to go to sleep to this every single night. The four corners album gave me life. I remember my father one day telling me that he didn’t know I liked jazz. I told him I didn’t know either. Good times.
Wow I can't explain exactly what happened when I first heard this song and watched the video when it first came out back in 1987. All I can remember is I really liked what I was hearing. I was 2 years out of trade school for carpentry. I was into rock an roll. I played the drums. I had jeff beck, Allman Brothers, Return to Forever, John McLaughlin, Pat Matheny Albums. I heard on the radio that the Yellow jackets were going to be at the Keswick theater in Glennside PA. I freaking took the train there from lindenwold NJ. I get to the window an before I could ask the guy said Sold Out. I almost passed the fuck out. He says hold on. Ok. Ah yes I have 2 tickets that canceled. Omg I couldn't believe what just happened. So I buy one ticket. As I got my ticket an older woman, I was 22 back then. Ran up to the window an ask for a ticket, I said he's got one left. Hahaha no I didn't hook up. Would of been nice. Anyway that was my first live show of a band I had no clue only the one song. That night changed forever and now knowing that was a very important point in time. I consider myself very lucky to be able to appreciate some of the finest music from more than just a jazz band, rock band, blues band. And yes I played drums in a few bands. I met some very very good musicians along the way. Crazy thing is it was just a few nights ago I found a jeff lorber video with Jimmy haslip an Sonny Emory on RUclips. The music masters keep it coming and I'm very thankful those who post these great videos. Wow Alrite Already thanks for letting me share. Happy New Years
Wow i didn't know that there was a mtv video clip, 80' really the best period for music business, real art for everyone ! A must! Time signatures, 7/8 , 6/8 and 12/8
VH1 used to have a show on Sunday evenings , from 9PM until Midnight . As a musician, it was refreshing to hear things that were not straight IV, V, I. I’m a drummer with a degree in Jazz Performance and Composition. I have been blessed to have worked with quite a few “greats”. Love my RnR, Prog and other various genres- but it was just killer to watch the jazz community in the limelight. Miss that show .
It's hard to describe to younger people how perfect this song is--the execution, the variety within it, and the times it was written and performed. The whole thing basically shouts peak America.
I was born in 1995 and recently started listening to allan holdsworth. I never realized that before he died, he played on stage with the bassist of this band
I make sure to show my kid allan holdsworth and chad wackerman. His favorite is '5-10'. My favorite is 'you came along'. We still cant tell if its the synthaxw or a kwyboard in the beginning of 5 to 10
severa, severa, severa ( every body will see) en la Jungla una joya (in the forest a jewel) la timba con palo y bombo (a playfull conga with Wood and bass drum) yayego, yayego, yayego ( all ready arrived, arrived, arrived) cuma saye ( dancing with joy) masacote nañan de-e (with rythm and soul) Found this posted in the Yellowjackets forum on an archived post from 2002. Enjoy!
This is truly a brilliant song. Also, I believe this is the first time I have ever seen intelligent conversation about ANYTHING on RUclips. I would like to personally thank you all. How refreshing!
I like how The Yellowjackets and Spyro Gyro end their tracks in the same tempo as they begin them. Listen closely the next time u enjoy them. Its like telling someone a story and refreshing the importance of it at the end.
Russ Ferrante's 7/8 Ostinato over top Will's 6/8 Afro-Cuban Beat over top Haslip's? Swing Bass line with an Implied 12/8 = some Crazy-A** Polyrhythmic Sh*t Kids :)
Four Corners was my introduction to the YellowJackets. Love them so much I collect everything they release. Their dedication to their craft makes music so complex and intricate but totally enjoyable to listen to. Be prepared to go on the most amazing journey!
This has to be one of the most difficult pieces to perform - very unusual rhythm. The bass and the drums sound like they have different timing but it works like magic!
@peter g Well it's a simple mistake considering Ferrante IS playing the keyboard riff in 7. Kennedy is playing 6/4 overall, but I occasionally hear measures of 7+5.
Back in the day, the WTC had concerts in the plaza and the old station CD101.9 would sponsor Jazz Fridays. Yellowjackets played a lunch set that was life-changing. Go see live music!!! You never know when it will be taken away from you.
"Four Corners" is the only jazz composition i have heard that perfectly fused straight-ahead jazz's improvisational brilliance with the irresistible groove and syncopation of smooth-jazz. Every track is perfect. No weaknesses. I defy anyone to name one better since the Yellowjackets released this masterpiece.......
+doozerace FACTS!!!!! I also love the "Politics" and "Greenhouse" albums, but the were not as solid as "Four Corners". This album should've won several Grammys.
@peter g "tortoise and the hare" ! i just cry when i listen to ! man politics is the best album but the 5 five first are monstruous lol ! later ok but its a greaaaat band !
One of my favorite Yellowjackets tunes ever! So uplifting and joyful when the vocals come in and then when the bass, keys and sax join in, it's transcendent, like a heavenly African choir. Quite poignant when I think of some of the misery that people from that continent have endured. During that chorus I can "see" the dancing and feel the joy over a day that I believe will eventually come. If that section had continued for a few more bars somehow, it would be ecstatic!
I just saw a video of one of their interviews and Will said that all of these years he has been having nothing but fun. Can you imagine working at a job for over 30years and still having fun?? It's not a job. Its an adventure. I envy all of their talent.
VH-1 Jazz New Visions on Sunday nights hosted by Ben Sidran. Short lived but perfectly timed for this period... Yellowjackets, Chick Corea Elektric Band, Miles Davis’ Tutu period etc. etc. they all had videos believe it or not.
#JazzFusion #JazzContemporaneo

I saw The Yellowjackets live in 1982 at the Sacramento Convention Center. They opened up for Kenny G. & G - Force. The Yellowjackets were smokin' tight. Sounded better than on record. And Kenny G. opened my eyes ! The man played his butt off ! That concert is in my top 20. Out of 100 give or take. Great times...
Sooo..gotta tell this. I was in college at the Student Union. Back when BET was worth watching and the news preview was playing this in the background...mannn it took me till my late 30s to find out who this was...

I used to go to sleep to this every single night. The four corners album gave me life. I remember my father one day telling me that he didn’t know I liked jazz. I told him I didn’t know either. Good times.
Russell Ferrante + Jimmy Haslip + William Kennedy + Marc Russo = the classic and greatest Yellowjackets lineup of all
AGREED!!!!!!!!!!!🎉
Haslip's decision in the chorus not to come in with the bass until 3:39 was money. Just builds and builds the tension until he resolves it.
YESSS...but the band should’ve added couple more bars on that part ..had my self repeating the entire song just to reach 3:39
that's worth a lot of money!!!!!

such an awesome cut
One of the most beautiful songs of the 80 !!!

It's 6/4, until someone tells me otherwise.

Bravo to Yellowjackets for all of the tracks on their fantastic album, "Four Corners". Especially this one, with its exotic rhythms. :)

Хорошая и приятная подача видео и материала
The video is very cute and so 80's but the music stands the test of time! Love it!
Thanks ❤
It's like, where did this video EVER play back in the day? There was no outlet at all for this kind of music. MTV was too young and dumb.
