    Any ump worth his salt should know that every base, including home plate is in fair territory.

      i had the oppiste happen to me i toss the assistant coach out, the head coach was very much thin ice with me already, he knew when told him to stop to stop. he didn't like the zone which his 12u players were lobbying the ball over batters head/eyes im not calling it a stirke he complain about forced out a third claiming feilder didn't step on bag white cleats white base. i saw it

      so i had a batter hit the ball was in front of home plate no joke didn't call anything than once it was touch i pointed fair.

    The coach approached this the wrong way. He should have asked the umpire where fair territory is, then asked the ump to show him where the girl picked up the ball. Don’t tell, ask.

    as umpire myself 1. take the mask off 2. it was fair ball apoglize and fix it. 3. dont tell him he going to parking lot or dugout pick one or other 4. when you have converstation with coach take the damn mask off. when there play take the damn mask off

      Agreed. Not sure what he saw here but, the first thing I do on any type of contact by the batter is take off my mask. It didn't look like the catcher shielded him either so I'm not sure how he missed this call but, he did....The coach seems frustrated too and I did not like him drawing circles in the dirt. I also never get into a shouting match with a coach on the field regardless of the situation. Amazing again..athrough all this....he never takes off his mask!!!

    Yeah boy, fair ball. Umpire was dead wrong, but the coach should have conducted a quiet conversation with the umpire, with their backs to the crowd. Coach was correct in his ruling, but drawing circles in the dirt and his public “you’re 1 for 4 today” statement would have cost him an exit from the playing field.

      So he screwed up 3 calls by then?? Sounds like he is s terrible ump. It's the second inning. Ever hear of 3 strikes and you're out? I bet this ump hasn't. Find a new line of work, you suck st this one

    It doesn't matter if you look the part if you make no visible effort to get a call right. Take the mask off, exit to the left of the catcher, find the ball, make the call. Do not put the mask on until your conversation with the coach is complete.

    Looked and sounded like it mattered more to coach and parents, girl was ready to bat again. Coach should have kept his finger out of the dirt and had a conversation, maybe asked him to confer with other umpire. Once that's done, nothing you can do. You can't undo that call, but you can teach your kids how to handle it better.

    I did that once as an umpire ,the ball was rolling down the 3rd baseline & absolutely going foul & the 3rd baseman picked it up right on the line, but I was already set to call foul ball because it was obvious that’s what was gonna happen but the player made a mistake picking it up & I blew the call anticipating that the player would do the correct thing.

    I am an umpire and will agree that was the incorrect call.
    However, as soon as the coach drew it the dirt he would be tossed. If I was feeling generous I may say "where was it" to see if he would do it again.
    I will also say that all of the critics should put on some gear and give it a go.

      I am an umpire, and this guy is a disgrace to umpires... he doesn't know a BASIC rule. Then he threatens the coaches and fans because HE made a bad call!!

      I have been umpiring mostly HS and American Legion ball for over 33 years and have never seen a call as ridiculously wrong as this one was. This umpire is incompetent or dishonest.

      @@alanhess9306 LOL! I've been coaching HS softball for 24 years. We see calls as ridiculously wrong as this on a regular basis! Unfortunately, resources devoted to recruitment and training of umpires below the college level is seriously lacking. For above average high school softball competition, the skill level of umpires has not kept up with the advancement in skill level of the players now playing the game.

    Everybody is focusing on the bad call, and here I am looking at these future All-Stars with respect and admiration. Pitcher zinged in a fast ball that 90% of us in the comment section couldn't have hit. Batter absolutely scorching it up the base line to first. Catcher zipping in a perfect throw to first base. These little ladies have some seriously good skills for their ages! Good on all of them!

    Excuse me sir BUT the entire home plate is fair ball ! Yeah it’s only kids but you have no idea how much it means to them. Suck it up, Correct the call and send the kid to first. Ugh

      The catcher stopped playing when the ball was declared foul. You can’t place the batter on first.

      You cannot un-foul a foul ball. Who knows if the batter runner would have made it to first because once you kill the play, everybody is supposed to stop.

    Major league coaches are paid big bucks to argue calls. MLB umpires are paid big bucks to argue back. The show is part of why MLB fans pay to attend games. But this is not MLB! Why youth league coaches attempt to mimic the MLB show is beyond explanation! Yes this umpire got it wrong, but he is not a major league umpire. Young players must be taught the concept that "it isn't what it is, its what the umpire thinks it is"! Get over it and move on with the game! This umpire should be commended for the way he promptly handled the coach's theatrics without escalating the situation!

    I'd bet that most of the umpires who have left the sport over horrid sportsmanship would have gotten this call right. Too bad that behavior like what this coach is displaying has chased so many good umpires away.

      It was a bad call and yes they do happen. However, there is no reason the bunted ball sitting in front of the plate should be called foul. This umpire is lazy and incompetent.

      It's not even CLOSE to being "questionable". It's a HORRIBLE call. The ball was in fair territory by over a FOOT!! Then, the ump threatens the coach... over HIS horrible call!!

      @@stoneymcneal2458 He has a right to point out that the ump royally screwed up. The ump needs to know the rules so he doesn't keep making HORRIBLE calls later in the game. Could the coach have pointed out the umps mistake, then walked back to the coaches box? Yes. But, the ump could've handled the situation soooo much better. I am an ump, so I know.

    Did the ball it the bat a second time? I heard two ticks. Pointing to the ground is pushing it, but at :38 As soon as he said, "you're 1 for 4, now" I'd toss him.
    If the ump is been given this much shit and its only the top of the second....gonna be a long day.

    I was ok with the coach until he said the 1 for 4 comment. I get the frustration but he is the leader of a team of young kids. Part of that job is teaching sportsmanship even when you do not get the call. It was called a foul ball, if you want to discuss it between innings and tell him what you saw or ask questions that is fine.

    Not a good call at all. I think the umpire was quick to make the call and as a result he made the wrong call.
    The ball did roll back just a bit but never enough to go into foul territory.
    Then again the coach has no idea how to discuss a blown call. If that was me behind the plate he would have been ejected for drawing a circle in front of the plate.

      I've been umpiring for a long time and I've seen many wrong calls. There is no reason this umpire should get tis call wrong. This is truly egregious. It's absolutely one of the worst calls I've ever seen.

    Coach should have been tossed the second he reached down and marked the dirt with his finger. Ump got the call wrong, but the coach should be in the parking lot - not back at third running his mouth

      @@crampdstyl1 Clearly this official was unavailable to play the game too, no great loss. He wanted to make up his own rules than enforce them on the kids and have an ego about it and be stubborn out of spite even though he was wrong and knew it, just couldn't back down and let the kids play. Better to have any parent in there as an official that is willing to admit they were wrong and let the kids play

    It's his call - right or wrong, accurate or not. He called it IMMEDIATELY - the whining woman in the video. Just stop talking OR buy some gear and get on the field. The Dad Coach who points to a spot? Any guesses on what happens in an MLB game? And yes, fines are part of an ejection.
    So let's review -
    The Umpire quickly and loudly makes play call
    Everyone yells and screams
    Coach points to a spot
    No one wants to Umpire, but everyone has an opinion.
    Good luck finding a Robot that can umpire a girls softball game

    Surprising we have Umps at all given they literally could be beaten or killed on a bad call. If you are thinking about volunteering for youth sports, know that there is a parent or coach out there who would kill you over a bad call.

      If the ball hits the plate and ends up in fair territory its a fair ball. But if its hit into fair territory and moves backwards onto the plate and is touched, its a foul ball.@@djflaffwaffe2462

      ​@@ryant115 I worked state regional Legion tournaments and HS playoffs every year as well as college level summer ball. I never went to a pro school so that was pretty much as high as I could go and that was fine since I never aspired to work professional ball.
      Of course I missed a few calls over 3 decades of umpiring. But if you don't think this guy is incompetent, you know nothing about umpiring. How can he get this call so wrong? How many years and at what level of umpiring experience do you have? I suspect you are nothing but a clueless casual baseball fan that thinks he knows more than he does.

      @@alanhess9306 No line of sight to the ball due to the catcher and assumed the catcher picked it up in foul territory. That's how he missed the call. Everyone is an "expert" when they're seeing replay video from a POV other than the umpire. However, until you can analyze it correctly to determine how to help rather than call everyone incompetent because they don't meet you're made up threshold in your head, you're nothing more than an useless talking head looking for attention. Take that to heart and get over yourself.

      LOL! This is not baseball! Strategic use of the short game can be a game changer in fast pitch softball. Any competent coach understands its value, understands when and when not to use it, and teaches young players the skills required to execute.

    As soon as the man ( he’s not a coach) reached down and indicated where the ball was touched he must be ejected. When he said,” You are 1 for 4 he must be ejected. Demonstrative motions are an ejection as well as getting personal. It was a terrible bunt and terrible defense and a terrible call. The man is lucky anyone is willing to umpire lousy baseball.
