I thought the same, but then thought, with this squad there doesn't need to be 'experiments', the notion shouldn't exist' we are blessed with interchangeable players and should be able to put a performance in no matter what the starting eleven. It's solely down to him and his limitations

He probably doesn't want to show all his cards yet so the opposition can be ill prepared when he finally drop Foden and bring in Gordon whose pace would be a problem to handle. Right now the weakest links in the team are Foden and Trippier. If they get dropped the team will be more balanced

Championship mangers aren’t that bad
We have had many of the best managers in the world, but have never had such a squad of talented players as those of the last 3 tournaments, so it is not always down to the wrong manager, but in this case, perhaps it is. One thing is certain, playing players out of position has never worked at international level, and that is down to the manager, not the players.

How many tournaments, over the years, have we looked at an England lineup and said, “We’re in with a great chance with a squad like this”. No group of footballers underperform like England and I can’t work it out. We’ve had a selection of the best managers in the world and they haven’t been able to get an England team to play their best football. It’s not Southgate’s fault, it has to be the casual, can’t be arsed attitude of some very rich footballers who just don’t feel pride in wearing the England shirt.

Everyone has different ideas about what team and tactics Southgate should pick, and with so much new talent available, it's natural to try different combinations.
Yet, why he's not giving chances to Gordon, Palmer, and Wharton seems strange to me.
Gareth always tries to rationalise everything - football is about passion - passion gives you joy, spontaneity, creativity and happy fans - rationality gives you... well Gareth Southgate.
No high press, no tempo, no energy, no cohesion = no real direction from the management team. Southgate needs to get a grip and fast.

Souness is one of the many pundits around these days who prior to the tournament, thought England would be the real deal. They are all way off the mark. There has been no evidence to support the view that England are a top footballing team. The modern day pundits just deal in controversy and very little else.

It was that bad, it was like watching Utd this season! Joking of course (nothing can be that bad) but it was like watching the England from the Beckham, Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard days.
No doubt these guys are talented individuals, but this XI cannot play together cohesively. Stick Foden in the middle with Bellingham, ahead of Rice or Mainoo / Wharton and then put two natural wingers either side.
I don't understand why Southgate is playing players who demonstrate a different profile to the one he is trying to create. Such as Foden, who whilst on the left wing, will always drift inside leaving a gaping hole on the left. Kane will always drop into the middle of the pitch, meaning you're always going to be deep and no-one (from this XI) will run on, that can't be hard for him to work out.
Unless things improve in the next game as Slovenia, we'll drift into the next round and get beaten by an organised team.

Im a massive TAA fan but being realistic, its not worked him being in midfield, however that is not the reason england have been poor in the opening 2 games. Did we improve when gallagher came on alongside rice, no. The manager is clueless, without the ball this team has no aggression or energy, no idea were players need to be positionally in order to press, and going forward no fluidity or idea as to how were trying to attack either wide or through the middle of the pitch. The manager doesnt want to take any risks and is trying to hedge his bets and just nick games, his negativity is flowing through this england team, trent is not the scapegoat!!!!

Southgate is a rubbish manager and I have no idea why he’s still in charge. Such quality players & he has no idea how to use the lads to their strength.
I think Trent is only good in that role if he played "the pirlo" type role but it cuts Bellingham out the game. Unless he is a combative midfielder which he isn't its pointless, plus we have Rice to do it. Against Bosnia in the friendly he was further right putting in loads of balls and i'm sure he scored from that right hand area. He should be a sub for either Walker or Saka on the right and just utilise he's crossing ability for Kane. We have natural centre midfielders on the bench who on form have been outstanding and not nicking a game.
He used that KP quote as a get out which was poor he;s had amble amount of time to figure it out and he hasn't. We also cannot sit on a 1 nil never have or ever will be able to especially with ha ropey back 5 which is one of the weakest we've had in recent memory.

I just saw a headline Sky, "Is this the end of the Alexander-Arnold midfield experiment?". EXPERIMENT? In a major tournament. This just sums Southgate up, he has no idea what he's doing, no idea what his best team his, no idea what his players' best positions are. He's been in the job for over 7 years and still doesn't know this, how do people defend him?
I've always been frustrated that we didn't know our starting 11. The game against France in the World Cup felt like the first time there was a solid starting 11. BUT we get annoyed when he picks the same players, and we get annoyed when he picks new players who haven't played together. To be fair to him, he has like 6 weeks a year with players and we want him to pick on form, in which case, he'd have a new squad every single international break.
I do think it's time to change but can't understate how great the foundation Southgate's built in the national set up. But maybe now we need a ruthless winning manager (not sure we have that in England though)

Southgate is the worst manager I've ever seen at this level and I've been saying it for 8 years! He managed to get a then decent Middlesborough team relegated before smarming his way into the FA set up.... Massively out of his depth he has no clue what he is doing.... When you are playing with 2 Central Mids the partner ship is everything. They need to instinctly know what to cover, what runs to make, where to be available and what moves to make to compliment each other. When you’ve got someone in their who not only doesn’t know the role but also hasn’t got that partnership your carrying a player in the most important part of the pitch.
Trent cannot start in a midfield 2. He doesn’t do it at club level and doesn’t know the position. A RB stepping into space with 3 midfielders around him is just not the same thing. England are almost playing with 1 man less. Obviously Phillips shouldn’t be there but at least he knows the position and how to build that partnership. The failure of Southgate is the sticky with Phillips for so long despite the clear signs he needed someone else, leaving it last minute then throwing Trent in just because he can cross a ball.
The "experiment" started the day he turned up with no left footed defenders ... Its a compromise from that point forward. Shuffling his pack with countless players out of their best position. And he ended up with 11 right foot players finishing the game against Denmark.

What GS does alone under his bed sheets when all is quiet around him has nothing to do with the normal unfolding debacle that is England at major tournaments.
Southgate deserved the sack after the first game. It was immediately apparent he's learned absolutely nothing from his past failures.
Look at that smile on Souness's face.
Trent VASTLY outperformed Gallagher, who replaced him. It has nothing to do with Trent or midfielders v right backs. Southgate set the team up with Foden, Bellingham, and Kane all occupying the same exact space in midfield and NO LEFT SIDE PRESENCE. Trent is a passer of the ball. There are no runners to pass to. The boys are picking the ball up in midfield and staring out 5 of their mates all 3 yards from them. You don't have any width in the team and it's so easy to just smother England in possession because they have no space to move the ball into.

The good news? Bellingham can play just about every midfield position without a major drop in his contribution to the team. Doing better than Foden did so far, shouldn’t be a problem…. Alternatively he could play Gordon on the left and Bellingham next to Rice,, or? For some reason I can’t help to think that the highly sought after manager doesn’t have a clue which option would be in the best interest of his team’s success…. Bellingham on the left and Gallagher next to Rice? Benching Foden, Bellingham at 10, Gordon on the left and Gallagher next to Rice? The fact that Southgate seems to have no clue how to balance his midfield is astonishing to say the least.. I find it hilarious how the fans were saying how brave GS was putting Trent in midfield and so many clamouring for this, now , no one is. England fans are also the problem

Saying its brave to put Trent as a midfielder isn't the same as saying its a good idea. The fact is Trent playing there has not worked, he's not a midfielder, not technically good enough when on the ball under pressure. He's good when he's got time to pick out a pass when he has time to do so but in that central midfield position he has been found wanting and is a liability. That's not his fault, the blame lies solely at the person playing him in that position
My biggest issue isn't the fact that he tried Trent in that position, it could have been a good move with his passing capabilities. But the fact that he played him there again when it was clear and obvious that he isn't capable after the first game, that is unforgivable. The confidence of these lads now will be at an all-time low going into the knock phase if they don't rip Slovenia to pieces, a standard win won't suffice.
Everyone keeps blaming TAA but our best spell in both matches came when he was on the pitch and there was no improvement after he was subbed.
