The "experiment" started the day he turned up with no left footed defenders ... Its a compromise from that point forward. Shuffling his pack with countless players out of their best position. And he ended up with 11 right foot players finishing the game against Denmark. Astonishing
The only surprise, is that people are surprised. England have got a Championship manager, trying to win an International competition. It will end in tears once again, until a proper proven manager is made the manager of England.
We have had many of the best managers in the world, but have never had such a squad of talented players as those of the last 3 tournaments, so it is not always down to the wrong manager, but in this case, perhaps it is. One thing is certain, playing players out of position has never worked at international level, and that is down to the manager, not the players.

When you are playing with 2 Central Mids the partner ship is everything. They need to instinctly know what to cover, what runs to make, where to be available and what moves to make to compliment each other. When you’ve got someone in their who not only doesn’t know the role but also hasn’t got that partnership your carrying a player in the most important part of the pitch. Trent cannot start in a midfield 2. He doesn’t do it at club level and doesn’t know the position. A RB stepping into space with 3 midfielders around him is just not the same thing. England are almost playing with 1 man less. Obviously Phillips shouldn’t be there but at least he knows the position and how to build that partnership. The failure of Southgate is the sticky with Phillips for so long despite the clear signs he needed someone else, leaving it last minute then throwing Trent in just because he can cross a ball.
Graeme bang on as usual, Bellingham is our best number 10 but hes also our best number 8 so play him there and let Foden/Palmer play the 10, their best positions. Gareth and his obsession with two holding midfielders still holding England back

@@stretfordenders4013 Ten hag is much better given the injuries and players he had, England under Southgate plays like it is playing in Euro for the first time.
What GS does alone under his bed sheets when all is quiet around him has nothing to do with the normal unfolding debacle that is England at major tournaments.
Leaving Grealish behind was such an act of stupidity that I lost interest before the tournament started. To make matters worse, he gave Grealish up for Gordon, who he has left on the bench. Unbelievable.
I called it months ago....there's only a slim chance England will go far in this tournament because EVERY time they come up against a decent side, they crumble. It's weird how these players cannot replicate their club form for England on a consistent basis! I think we're all wearing rose tinted glasses!
Gazza made a difference for england because he would run forward beat 1-2 men draw other players towards him and pass to the player with space who would then draw another man to him creating more space. This england team want to play walking football thinking they will slowly pass it round a team who are back in formation
Saka taken off was insanity. He was the only person on the pitch that looked dangerous for England. Worst match I've ever seen for England. Shocking. Playing around with the ball from the back, giving the ball away. Not harassing anyone at the front. Truly awful.
He did the same against France in the world cup. I think he will take Sake off no matter what is happening on the pitch. He has no clue about game management.
Is Luke shaw injured? Regardless, even if there aren’t any big name left backs available, he could have taken some lesser known left backs to the euros and given them a chance to shine. And I mean actual left backs.
The worst of it came towards the end where the players didn’t really seem to know whether they were pressing or trying to play for the drawer. There was also arguing on the pitch, which tells you everything you need to know. I also noticed a picture with Bellingham and Southgate leaving the pitch and the look on Bellingham’s face spoke 1000 words!
I find it hilarious how the fans were saying how brave GS was putting Trent in midfield and so many clamouring for this, now , no one is. England fans are also the problem
Saying its brave to put Trent as a midfielder isn't the same as saying its a good idea. The fact is Trent playing there has not worked, he's not a midfielder, not technically good enough when on the ball under pressure. He's good when he's got time to pick out a pass when he has time to do so but in that central midfield position he has been found wanting and is a liability. That's not his fault, the blame lies solely at the person playing him in that position
My biggest issue isn't the fact that he tried Trent in that position, it could have been a good move with his passing capabilities. But the fact that he played him there again when it was clear and obvious that he isn't capable after the first game, that is unforgivable. The confidence of these lads now will be at an all-time low going into the knock phase if they don't rip Slovenia to pieces, a standard win won't suffice.
Trent VASTLY outperformed Gallagher, who replaced him. It has nothing to do with Trent or midfielders v right backs. Southgate set the team up with Foden, Bellingham, and Kane all occupying the same exact space in midfield and NO LEFT SIDE PRESENCE. Trent is a passer of the ball. There are no runners to pass to. The boys are picking the ball up in midfield and staring out 5 of their mates all 3 yards from them. You don't have any width in the team and it's so easy to just smother England in possession because they have no space to move the ball into.
The "experiment" clearly didn't work, but Southgate chose to restart the same 11, to continue the experiment and presumably to give the boys a chance to show they can play after all. The first sign of madness, is repeating the same thing and expecting a different result. How long as Phillips been gone? Ahhh, Gareth, poor you are you missing him? Kane looked like he was out for a Sunday stroll. He made ONE, JUST ONE, forward effective pass to Saka and then just slowly jogged towards the goal, ensuring that there was no one there to receive the ball back. He's clearly pissed about the setup, or perhaps he's pining for Phillips as well.
When he called up Mainoo I was impressed and thought ah yes hes seen the missing piece and grown the balls to pick him regardless of age and experience.. Then he goes and plays someone out of position there instead.
not physical enough and he and Gallagher left Rice isolated time after time vs Serbia. Serbia should have scored, half the England players are not international quality players.

Southgate's managerial pedigree is plain to see, and has been for years. So let's take a look at his managerial pedigree ..... 2005-2006 Middlesbrough finish 14th 2006 - Becomes Middlesbrough Manager (despite not having his coaching qualification) 2006-2007 - Middlesbrough finish 12th 2007-2008 - Middlesbrough finish 13th 2008-2009 - Middlesbrough Relegated in 19th. 2009 - Southgate Sacked. 4 Years out of Football 2013 - 2016 - Coach of England U-21 2015 - Finished bottom of group and knocked out of U21 Euros. So.... 3 years in Prem Management where he was sacked for relegating Middlesbrough. 4 years out. Then 3 years not doing much with the U21 side. Are we honestly surprised that he looks clueless????? He's not qualified. This isn't Ancelotti we're talking about here. This isn't Pep. He never earned any stripes as a top class manager. He's totally unproven and I think it shows every time England play. I would literally prefer Sam Allardyce, because Sam can at least get average players to put a shift in.
I said that to my mates with regards Kalvin Phillips with tongue firmly in cheek, but cannot believe Southgate came out with that statement,he looks lost and bereft of Ideas, and that will translate itself on the pitch
How come it is always the very people who don't know what they are doing who control things? Every single pundit last night had a better idea than Gareth. Truly baffling.
I don't want to bash a manager who has taken us to a semi-final and a final in the last few tournaments. I am however frustrated at Southgate for thinking that a midfield screen of Declan Rice (box to box, but plays as an 8 for Arteta) and Trent Alexander Arnold (a fullback who inverts in certain circumstances for Liverpool) ... so Rice and TAA are the midfield that we want to go up against Portugal, Spain, France or Germany later in the tournament? So we honestly think Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes and Palhinha won't run rings around us? Or Kroos and Andrich won't make mincemeat? Or Rabiot and Kante? For goodness sakes.... this is a side that might limp through the group stages, might get lucky in the last 16. But unless we actually start picking MIDFIELDERS, we will get beaten by players who will be licking their lips against this stuff.
He's had months to prepare his plans A, B, C, etc. Kalvin Philips was out of the picture months ago so if his system, whatever that is, requires that type of player then he should have sorted one out or changed the system. Experimenting now is ridiculous, but so is selecting a squad with only one left back who hasn't played this year and still isn't fit. Man Utd fans should be pleased with this development as he's working himself out of their manager's position.
Scrubgate doesn’t know what day of the week it is! You play Trent who’s strength is his ball deliveries but you only have one player in the front 3 who runs in behind… you then take Trent off and bring on players who run in behind. WHAT ARE YOU DOING 😂 You then imply that if we had Kalvin Phillips, who’s contribution to this entire season was being sent off for West Ham, is the reason it’s not working. BAFFLING

So many fans have seen all this before, it's disappointing but no shock. What happens next feels easy to predict: 1 - A better performance in the last group game and/or last 16 2 - Media forget the bad vibes and get back on the wagon. "England have arrived" etc... 3 - The same thing happens again and England go out with a weak performance, characterised by an inability to adapt during a game 4 - Southgate leaves and gets knighted 5 - Everyone gets excited about the next England manager prospects 6 - Everyone is disappointed with the new England manager appointment Cynic? Yep.
Southgate is a rubbish manager and I have no idea why he’s still in charge. Such quality players & he has no idea how to use the lads to their strength.
Love how calm and rational simon is. Anyone sensible has seen this for the past 4 years at least. We have been incredibly fortunate, which is strange and funny as before gareth we had no luck at all. Easy draws, easy games yet people are only now seeing the bad performances as what they are? As soon as i saw the serbia slovenia game was a draw i saw this coming. Arguably he isnt learning that position as he plays it all the time at club level. The team need to keep the ball and have runners. Sure put Warton Mainoo. Then you will see how they cope with 'retreat ball' what will they do when the other team has more possession. 25 uninterrupted passes. The imbalance of this side isn't down to just a ' 6' many many more issues
Worst manager England have had in living memory should have sacked him after he blew the World Cup. And the Kalvin Philips missing being the problem is just laughable he hasn’t got a clue. Played and managed at a mediocre level we will never win anything with a FA yes man in charge of the team
Look Denmark are 3rd or 4th Division types and well the pitch wasn't the best ,is a factor HOWEVER the performance was pathetic. Look you have to dominate the centre (midfield) or if you haven't got the skill let them have it and when you get the ball go Long. There was away to beat Denmark easily and that was conventional wingers take um on by line and crosses over and over and over . But that is simply imagination in England's eyes
Imagine if Man City or Arsenal made injury excuses. Southgate should go back to being a lower league manager. He's been scamming the FA out of £ millions for 7 years.
Just a few weeks ago, there was a clamour by the media and pundits to start trent in midfield, whilst ignoring the young midfield options they had all in the name of inexperience. Look at Spain, Turkey and the other nations. If you're good enough, you're old enough.
Southgate's tone when he speaks sounds depressed. The stress and anxiety of his role and the task at hand, is blocking his the level of energy he should be giving to the role. He doesn't sound scared, but he sounds like he is trying to consciously hold his composure - it all seems unnatural. He is no longer the right guy to get the most out of these players. England need belief, which comes from natural positivity.
England need to pick their best team rather just rely on individuals to bail them out. I’d go with Pickford Walker Stones Guehi trippier Rice Bellingham Mainoo Saka Kane Gordon Mainoo to give more composure in midfield and help rice defensively, Gordon to stretch the game on the left

Trent. Chances created 3. Line breaking passes in the opponents half 5. Trent created more in 50 mins than any other England player. Also didn't endanger the team with the crazy loss of possession like Kane, Rice etc etc. When Trent left the pitch there was 4t minutes of the second half left to play. England did nothing. Where are his runners ? Why can't the team keep the ball ? Love a scapegoat don't they
"Kane in an unassailable position" and you think that Southgate is changing because he took him off? A blind man could have worked out that Kane needed replacing. ONE TOUCH IN THE BOX!
I think the local teen team could best this England squad....endless talent endlessly lost on the pitch. It's so boring to watch... no aggression, no desire, does anyone ACTUALLY care?

Saka’s not physically strong enough
Can you imagine the flack Saafgate would be getting if we had lost that match? He got away with one there.
He did the same against France in the world cup. I think he will take Sake off no matter what is happening on the pitch. He has no clue about game management.
This is on the FA!
Any team serious about winning wouldn't have gone into another tournament with Southgate as manager

We’re nothing to do with Southgate’s choices. He’s hardly going to let the general public influence him. That’s hilarious.
Fans are "the problem". What does that even mean? Lol
Everyone keeps blaming TAA but our best spell in both matches came when he was on the pitch and there was no improvement after he was subbed.
this is proof of bad tactics & management of team. this "experiment" shows a complete & utter ignorance of what we should be doing at this stage.
Crazy how these lads gave Ole Gunner a hard time and called him clueless yet Southgate still manages to escape the criticism.
I’ve heard that Southgate would make a ‘great coach’ for England if they took his teeth out and put seats in !!!!
Southgate deserved the sack after the first game. It was immediately apparent he's learned absolutely nothing from his past failures.

Southgate's managerial pedigree is plain to see, and has been for years. So let's take a look at his managerial pedigree .....
2005-2006 Middlesbrough finish 14th
2006 - Becomes Middlesbrough Manager (despite not having his coaching qualification)
2006-2007 - Middlesbrough finish 12th
2007-2008 - Middlesbrough finish 13th
2008-2009 - Middlesbrough Relegated in 19th.
2009 - Southgate Sacked.
4 Years out of Football
2013 - 2016 - Coach of England U-21
2015 - Finished bottom of group and knocked out of U21 Euros.

England haven't done well in the past because of Southgate's management. They've managed to progress despite him.
One of the few sensible comments in here
He's had months to prepare his plans A, B, C, etc.
BAFFLING
Almost like he was listening to all this "experts" on the Tv that was so excited with trent being such a world class maradona or messi kind of player that going to win games
So many fans have seen all this before, it's disappointing but no shock. What happens next feels easy to predict:
1 - A better performance in the last group game and/or last 16
2 - Media forget the bad vibes and get back on the wagon. "England have arrived" etc...
3 - The same thing happens again and England go out with a weak performance, characterised by an inability to adapt during a game
4 - Southgate leaves and gets knighted
5 - Everyone gets excited about the next England manager prospects
6 - Everyone is disappointed with the new England manager appointment
Cynic? Yep.
