    I used to be on the academy figure skating team there! Doing warmups in front of that turtle (when he was there--he disappeared a lot??) was kinda creepy. The rink is huge, and when you're skating on an open day in the middle of summer, you've got the whole court to yourself.
    The only Saints game I ever saw was when the academy did an opening number for the team. I'm not really a hockey girl, but I gotta admit, I was feeling the hype. Shivers, every time we stepped out there.
    You have to see the learn-to-skate hockey kids. They put the Saints to shame, with how hard they barrel into walls. :)

      @@SACSportsAdventures having had my kids play in a lot of these arenas I'll give you my opinion. Omaha has the biggest and probably the nicest arena in the league, it is a full size arena. I've seen the outside of the Green Bay rink and it also looks like a full size arena guessing it's the second largest. Cedar Rapids would be right behind them on that list. Madison's arena is older but has had recent remodels, they do have a cool bar area up top but feels dark with old seating. Waterloo's feels a bit old and they have an olympic size rink so it makes the stands feel smaller, Lincoln, NE is pretty old, dark, and feels a bit run down. Des Moines is seriously old and rumors are will be replaced soon, Buc arena is a dump to be honest. Mason City has maybe the newest rink in the league and is pretty nice probably near the top of the list. Chicago Steel is another old arena with odd seating. I hadn't realized I had been in so many till I started commenting, if I ranked them I would go. Omaha, Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Mason City, Waterloo, Madison, Chicago, Lincoln, Des Moines. I assume Green Bay would be in the top 3 but I've never actually been inside. Even though Des Moines is a dump it does have a very old school hockey feel to it.

    Saints added a nice big screen where the U.S. flag was (flag is right next to it). Opening video on it gives me goosebumps everytime!! The hotdogs are also in a foil packaging now. Merchandise shop has also been moved. Hope you can visit again!!

    The arena was renamed about two months ago to ImOn Arena, and got a bit of a touch up signage and advertisement wise. The turtle is a city of Dubuque thing, about a decade ago an expansion of our River Museum occurred and to help raise funding they sold those large cement turtles, business's bought them and painted them to match their needs. They are becoming less frequent to find but they used to be pretty common thru the city. The black boards are about a year old, the arena underwent a major foundation repair and the boards were replaced at that time, took a bit to get used to for the regulars. The cowbells are because Dubuque competes in an in season trophy contest with Waterloo and Cedar Rapids called the Cowbell Cup, best record between those 3 teams gets the trophy. Johnny was on a Clark Cup winning team and is now part of the ownership group that owns the team. One other recent change is there is now a D3 NCAA team for University of Dubuque so there are new logos in the ice for their team. The video board and food/prices do suck - can't argue with that.

The only good thing about eating there is on Friday Nights they have chick fil a come in and sells they're sandwiches chips and cookies over by the open end of the arena. I hope they find something better for the concessions

    That giant bobblehead turtle has seen some shit, man. The layout of the stands and concourse reminds me a bit of the Cornell U hockey arena, makes for a good atmosphere! I had no idea Johnny Hockey played for Dubuque either, so that's awesome! Bummer about the sad hot dog, man

    I havene't experienced aluminium/aluminum flooring in rinks before. What is it like with all those aluminium/aluminum flooring compared to good old concrete? Did it feel solid? Did it add to the atmosphere? Did it make lot more noise? Did the stadium feel like it rocked or was it really solid under foot?

    • @BigDogWaddy
      @BigDogWaddy 8 месяцев назад +2

      Only the stands are aluminum, the concourse is cement. It's solid and does not rock, it does make the noise louder when people stump their feet.

    • @AnthonyGriz
      @AnthonyGriz 8 месяцев назад +1
