  • The WNBA, led by its rookie star players, Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, has experienced a record-breaking year in most categories including in attendance, viewership and merchandise sales. Three new expansion teams - San Fransisco, Toronto and Portland, and a $2.2 billion 11-year media rights deal with Disney, Amazon Prime and NBC are expected to flush the league with cash in the coming years. Yet, player salaries are low in comparison to the NBA and other sports leagues while the league struggles to become profitable. CNBC’s Tala Hadavi digs into the WNBA’s business model and explores why it may take years before the longest-running women’s sport league becomes profitable.

Because one year of popularity does not lead to a successful league. Let's wait and see if this popularity continues. Second, honestly, the WNBA is a minor league compared to the men. As someone who makes and lives on 51k, the idea that they cannot live on 200K is dumbfounding to me.

To be fair how well you can live off that much depends on where you are and what other services are required. $200K in a small town or even city is plenty. $200K in a HUGE city like LA or New York where you have to live in more congested areas for work and are expected to subsidize costs of training and medicine? Not so much. Then learning your male counterparts make 10x that, even if it makes sense why, adds salt to the wound. (Not saying that's specifically what's happening here but as an example.)

Lowering the rim for women would make the game more exciting to watch. Men have a physical advantage, so constantly comparing the two isn't fair. No one really wants to watch professional women’s basketball players just doing layups-lowering the rim could bring more excitement to the game.

These comments are pathetic and hateful. I'm gonna debunk them.
    1) "The WNBA always loses money" - This is because the NBA has always sold the WNBA TV rights as a small package attached to their rights. Thus it never garners competition from media comapnies on the open market. If they handled the rights correctly, the WNBA would've been making a lot more money all this time.
    2) "Why can't a top player live on 200k if another can live on 50k" - You have no idea the amount of financial committment it takes to be a world class athlete. From trainers to chefs to doctors to practice facility hours. Its a very expensive endeavour especially if youre in a league that does not have those supportive structures as a given.

All of these are first world problems. We're talking about salaries for people whose main job is entertainment.
Professional sports are not an essential business and so if the market doesn't find value in the WNBA as much as the NBA, then their pay is going to reflect that.
You can't just throw more money at the problem. I don't even watch men's sports, so my interest is women's sports is nil.

If the WNBA wants to survive. They gotta donthe hard work and develop and grow. The NBA was in a similar situation in the 80's. Then Magic and Larry Legend arrived. The NBA rode that wave and marketed that rivalry. Then in the 85 MJ arrived and the NBA went into marketing overdrive. Even expanding into the foreign market with the Olympic Dream Team. It appears that WNBA isnt willing to do the hard work to grow their product. And finally as long as they only have a 35 game regular season, in addition to playing their season during the summer, they will fall short. And when the NBA no longer is willing to fund their deficit the league will no longer exist.

How many games do the women play in the WNBA and overseas? The WNBA season ia 40 games, the first round of the playoffs are a beat of 3, the conference finals, and WNBA finals are a best of 5, meanwhile thw NBA season is 82 games and all 4 rounds of the playoffs are a best of 7. If you want it to be equal, play the same amount of games and bring in more money. If salary is based on a percentage of revenue and games played, its probably a lot closer to being equal than people think

I think Clark vs. Wilson would be the big ticket rivalry that could spark interest in a Bird/Magic way, assuming Clark gets good enough to compete, I think she will in one or two years, but in a sense it's good that she's losing to her now to set the stakes as it were

Outside of equality argument, it's going to be difficult for a league of lesser skill to compete with a higher one. No biasm - just normal human anatomy...men are bigger, faster, stronger which is why there's a separate league for men and women. A lesser tier league will never garnish the same benefits the pinnacle performance league will.

WNBA wouldn’t even be relevant without Caitlin Clark if they wanted to make money they should have let Caitlin be on team USA they would get even more millions of people to watch women’s basketball they always say we don’t get paid enough okay try to get causal fans instead like many nba players said lower rim Derrick rose is reason why I love basketball I was a few months old when Jordan retired so for me growing up in late 2000s early 2010s in Chicago Drose was everything to me that’s how a lot of kids today are with Caitlin would guys like lebron MJ Vince Carter be as popular if it wasn’t for them dunking a flying though the air or curry and his deep 3s and Killer crossovers wnba players need to realize this a business and you are a entertainer your job is to put own a show and win basketball games that’s it that’s all not be activist not beat up the only player bringing in millions of dollars to your league people say Aja Wilson is better then Caitlin Clark okay but does she draw the same viewers and does she sell our arenas every night WNBA players current and former can’t get out of there own way and it’s sad they expect same salary as nba players when nba has been around almost 78 years vs wnba 28 when nba was in its 28th season they made nowhere near as much as they do today these players are delusional and extremely entitled
