  • When you raise animals, you sometimes have to make some hard decisions. I discovered sore hocks in my favorite Doe and her offspring so I had to decide how to handle it.

We have eaten older rabbits like that and have not had any issues with tough meat. We tend to always stew rabbit though.

Wow, new info for me on the hocks. Always thought the issue was wire pens, didn't know about the genetics of them. Amazed how friendly the doe was. 😊 😊

I just got 2 Texas A&M’s from Springfield Mo.
I had bought 2 does from Poplar Bluff area, and the Springfield Tumuks was huge compared to the poplar bluff ones.
Glad to see you join the Tumuk breed

Very good call. It’s way better to back out of a sale and replace genetics than to pass problems onto someone else and perpetuate problems.

I haven’t noticed better heat tolerance in my TAMUKs. They appear to suffer in the heat just as much as my other rabbits.

I bought two TAMUK does and a buck, and one of the does was actually a buck. But, it seemed he .had hypospadias, and the affected male looked like a female until the testes descended. I breed the ones I can for meat, but the more affected males are not good for breeders. The seller said the stock came from the breeding program, but I am not sure.

I haven’t had issues with my New Zealand’s being anti social. I will say probably most of my blue and reds are friendlier, but my white does are still easily handled. I wouldn’t say they necessarily SEEK out my attention but they aren’t nasty or flighty. I breed pedigreed hopefully show quality New Zealand’s. Those who do not meet my expectations for show but still have nice type and rapid growth will be sold for meat brood rabbits. Those I don’t feel represent the breed well go in my freezer.

I accidentally got into raising rabbits. I was given a male and female standard rex, and another female that looks wild. She's super sweet, an amazing mother, but i have heard that you cant eat wild rabbit during certain times of the year, so i sold her litter as pets. Her babies came out having the physique of a wild rabbit, and she has the cotton tail coloring with the big eyes, but her body looks like a domestic. I'm scared to breed her again or use her babies for meat. My rex is also a good mother, but her litter sizes are small (4-7 babies).

I didn’t actually know all that about sore hocks ! Thanks for sharing and I’m sorry you had to make those hard decisions! That is the nature of homesteading but man it’s hard when you get attached to them. Can’t wait to see you at quail con in a few weeks!

You’re going to really like Tamuks. Good temperament and great mothers. They handle the heat here in south Mississippi very well.

Do black New Zealands grow just as fast as white ones. Are there any differences other than color ?

    Chris,
I am considering raising rabbits, and am tending towards the New Zealands. One person wrote that the Tamuks have small litter size. Have you heard anything about that? Will be watching your channel for your experience.

What about Quail breeding? I bought my quails from the same breeder, I don't know if they are related or not. What should I do?

If for eggs breed them. If for meat breed them. I would look for some other stock to add in as you go.
