As a Gen X-er who watched the show when it first aired (I was 29 in 1998), I can say that, while it certainly had its faults, it was genuinely groundbreaking. It was rare to see shows with 4 women leads, with storylines about their friendships AND their sex lives. And Samantha was a revelation: Single, loved sex, and utterly unapologetic. And Miranda was allowed to be a professional, prickly at times, and opinionated without being "put in her place".
I liked the first seasons more than the rest... As you said, they deal with serious issues, at least they try, and they are more realistic, making the girls more relatable. After the popularity of the first seasons, they overdid it with fashion and fancy dinners etc and the plot became more shallow, with some exceptions, for example Charlotte's conceiving challenge and Samantha's cancer. It was like after the first seasons the "existential" or professional or sentimental issues were solved and dating or shopping was the only aspect of their lives. Even Carrie and Aidan's relationship that was shown in many episodes was projected very shallow... like the only aspect in their relationship was if Carrie likes the ring or she is scared of commitment or she hates the country house. No deeper feelings.
Yeah they could have ran with her commitment issues. They should have had her the same wardrobe she had in the 1st season. It was far better than anything else she ended up wearing later on.
The fashion was awesoooome..all the ladies were beautiful in their own way, very edgy wearable with splashes of name brand and couture that was appropriate for their character’s life..sexy, flattering, the cream of NY! I used to live for Samantha’s 80’s power vibe and Chanel
Yeah, I feel like the younger generations don’t understand that “Sex and the City” was really groundbreaking at the time and pushed boundaries. lol It’s honestly a bit sad in a way if you think about it.
Why don’t they see that it was groundbreaking? Even now, women living single at that older age, and dating around a lot, isn’t seen as ideal in society. Plus these women are so independent from men, and close with eachother. No other tv shows like it.
@@Jenny-ls7hfI think it’s seem as more “relatable” then “groundbreaking” because as you said it’s common to hear people talk down on single independent women over the age of 27 because it’s normal amongst women that they can be this. It isn’t a new concept that even women are unsure about, it’s no longer something changing society normals. I hope I made sense 😅
I watched every single episode of the SATC universe for the first time this year. I can’t believe it took me this long to watch this show! My parents wouldn’t approve based on the title of the show. I’m honestly glad I watched it this year at the age of 30 because it’s so relatable❤
My favorite season one episode is “The Baby Shower.” I loved the parts where Samantha defends Charlotte against Laney for stealing her baby name and when she says “I don’t have a baby, everybody drink.”😆
Thank you for this. I think too that SATC is underrated in terms of feminist content. The women have deep friendships and don't promote the bullshit "catfight" attitude. For me it was comforting to watch other women have empowered lives. I'm not in my 20ies anymore, but still this show speaks to me and makes me laugh.
I'm around SJP's age and it was so refreshing to see a show about women my age having good dated, crappy dates, romances that didn't pan out, unashamed casual encounters and talking about their sex lives just like my friends and I did - just in NYC with fancier clothes. You'll notice these seasons are way more diverse too when it comes to the girls' other friends.
The 1st episode of the 1st season is the absolute best in the series and the characters are dressed and styled the way people actually looked at the time. The work of the stylist who took over afterwards is magnificent, but the change in the look combined with the changes they made in the way the characters are written makes the next seasons essentially a completely new show.
Loved your review! I'm reading Bushnell's book now (the collection of columns) and indeed, season 1 is not only heavily influenced, but often repeats whatever is written in the columns line by line. It's amazing to see how they managed to make the best of it on the screen :) season 1 will always stay my favourite

In my opinion Season 1 and 2 are the best seasons of satc. The characters are all really realistic in those seasons and dont become unlikable and the fashion was literally gorgeous.
This is a really late comment, but I wanted to adress your comment @ around the 8 minute mark: "Carrie gets mad at Big for seeing other women, even though they didnt discuss exclusivity." I'm not sure how old you are, but if you're close in age to me at all (25) then you're probably used to the idea of relationships as 'non-exclusive until otherwise specified'. Frankly, that's a VERY recent development and it's not really fair to project that idea onto a show made in the 1990s! From what basically every person over 50 that I know has told me - in the 80s and 90s, it was generally understood that you did NOT date multiple people unless you specifically clarified that you intended to do that. If you went on several dayes with someone, and it came out that you were also dating someone else, you would absolutely have been considered a cheater. A lot of the discourse around 'exclusive vs non-exclusive dating' is a product of the Internet and simply did not exist in the 1990s. Loved the video BTW - just felt like I needed to make this clarification! I agree that Carrie is portrayed as a terrible communicator, but I don't think that this is why!
When Carrie gets upset after finding out that Big is seeing other women.... I've been out of the dating pool for a long time, but when i was younger, it was absolutely expected that a dating relationship was exclusive, and it didn't need a discussion. Just wondering... do younger people nowadays NOT expect exclusivity while dating? Just curious.

Seinfeld never made their characters as something to aspire to be, as role models. They are meant to be laughed at for being so selfish and neurotic.
Entertaining is far more important than role models. Though the moral centre should be felt somewhere in the show, but not in a preachy way.
Literally everyone takes about it
Season 1 was really good I like the fashion in this season this show was indeed groundbreaking even though in some parts it's aged badly
I find that I kind of like Candace Bushnell pronounced as Cadence.
Aidan stan ❤
*looks down at my iphone Rose gold 6se .......
The first season was the best season. The pilot was the best episode.
Um cause we did we just didn’t make blogs on it cause YT wasn’t really a thing then.
Season 1 ws good. Rest become too obsessed with sex n only sex. And it just became predictable
Fashion: Carrie's "naked dress" on her first date with Mr Big....👀😻👀
Where are you from, you have the loveliest voice and accent🫶
I'm from Poland and live in the German-speaking part of Switzerland :)
THERE IS A REBOOT?
It's called And Just Like That. Set in present times with the same cast. No Samantha character, though.
@@lyndylou3642 thanks! Ah no Samantha? Thats too bad, shes my fav. I still have the two movies to watch tho :)
@@bianca3344 the first movie is tolerable and the second is an abomination. Be warned! (I still watched them in theaters though!!)
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
It is CANDACE! NOT 'Cadence'.
What started the whole 'stan' thing?....
@wellofcire I'm pretty sure this word originated from Eminem's song
@@KasiaSopniewska oh WEEEEIRD....'Song'...? Oh, I thought he wrapped...or, whatEVER.....lol...but hey that's a theory: nice to have some sort of explantion at times......your videos are supreme by the way....
all this great work on the video and the creator doesn’t learn how to pronounce “candace”.
i'm really sorry about that
@@KasiaSopniewska We all make mistakes girly, not the end of the world so don’t worry! :) great video
It’s cringeworthy but a great video nonetheless 👏🏾
I’m an ultra fan of SATC and it kills me that you keep butchering CANDICE BUSHNELL’s name 😮
Gen X who watched this show when it aired i was 24 at the time . Im clearly in the minority among the fandom- I strongly dislike Aiden and Steve, never been a fan. Smith is the only one i really loved cause Im Samantha stan ..
We see no.botox in the pilot!!!
Oh, another reminding that AJLT is pure garbage.
