What is what is vegan leather?
"Veg tan" refers to a method of tanning the cowhide into leather. This method uses natural tannins found in certain plants and trees to alter the proteins of the animal skin. It’s one of the oldest methods of tanning and is more environmentally friendly than chemical forms of leather tanning. Veg-tan leather has the longevity and beauty - with that classic leather smell - that leather crafters desire for their artisanal leather goods. Natural veg tan accepts dyes, paints and tooling (stamping and molding) very well and is ideal for crafting bespoke leather goods. On the other hand, vegan leather is a fabric that has a similar appearance to leather but is made from synthetic materials. We hope this is helpful for you!
@SailriteWorkbench Thank you so much!
I recently started looking for organic leather. Does this exist and would you be carrying it in the future?
I ask because I have symptoms related to MCS, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. For your veg tan leather, would you be able to guarantee or provide any certification so that customers can be reasonably assured that there is nothing unnatural or synthetic in/on the leather?
Our veg tan leather is untreated and has no finishing treatment added to it. This leather is processed with all natural and organic compounds. Our leather hides do not come with certification. If you have any addition questions about our leather, feel free to reach out to info@sailrite.com
