War Thunder needs to watch this video.
Panzer 1s would be useless in War Thunder, They were only armed with machine guns so they could only kill flak trucks, They would be helpless against even 1.0 tanks.

Some good information here. I'm somewhat familiar with the European campaigns but still learning some of the subtleties of the Pacific theater. World wars, there are generations alive today that don't comprehend the totality of damage, horror, and loss of life. Respect to those who served.

They bought them. British were pushing their tanks pretty aggressively in the export market in the interwar years.
People seems to forgot, the Western allies did helped China fighting Japan beforr and during World War Two. Even the Germans due to exchange of materials, so they make a deal.
Some warlords already begin buying western equipments.
The Nationalist government purchased them from the Brits.
The british Vickers 6-ton tank was a very popular export tank. The italians based the chassis from many of their tanks on it.
Sam Bowker the Chinese had a lot of tanks French, Italian,British and American.

Pz I was not intended as a training vehicle. It was a typical for it's time 'mobile pillbox' for infantry support.
Also, the Aufs.A had two MG 13s
The purpose of a tank was to support the infantry. This was the early 1930's and that was the goal of the designers. The mission changed when real war started in 1939.

The information that you give us makes for a much more complete picture of the events that most of us probably wouldn't even consider looking for. I actually thought I was reasonable informed about the 20th centenary and the second WW. I guess not anywhere near your good self. I'm surprised you haven't got a commission for a series with one of the big broadcasters? Mind you, the 5 minute format probably isn't something that would appeal to them I guess? Their loss I'd say!

The frequency at which you can present these mini-documentaries is nothing short of astounding.
That is so wild , my dad always had only nice things to say about the Germans and told me weird stories of how they helped the Chinese nationalist during the japanese occupations. Crazy story I'm about to tell, so here goes my grandmother was a nurse from Germany and my grandfather was a Chinese banker who was familiar with the telex machine? I don't really know what that is. Long story short I have never met them so I've only seen old pictures. They met fell in love had 5 kids in total ran off to sabah in fear of Japanese atrocities to Chinese. Crazy right the narrative is always a bit different. Anyways my grandfather joined the resistance being familiar with the telex machine, and soon got caught up in the war and got caught by the japanese army, subsequently him and my grandmother along with the eldest son were summarily executed by decapitation. Leaving behind the newly orphaned 4 kids ages ranging from 6-2 who seriously walked to Singapore for protection. And then a whole new saga begins.
my dad still kicking at 85 keeps 2 momentos in his wallet from back in 42 till the present a picture of his parents and the pin of the Nazi party. Btw his father was only recently awarded a medal and certificate posthumously for his heroic deeds in the war of the pacific. Crazy but true ! Also insane was that her brother came visiting while I was a young child in the 70s. But to say the German s were mot racists in its entirety is not true , as for sure they did have something against the jew. Because my father when I was young would teach me a game with a racist theme song about the jews and I am sure he hadn't a clue that it was inappropriate. I still know it . Dang! I I moved over to the states 20 odd years ago.

I love these video's, there is so much that isn't taught about WWI, or WWII, little things like the Panzer I being in China, I would have never guessed in a hundred years. Many thanks Mark, as usual another great video !
I always fantasize about all those surviving and captured tanks that went missing, that today, right now, they are stored in some small warehouse or garage, collecting dust and garbage on top, waiting for someone who knows what they are to release them.
Who knows... It won't be the first time someone opens a door and finds out an old tank.
Hey Dr. Felton i love your videos as always! I have one question for you on this video. Why did you use iMovie to produce this instead of your normal program that you use? I think that the normal program you use is uniquely suited to your presentation style and I’m sad to see it go. It reminds me of an old slideshow with the clicking sound at every change of a slide. Anyhow, no matter how you do your videos Dr. Felton they always pique my interest so please dont stop:)

A most interesting episode indeed . The Panzer 1 reminds me of a tracked Darlic , the early short wheel based models fitted with the 4 cylinder Krupp Motor was also under powered , until refitted with the 6 cylinder Maybach's! The Spaniards managed to up gun it with a 20 mm Hispano Cannon , which gave it an anti tank capability when fighting Soviet manufactured T-26's

I grew up looking at the photos my father took as a young US Navy sailor serving in the China Fleet during this time, so I have long been familiar with the German helmets and Mausers used by the Chinese forces. Unfortunately, his last roll of film was lost when a Japanese bomb hit the photo shop in Shanghai just before his ship pulled out.
i Wouldnt call the pz1 a training tank, it was clearly designed for combat ( 2 Mgs instead 1 for training; armor out of high quality steel)

You are correct. Heinz Guderian referred the Panzer I as "training tanks". The official records do not state them as training tanks until much later with only the turretless variants were used as such.

the chinese, specifically the NRA (RoC) rarely get any credit for the war effort sadly.
Pre-war Chinese government had constitutional democracy and continued its good relationship with pre-war time Nazi Germany. Not only transporter, in 1937 Chang Kai-Shek acquired 1 then new BF-109 for evaluation, the same year Japan bought 2 Stukas and soon started the war to China.
Would be interesting to see how the Bf109 and the A6m Zero would have faired against each other in a dogfight
