@Joe Shmoe Interesting. The yd100 engine I ordered just showed up yesterday and my cylinder is perfectly fine. I'm about half way done putting it on my bike and I hope to break it in this afternoon.
got a bt100 recently, it goes real good and has really high torque. you pop the clutch and the front wheels up. power is really good for a motorized. one downside is it has 4 mounting bolts on each side and one has snapped. the intakes and stuff are just different shape but still fit any regular carb. the exhaust tho is unique. i honestly recommend the bt over any other kit. i’ve had a really good experience so far.

I did 1300 miles on my bike from fallon nevada to green river wyoming and then back down through northern utah. I wore my back tire at about 900 miles and we took the kit out of the box installed them and then tested the bikes around the block once and headed out to highway 50 and on the road. It was a blast. My friends motor lost power between vernal and duchesne utah at about 1000 miles of everyday use pulling a bike trailer with gear the entire way. They stopped pulling up hill between 6 and 7 percent grade on the road grade of steepness.
Got a question for you. I live in Reno and just ordered my first kit. Have you ever had any issues with cops? I think the law here is anything over 50cc has to be registered to drive on the road. I had thought about that right after I ordered the engine.
@HabitualRUclipsConvict the engine can be shut off and pedaled away so that is what you tell cops if they give you a hard time. They never gave me a hard time. I have been on highway fifty in the lane and a highway patrol rode up behind me waited till it was clear and rode right around me and continued with his day.
I followed your advice. I got the Firestorm Zeda 80 kit and installed it on a Huffy Nel Lusso. This is my first ever motorized bicycle build. I only ran into a few minor problems but they were pretty simple fixes. The only issue I'm having with it is that with the stock NT carburetor that comes in the kit, it's a little bit hard to start when it's cold or after the motor cools down for a while and at wide open throttle at higher rpms, the fuel mixture leans out a bit at times. But when the motor is at operating temperature, it runs really well. These issues can be solved by swapping the carburetor out for a higher performance carburetor. Thank you for the advice. I really appreciate it.
Went with the motoose for my first attempt at the hobby, I've had four scooters stolen in the last several years, against your advice and it's been a great kit, no leaks anywhere, came with old style petcock, rode daily for nearly 4 months now, had ment to put an engine on the bike when I bought it 10 years ago, you're video encouraged me to make the purchase and glad I did, a seven minute ride to work, and confident enough to ride back home to have lunch with the wife daily! When you see those ted flags like Phillip's or JIS bolts on the outside, 6mm studs, etc.. you can bet that same substandard quality continues into the inside of your engine as well. Imo, the reverse is also true however to an extent.
Many thanks for the video, I knew that it would be very useful and informative when one of your first points was about the cheapness of the nuts and bolts on some of the kids and how is indicative of the general value of the kit itself. Have you considered recommendations on the actual bike frame to pick when you're considering motorizing a regular bicycle? As you know there are many factors to consider, including the size of the individual, the particulars of the alloy that the frame is made from ( an alloy with a higher amount of aluminium is more likely to bend or break, especially on the axle Forks) and how the style of bike frame affects the performance of the motor and the speed of the finished motorbike. Also any advice whatsoever recommending front and rear lights for a motorbike would be very useful. It's a problem to run the power for them from the motor, and outside battery is always too heavy, and the generators for regular bicycle like our way 2 delicate to be used at any higher speeds or greater bumps. Batteries that are held inside of a attached bicycle light will bounce out, and the brackets regular bicycle lights always break or end up sending your light flying off into traffic. Yet on a motorized bike in traffic visibility is a priority so sorry these problems is a big deal! Thanks again and keep it up
I bought that first eBay kit. Unbelievably amazing. 8mm studs, great performance, and the g series head. Only issue is that the head nuts are stuck to the studs. Although new studs are cheap, and runs fine..
@@MrJasenstewart97 It’s been a great motor. Still running great. Studs came off the nuts no problem. I do have to buy a new carb for it though. Still running good :)
Thanks for the what to look for section. As someone who lives in Australia none of these specialised websites are available, only amazon and ebay. Even then, none of the specific engines are available, so it was really helpful knowing what to look for.
Great job keeping me intrigued throughout the entire video. Even though I have had an engine for over a year now, I still wanted to see the recommendations of another builder with a lot of experience. Keep up the great videos and stay safe!
I got a YD-100 as my first motorized bike engine, it has been a joy! i got it one year ago and the only thing i had to change was the piston bearing, i make ifood (kind like uber eats delivery) here in Brazil with it, like 8 hours a day and it`s just awesome, it got the toque, reliable (except for the bearing) and it got a decent fuel economy too!
I’ve bought the anbull motors at 14:40 and I can honestly say they are a good motor so far the only issues I’ve had is the sprocket I bought aftermarket hub clamp style DO NOT BUY broke four of my spokes and snapped two of the three sprocket mounts slips and chews up your hub pretty good went to the rag joint instead so much better it’s all about learning as we go.
I bought the 66/80 from Bikeberry. It was on sale last year for $170.00. I've ordered some additional parts from them since and have not , knock on wood, had any real problems with them. As I learn more though I am comfortable looking on other sights now if I need to.
Rag joints are perfectly adequate with a stock or near stock kit. The biggest upside to the clamp on adapters is there's more adjustability side to side.
I'm running ZEDA kits. Some engines that have the 6 1/4in, round "dots" molded into the cylinder fins that can be seen on the outsides of the cylinder. This is known as the "D" cylinder. These engines are simply ported a bit better. The easier that a 2 stroke engine can "Breath" the better it will run. Adding a tuned pipe and a bigger carb are a good starting point.
Amazon is my go to source for my motorized bicycle parts, because if things do not work I can always exchange, plus I can get reviews on certain parts. My jug is a one piece design, and I have no problems with it at all, I put an expansion chamber on it with a magneto upgrade kit and it, without any mods at all.
Makes me wish you had this up back in 2010 when I ordered my first motor kit. Was finding issues shortly after a few months of running it. Namely how the bults holing the head and jug down started stripping out. Probably that it got too hot and the stress caused it. Glad to found this afterword though. Good way to keep informed for future bike motors.
My family & i, we are building 4 motorized bikes, we are glad to see your instructive, videos & experience, on trail, also, building these bikes, we are learning about them, thanks, say hello, joe.
Run them all 32:1 4 ounce of oil per gallon of gas and tune the carburetor and oil wise for cheap but good oil get a gallon of Walmart 2 stroke oil or get a gallon of Lucas semi synthetic
I spent the extra money and got the 4 stroke, as I planned on riding it to work every day, which I do. Over 100 mpg, fun to ride. Of course, people look at me a little funny when it’s 25 degrees out lol
4 stroke makes sense for longevity, plus the exhaust will be easier to deal with, 2 strokes rely on pulses to draw intake gasses. I want to build a 'stealth' bike that runs very quietly, so 4 stroke is the sensible option, plus you give good MPG figures, might have to get one.
The very first seeutek I purchased came with 6mm, the other 5 after that for building friends bikes were 8mm, never had any issues with any of those bikes.
Would you say there's a big jump in performance with a YD100 over an 80cc with the g series cylinder and 40mm stroke? Been researching kits and I'm torn between the two.
I bought a kit from Amazon by anbull and it was pretty good. The only thing that was defective was the clutch arm the pushes the pin, it wore out and I was not able to start my bike.
More importantly on motorizing a bike it’s crucial to do it to the right frame many bikes aren’t built strong enough to handle the tourque and stress the engines put on the welds and frames
Got my 66/80cc 2 stroke kit off ebay even upgraded from 44 to 36tooth rear haven't had any problems runs great an I'll get the one off ebay as well might try the 4 stroke kit next build or electric maybe
I just read that that the 100CC engines are actually only 80cc for some reason. I do like what they call a 100cc with the big rounded head fins, both on top, and around the sides. It read that that head provides less vibration. I just want a lot of low end power myself, for hauling, and going up hills, and I would be happy doing 20mph at full throttle, which is actually a good clip on a bicycle.
I've got a build so simple a cave man could do it. Carry a 225 pound man and gear over the rocky mountains. Drag a dead body out of the woods . No special moving parts. Available in the town you live in . I used it to go across America this year Florida to California and back. If fixing a flat is fixing your bike then that's what my build is like 👍
Very informative thanks ....I'm looking for a motor only for my delta trike and found the Wingsmoto 49cc suitable for my frame . I was wondering if you had any comments about this motor . Thanks again for your time and effort .
I bought the firestorm 80 kit. Worked great but all of these are gonna need a little tweaking and handy work. Not for the faint of wrenching or forum lurking
Kindly question what is the recommended engine type that work without paddle like normal motorcycle or like a vespa engine just switch on and move no paddle at all and swipe with normal steel pipe
I noticed you immediately saw in the pictures if it was an NT/Speed carb or not, im thinking of getting a carb upgrade that i dont have to spend much (if any) time to tune since i know next to nothing about it. How can i tell if i have a good carb already or not? They all look similar to me
Some one may have asked so sorry if this is a repeat question. How do I know how yompick the proper tooth number for the gear under the options? Thanks, great video!
Response to the BT80 Although the intake is not a traditional as all China doll motors they cast the intake and open it right up, it's an oval port design angling downward the measurements of the port actually is 42mm. The exhaust port is alot bigger as weel, but still accepts your standard off the shelf ebay and amazon clone pipes. Been running the BT'S for a year now and with no issues except a few broken studs ( 6mm) , now upgraded to 8 mm Compared to my Grubee 66 40/40/40 it's got more torque from low right through to the top. The BT100 is even more a torque monster, I can wheelie with a crack of the throttle 😊😁😂
Currently the motor just turned 4232km on it and still running strong,, I do not flog the hell out my motors, I run 36:1 synthetic oil with premium gas no methanol, never hold full throttle for long, and just simple ride it. Usual issues, carb leaks, plug goes for crap( carry a spare), chain breaks, clutch adjustments
wildcat pk80 from California Motorbikes. It's on sale right now for $120 too. A good first motor with endless mods available. Has been reliable for me www.californiamotorbikes.com/product-page/2018-wildcat-80cc-motorized-bike-kit-150mpg-35mph
Ive got the motor that the head and cylinder sleeve are one piece, yes a pain to mess with but it just keeps running. Got around 100 miles with no issue
I like how you referenced between beginner and somebody that has done this before I’m not an expert but I have dealt with these types of engines mostly two-stroke since I was about 16 years old and you are right somebody that’s just a beginner probably is gonna want something less maintenance I will also agree that a lot of the hardware in these kits does hold up pretty good but I will suggest trying to find something a little bit better quality just saying basic kit upgrade it yourself I recently put together a pretty decent bike it gets me where I need to go and my bike will run pretty fast just having a stock engine with a 42 tooth sprocket I believe not 100% sure But I also run a little bit bigger than 49 cc I would really like to here what you think about a 80/100 cc stock .
Since I couldn't find the yd100 I looked for the zeda80, in addition to the engine the site offers additional accessories such as the racing cylinder or the performance cylinder heads, in your opinion is it better to spend on these things or buy an exaust Did you go to the carburetor?
Years ago. I bought a racing 2 stroke motor. It didn't come with a cdi. It was wired directly from the magneto straight to the spark plug. The only problem I have is trying to remember who I bought it from. Have you seen or used a motor such as that. And if so? Where can I get one. And from who?
I love the information you give on your channel! I am thinking of possibly converting a Huffy 26 speed mountain bike. I might need to pull a fairly heavy trailer with it. I am considering the Wildcat PK 80 or the Zeda 80. Could you tell me what your recommendation would be between those, or if you have another recommendation? This would be my first build and I do need something budget friendly.
No one likes this answer, but you should ride the stock 44 and use the riding experience to decided if you want more top speed (smaller), or more climbing power (bigger).
I got the flying horse engine but I change the jug for a dio reed valve kit and an expansion chamber and now it hit 45mph at the beginning it top out at 30
Really cool resource! Do you have any recommendations for an engine and/or bike for a folding bike? Is it even possible to motorized a folding bike? I would love to so I could store it in my smaller apartment easily and take it up to the mountains. Thanks!
Stingrays are good looking bikes, but they might be be a good first build unless you can make your own mounting brackets, or unless you are using the newer style 20" stingrays like this. www.walmart.com/ip/Schwinn-Sting-Ray-Bicycle-single-speed-20-Inch-wheels/841993718 But they are a bit tricky to find in stock.
looking into getting a kit but also taking the pedals and pedaled powertrain completely as I'd mostly use it out of town, besides the obvious draw back of having to run start it could you think of any draw backs of this kind of design? (great vid btw)
13:05 powder coated motors always "suck" meaning they cause tolerance issues at every mating surface, therefore they create a vac leak..... and therefor the motor literally sucks air in from everywhere. will be running lean until she pops. if you can get her to run at all.
Other than basic tools, you will also want a 415 chain breaker. I would also recommend some low profile wrenches for adjusting wheel bearings down the road.
I Have The Firestorm zeda 80 best engine I ever bought I change the piston and cylinder head the starting of this month have not let it explode inside the engine because that's hard to do.
Will first used the ratio of oil and gas what it says when I when you get the kit I use 3.2 oz of oil twice into one gallon plus an extra little bit of oil because I ride in the Winter
Just starting to look at this my criterion are... 1. Not made in China 2. Used on adult trike 3. Works in wet weather. 4. Pull or electric start. 5. Less than 50cc. 6. Not too loud hopefully.
I had 1 more question. U said on the Motoos build the 44 tooth sprocket was a sweet spot 4 26" wheels. But u said here in the engine pick vid u said 44 tooth was better 4 27.5"-29" rim's r &26" rims needs a 36 tooth is better. So which is better. Not 2 b pickin. Just wanted 2 know 4 general knowledge.
For the low budget kits like the motoos, the 44T is a sweet spot. The Firestorm Zeda 80 has a number of upgrades that give it more power and can take advantage of the smaller sprocket :)
Very informative video. I am thinking of doing my first build and I am glad I found this video as there are soo many options to choose from. One question though. Is there a reason you recommend the Zeda 80 over the BBR tuning? If price is a non issue, would you say the BBR is the one to get?
The Firestorm has proven it's self for me personally to be a solid motor with good stock performance. I have not tested the BBR Kit, so I just can't say for sure. It might very well be just as good or better.
I'm between the Zeda 80 and the Silver Slant, currently $189 and $149 respectively on the bicycle-engines site. The specs look nearly identical. What would make the Zeda worth $40 more?
Great video. Great info. I might just need a softer seat for my bicycle in order to ride it more, but with the Lamborghini name on the side of frame, maybe a little 2-cycle noise is what it needs. BikeBerry BBR stock kit won out with the discount and free shipping. Will soon see if it works on this hybrid bike. Keep up the great videos!
I actually did a motor only range test a while back and got a little over 40 miles on the stock tank. This was on a bone stock motor. If my memory is correct that would be just about 80 miles per gallon. ruclips.net/video/uosxsA_eHdo/видео.html
im not sure what i should go with. the zeda80 or the phantom 85 gen 2? this isn't my first build, but im still not confident working on these things. the phantom 85 looks awesome from the reviews ive seen besides the bushing problems that would cause ring snags and catastrophic failure. not sure if they fixed that with the gen 2 which is why i think i might be more satisfied with the longevity and reassurance of the tried and true zeda80. but im looking for something with a little more pep like the phantom. i have a budget for possible upgrades like an expansion chamber, better chain tensioner, carb, and gas tank just so everything runs smooth and im not having gas leaks. my previous engine was definitely on the cheaper side: phillips screws on the casing, 6mm mounting studs, short intake, terrible tensioner that would come loose all the time, seals and gaskets were gone in a week, the whole spheel. i bought it when i was 12, it sat in my parents garage for 3 years, then i finally put it on a bike when i was 15. that thing ran for 2 years straight despite the seals being gone and having no maintenance whatsoever and it was never pulled apart in the beginning. to be clear it did not idle, it 4 stroked almost 100% of the time, and i had to pedal up to about 7 mph for it to maintain speed. but it ran. it finally lost compression when i lent it to a friend and he kept it flat out in 90 degree weather for about 4-5 hours around town. the crazy thing is it still wanted to run and would turn over trying to pedal start it. so these things have a pretty lasting impression on me which is why i think if people are considering those motors unreliable, then i cant imagine what the more expensive quicker reliable ones have to offer.
I never use the rag joint bolts that the kits come with. I use black Allen bolts, and lock nuts. Easier to tighten on the Fly because every bicycle multi-tool has a set of Allen wrenches on it
In this video, you mentioned various piston inspections that should be done on a new motor before installation. Do you have a video to show what to inspect? If not, is there a RUclips video that you recommend on this subject? Thank you.
I do not, but here is a good example of motor pre inspection. Good stuff in this video, but I have link you straight to the piston inspection section of the video. ruclips.net/video/qd7fXUgSixI/видео.html
I'd start with a Wildcat PK80 from California Motorbikes, or a Firestorm Zeda 80 from Bicycle Engines. There are more powerful options out there, but these are my two go-to motors.
@@keeganhache6667 Nowhere in your original comment does it say that. Nor does it even imply that... Anyways now that I know what you are asking I can answer. I don't hate the motor, nor did I say that... As I explained in the video, a $180 motor IMO is not a good value with a one piece jug, and 6mm studs. It is over priced.
Ive had 3 bbr stage 4 All of them were slightly different . One of them had really good crankshaft balance & is stupid fast The other two weren’t very balanced & vibrated Enough to want to change out crankshafts ....So I think it’s like playing the lottery.

@@zedee2000 any quality 100cc engine with mostly custom racing upgrades on a aluminum bike will definitely get you to 60mph
Thanks again and keep it up
Very informative and easy to understand everything the man says, this is good narrator and I can see this channel growing
Thanks for being the light at the end of the tunnel for me buddy Much is appreciated

I bought that first eBay kit. Unbelievably amazing. 8mm studs, great performance, and the g series head. Only issue is that the head nuts are stuck to the studs. Although new studs are cheap, and runs fine..
Thanks for letting us know :)

What motor is it? Was it reliable?
Seeutek makes some surprisingly good kits. I'm glad to see he talked about them
When I build for friends I exclusively use seeutek.
I ordered the f zero bike with dual brakes and the stage 4. Can't wait to ride
Let me know how it is I’m really considering that same kit
I bought a kit for 100 dollars on aliexpress and it is working fine so far
Good to hear :) Yes many of the cheap kits will do just fine of course. I hope it stay solid for years, ride on!
How long is so far?
How's it holding up a couple months in? I'm wondering because I'm cheap and will probably go the same route
@@tedtalour6414 bought one 6 months ago and daily ride it, break it in right and it'll probably last longer than the bike

Fantastic channel, thanks a lot for the effort you put into making these videos!
Thank you :)
And they will last
I spent the extra money and got the 4 stroke, as I planned on riding it to work every day, which I do.
Top speed is about the same, but the yd reaches its top speed noticeably faster.
@@LAHover Thanks for the info, ended up buying the YD.
I bought a kit from Amazon by anbull and it was pretty good. The only thing that was defective was the clutch arm the pushes the pin, it wore out and I was not able to start my bike.
Always grease the clutch cam, bucking bar, and bearing.
I want to go, category 1 one, keep us update, with, category 1, thanks. Keep sharing.
16:10 is the option selection just for the engine color, one being black, and the other silver?
More importantly on motorizing a bike it’s crucial to do it to the right frame many bikes aren’t built strong enough to handle the tourque and stress the engines put on the welds and frames
I agree. Even though I tend to use cheap bikes, the stronger the frame, the safer the ride.
@@LAHover whats a good brand or frame to use for a motor kit?

The 4 stroke flying horse?
Nice info! I am looking into get started with bike motor kits. How can a piston be upside down? Do you have any video showing something about this?
No upside down, backwards.
This can cause the ring ends to snag on the exhaust port.
Why is the BBR Engine Kit called 66/80cc? Which is it 66 or 80cc? How can it be both?
66 is the American standard, 80 is china. different ways of measuring displacement. If it's the 40mm stroke, It's actually 69.4cc to be exact.
@@LAHover Thank you.
Some one may have asked so sorry if this is a repeat question. How do I know how yompick the proper tooth number for the gear under the options? Thanks, great video!
Response to the BT80
Although the intake is not a traditional as all China doll motors they cast the intake and open it right up, it's an oval port design angling downward the measurements of the port actually is 42mm.
The exhaust port is alot bigger as weel, but still accepts your standard off the shelf ebay and amazon clone pipes.
Been running the BT'S for a year now and with no issues except a few broken studs ( 6mm) , now upgraded to 8 mm
Compared to my Grubee 66 40/40/40 it's got more torque from low right through to the top.
The BT100 is even more a torque monster, I can wheelie with a crack of the throttle 😊😁😂

Good to here :) ... My Motoos (with it's one piece jug) is also doing well.
What would be your recommendation for a motor for a electra rat rad cruiser converted into a trike?
I'm not interested in a two stroke any thing. So can you tell me were to find this information for four stroke engines. Loved the vid buy way!

This would be my first build and I do need something budget friendly.
what sprocket should you buy based on the tire size you run/terrain you ride? website link or math or straight answers, thanks! (36,44,48 tooth)
No one likes this answer, but you should ride the stock 44 and use the riding experience to decided if you want more top speed (smaller), or more climbing power (bigger).
I got the flying horse engine but I change the jug for a dio reed valve kit and an expansion chamber and now it hit 45mph at the beginning it top out at 30

would you recommend a 4 stroke or the electric start 2 stroke with the centrifugal clutch. Seems a lot easier to operate for a begginer.
I wanna build a reliable cruiser that can at least do 30mph but I wanna use a stingray chopper I don't know what kit fits it

I do not understand what you are asking. Please fix.
13:05 powder coated motors always "suck"
meaning they cause tolerance issues at every mating surface, therefore they create a vac leak..... and therefor the motor literally sucks air in from everywhere. will be running lean until she pops. if you can get her to run at all.
Hey what tools do I need to install? Would like to have that before the engine arrives
What about 4 strokes?

2. Used on adult trike
3. Works in wet weather.
4. Pull or electric start.
5. Less than 50cc.
6. Not too loud hopefully.

@@LAHover understood. Thanks for your insights.
I'm between the Zeda 80 and the Silver Slant, currently $189 and $149 respectively on the bicycle-engines site. The specs look nearly identical. What would make the Zeda worth $40 more?
This helps greatly! I'm overwhelmed.
What are these like on fuel? How many litres/gallons to the 100?
I actually did a motor only range test a while back and got a little over 40 miles on the stock tank. This was on a bone stock motor.
If my memory is correct that would be just about 80 miles per gallon.

im not sure what i should go with. the zeda80 or the phantom 85 gen 2? this isn't my first build, but im still not confident working on these things.
the phantom 85 looks awesome from the reviews ive seen besides the bushing problems that would cause ring snags and catastrophic failure. not sure if they fixed that with the gen 2 which is why i think i might be more satisfied with the longevity and reassurance of the tried and true zeda80.
but im looking for something with a little more pep like the phantom. i have a budget for possible upgrades like an expansion chamber, better chain tensioner, carb, and gas tank just so everything runs smooth and im not having gas leaks. my previous engine was definitely on the cheaper side: phillips screws on the casing, 6mm mounting studs, short intake, terrible tensioner that would come loose all the time, seals and gaskets were gone in a week, the whole spheel.
i bought it when i was 12, it sat in my parents garage for 3 years, then i finally put it on a bike when i was 15. that thing ran for 2 years straight despite the seals being gone and having no maintenance whatsoever and it was never pulled apart in the beginning.
to be clear it did not idle, it 4 stroked almost 100% of the time, and i had to pedal up to about 7 mph for it to maintain speed. but it ran. it finally lost compression when i lent it to a friend and he kept it flat out in 90 degree weather for about 4-5 hours around town. the crazy thing is it still wanted to run and would turn over trying to pedal start it.
so these things have a pretty lasting impression on me which is why i think if people are considering those motors unreliable, then i cant imagine what the more expensive quicker reliable ones have to offer.
The new p85 now comes with needle bearings. Solving most of its issues.
Do you have a reccomendation for what to buy if you life in europe, it would help alot.

I never use the rag joint bolts that the kits come with. I use black Allen bolts, and lock nuts. Easier to tighten on the Fly because every bicycle multi-tool has a set of Allen wrenches on it
What is most energy efficient and light high torque motor for bicycle? Graphene winding motor?

In this video, you mentioned various piston inspections that should be done on a new motor before installation. Do you have a video to show what to inspect? If not, is there a RUclips video that you recommend on this subject? Thank you.
