- On July 23rd, 1976, Weather Report performed at Jazz à Juan in Juan-les-Pins, France. Among a set of fusion classics was a 6-minute bass solo, one of the show's highlights.
What makes this solo so unique is the rendition of J. S. Bach's "Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue in D Minor, BWV 903: I. Fantasia." Although this piece has been performed on keyboard instruments since the 18th century, a bass rendition was virtually unheard of. Jaco didn't incorporate it into his bass solo routine until 1980, which makes this early rendition so interesting. It serves as a clear reminder that Jaco was already in top form by the time he joined Weather Report earlier that same year. Whether it's "Donna Lee," "The Chicken," or "BWV 903," he had learned it all years prior.
The bass solo gets back on track with the usual showstopper "Portrait of Tracy," Jaco's go-to showcase of melodicism until the late 1970s. It had been recorded for his eponymous debut album a year earlier, and was a frequent part of his solos until he and Tracy divorced.

Jaco was playing bass at that time like he came from the future... fantastic talent...
Pretty cool. Thanks for the upload.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this. No one compares.
I'm glad you like it, thanks for watching! :)
Indeed. Not like he fell out of the sky in 1976, his skills had been in the making for years. The Criteria Sessions pre-WR are absolutely insane by the way, and as we know it did not take long before Mr. Zawinul convinced him to have that first drink...
Well said. The Criteria sessions album is incredible, I hope the estate will issue more early recordings soon.
Thanks so much. I love these early Weather Report solos, there are a few of them on youtube at this point, from 76' to 79 and very often actually, he plays either most of the Bach etude of bits but he was using it quite often in fact. These solos are extremely valuable, as they showcase something that is, unfortunately, not nearly documented enough, and not recognized enough. Jaco was an improvisational genius...!!! Between the quotes and the pieces he plays, there are tons of incredible spontaneous ideas that are so intelligently and creatively played on the bass. To my ears his playing and his vocabulary sounds like modern classical music. This performance certainly showcase the truth about John.
Which other Bach etudes has he played? This is the only one I've recognized so far.
