Fun fact... at one stage Guy Lusignan and his brother captured William Marshall (murdering William's uncle at the same time) and held him prisoner for ransom. Eleanor of Aquitane paid the ransom (as he and his uncle had been escorting her when they were attacked) and as a reward for his bravery William became a Knight in her household which is where he was tutor in arms to the young Henry. The Lusignan's were basically a**holes but thanks to them William Marshall grew to be the Greatest Knight. The end.

Little correction at 10:57... The English did capture king John II of France at Poitiers, but they didn't get the heir the French throne prince Charles, the later king Charles V. John II had 4 sons, and the one that was taken prisoner and joined him in captivity was the youngest, Philip (who was 14 years old at the time). Philip gained the epithet 'the bold' for his courage at Poitiers, and was awarded the duchy of Burgundy, which he expanded and strengthened into a regional powerhouse.

Sir Robert Knolles or Knollys (c. 1325 - 15 August 1407) was an important English knight of the Hundred Years' War, who, operating with the tacit support of the Crown, succeeded in taking the only two major French cities, other than Calais and Poitiers, to fall to Edward III.[citation needed] His methods, however, earned him infamy as a freebooter and a ravager: the ruined gables of burned buildings came to be known as "Knollys' mitres". Her was a leader of a free Company.
