Mays was one of my Dad’s favorite players, and he used to rave about his playing and his personality to us. But I grew up in the late 70s and 80s long before the Internet, so I didn’t have access to footage of his playing and his life. At most there was a 10 second clip of him on TV that would show up once every few years during a broadcast. I knew he ranked highly in some stats and was one of the greats. But when the Internet finally became common, it didn’t occur to me to try to locate footage of him or of the other early greats from before my time. Not even the early greats of the Red Sox, which is my team, like Ted Williams.
I didn’t catch the MLB game in his honor, but I did see a RUclips clip of Reggie talking during the broadcast, which inspired me to search RUclips for Mays clips. I’m so glad I did - this video in particular gave me a great understanding of what a huge cultural icon he was in the 50s and 60s. It’s so stupid and sad that while to so much of the country, he was a beloved national star and hero, in some quite sizable areas of the country the majority of people still hated black people and blocked them from going into restaurants, hotels and most other places. While things have tremendously improved since then, it's also stupid and sad that any racism still exists in our country.
