I remember watching this video when you first posted it 9 years ago. I specifically searched for it today and enjoyed it even more than the first time I watched it. Thanks Damien. Keep the videos coming.
Damien, I’m going back to watch your vlogs from a while back as the weather’s still a bit iffy here in the mountains of Virginia to get out much yet, and I find your adventures inspiring. Really enjoy your sense of humor, videography, and humaneness.
Christopher Roberts If I had known they were there I would have went a couple of months later when the birds had left, still had a nice time though and cant wait to go back
Your videos are full of clear and watchable footage. (Many other camping videos are all jumpy and without continuity.) Thanks for making really entertaining and interesting videos of all your travels around Northern England. I enjoy your waffle and humour.
pleased you enjoyed it, I try to keep camping as simple as possible, I love sleeping in a bivy under the stars and a tarp if it rains, could never go back to using a tent, thanks for watching..
nice video mate, really should get yourself a life jacket tho, i fell in derwent water once, it was summer but the water was so cold i got a good shock and had my boots on so could barely swim, think the life jacket i had saved my life that day.
michael armstrong Yes good advice, there is always a risk of shock when falling into cold water and even though the kayak has 3 separate air chambers and unlikely to sink, theres no guarantee I wouldn't be separated from during an accident and fell into the water, Atb, Damian
Hi, great video, good that you respected the wildlife. I was at the very spot you camped on Tuesday. Kate and I spent a few happy hours in the 'cove' I was fishing but the only bite I had was of Kates delicious sandwiches. It was from seeing your video that I worked out where this spot is located on Ullswater. Also using Google earth. I was looking for a place with rocks I could cast into deep water. This place is ideal even though no fish. It was flat calm at dusk really beautiful. So.. thanks for highlighting this place. Recently moved to live in Kendal am looking forward to more adventures. I meant to take some pics of the 'cove' to post here, but forgot. Cheers man. jB
john b Google Earth is good for looking for new camping locations I use it a lot, there are fish in Ullswater but the water is so large the fish get lost in there, I've caught lots of perch in the past but no trout, the water seems to go flat before dusk, its happened a few times for me and is always beautiful, thanks for watching
Nice relaxing video, I'm sure you done the right thing leaving the island. The look what we found meals are really nice and like you I also bought them when they were down in price. Atb Glenn.
Thanks for your comment, those meals are handy and can be eaten cold or warmed up first and eaten straight from the bag, I don't think they are worth the full price but I am a bit of a penny pincher lol.
Ullswater is such a lovely place, unspoiled and not too commercialised, we're so lucky living up here in the North of England The Lakes are only a 2 hour drive away, thanks for watching..
Hi Damian, So glad to see you diid the right thing. I've been watching your video's recently as I have only just come across you, so I have now subscribed. The Lake District is a really wonderfull place "Once seen never forgotten" Keep the video's coming my friend. All the best Simon
I only live 100 miles from the Lake District and never really appreciated the place until I visited about 6 years ago, looking back I wish I had gone a lot sooner because The Lake District is a very special place, once visited it ignites a passion which lasts a life time, thanks for watching..
I enjoyed coming along on your trip. When I'm not out doing it, I'm drooling over those trips others have done. I doff my cap to you for moving on from the Geese. I would have done the same. Stay safe.
***** I wouldnt have been able to enjoy the trip knowing I made those birds abandon their young, looking back I did the right thing even though it was a bit of a hassle having to move on, thanks for watching
They are getting more popular and quite cheap in price, their main selling point is that they can be packed down small but I do worry about it getting a puncture, my mate bought the same model as mine and folded it right down fitting inside a suit case but it eventually split. Thanks for watching..
personally as your are the one that got me interested in wild camping I have to dedicate a lot of my gratitude to you and I guess this video just proves how fantastic and well thought out your videos really are man you are amazing keep up the good work Parky :)
Thanks for your comment, it sometimes feels like hard work taking along a camera to film the adventure and there are times when I feel like leaving it at home, initially it was for me to record, share with family and to look back on in future years when I was too old to get out to do it all, but its evolved into something more, if my video's ignite the spark and inspires someone to get out to the great outdoors and enjoy what nature has to offer, then I'm more than happy.
Fell Wanderer As you said it is hard work to take the camera out i have tried it a few times just camping on a local field and can never get the right sort of footage although i am only a young en' and need to learn more about filming in the outdoors maybe do a video about how to and the best times to film on a wild camp ? but thanks anyway man for replying and keep up the amazing videos!! Parky :)
Its a little more than just taking footage, a bit of video techniques/ skills, editing, content and other things, think of it as telling a story, plan and write ideas down on paper, things you want to say and want to film, if I have an idea about something that might be interesting I jot it down so I don't forget. Break the trip down into parts or scenes (remember your telling a story), a day in the woods could be broken down into something like, the arrival, activities and packing up/leaving. this is just an example and may sound obvious and simplistic but its handy for organizing clips into sequences for editing on a computer. I try and keep clips short, its helps to keep the story flowing without people getting to bored with whats going on, do a rough edit then trim it down making it more polished and refined. Always be on the lookout for interesting things to happen so you can film it like wildlife or a good sunset etc.. I'm no expert and my way might not be the best way but these are the things I think of, also look at other peoples videos, you dont have to copy them but they might use an interesting filming technique you wanna use in your videos like a timelaspe or transitions then search youtube for a tutorial, that's how I learned, a little music at the end can really transform your work into something special but dont have it too loud, what music you like might piss someone else off if its loud and distracts from other content in the video but that depends whether you made the video for you or others first. Hope I've given you some helpful hints, atb Damian.
Thank you so much man much appreciated tips and well for being amazing haha i will take on board all that you have said and try my best thankyou so much again Parky
Cheers mate, it must have been a big lifestyle change moving to Australia?.. not sure if I could do it, I love this green and pleasant land, well most of the time. Can't wait to see your next upload, atb, Damian
Gwersylla Cnau Nesting season restricts where you can go without scaring birds off their nests, I had to move on as I felt bad even though it would have been an amazing camping spot, Thanks for watching
YES,NICE JOB MY FRIEND WITH THE VIDEO AND MOVING FOR THE GEESE TO GO BACK TO TAKE CARE OF THE EGGS. YOU DO A GREAT JOB, KEEP IT GOING- GOD BLESS------ DAVID-
Sounds like you have a big kayak at 12ft. You should be able to carry more equiptment than me with my 2 person kayak, which is small and feels more like a 1 man boat with gear
@@Fell_Wanderer The only downside to mine is it's heavy at 33kg but i have made strong wheels for it ( from an old sack barrow ) thing is i'm 56 , don't get out much except fishing so it will be a big thing for me , i want to go for 2 weeks wild camping in the peace and quiet and lake . And i will get there :) my plan is for next summer :) thanks for the reply and keep safe
Ive always found worm feeders very effective for catching Trout on Ullswater, (will be using one next month as well as spinners). Also, ive caught the most fish at about fifteen to twenty yards from the shore, that goes for all the lakes everywhere there. Thanks again lad, hope that helps.
I caught lots of perch from Cherry Holm Island with a mepps spinner the last wild camp I did, it was summer time and the fish were more active, never tried the worm feeder, can we use maggots?. thanks for the tip, will try that next time.
cracking video mate,i really enjoyed that and I am very proud of you getting off that island and leaving the geese to their business, well done,i had the exact same situation whilst visiting an island on loch Lomond a few weeks ago.keep up the good work.Rich. p.s. get a lifejacket or the youtube police will be after you
Great video fella, don't forget your buoyancy vest when on the kayak, it's too easy to get into quick trouble without it. Good choice of name ! ;-) Just going to watch more of your videos Be safe buddy !
Hi mate, what knife is you have ? lovely scales on that handle. I'm looking for a new knife but spoiled for choice ! Did the sheath come with it or did you buy seperate ?
Fell Walker The knife is the TBS Boar Bushcraft and I did a video review about 12 months ago on this channel. The sheath came with the knife and although I didn't like it at first and planned to change it I've now warmed to it, although not as well finished and refined as some knives, it does offer good value for money for only £150 delivered which included a firesteel and DC4 sharpening stone. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone wanting a decent bushcraft knife costing half to what some knives are going for.
I felt bad knowing the geese would most likely abandon their nest so had to leave even though I had planned months in advance of going back to the same island I'd camped 3 years earlier, looking back I did the right thing, thanks for your comment.
Fell Wanderer Definitely did the right thing mate. Take my hat off to you :) Looks like you had an awesome time. You always keep me entertained so keep the vids coming! You going to the bushcraft show?
Thanks, I'm not going to the bushcraft show got other commitments, it seems to be a top event going off the chatter on here so let us know how you get on, maybe upload some footage, Atb Damian.
...@Fell Wanderer not all things go according to plan my friend thinking on the feet is the skill youll almost certainly need to survive the wilderness and great outdoors...However an word of caution for novices/beginners is in order especially as those Kayaks are cheap plentifull and easily obtained from supermarket shelves these days unlike owning an traditional Canoe which would probably mean you have some kind of proffesional training which incidentally i do have...Never ever enter an water course without an life jacket since it costs next to nothing but will prevent even the poorest of swimmers from the threat of drowning...Also personally i would never recommend beaching an inflatable on an remote island with the risk of puncture and if youd like to Kayak as i have with open sea experience then get real proffesional training because not only could it save your life but will prevent the lives of others to be put at risk should you need an rescue...There really is nothing more treacherous than water respect it and then you can really enjoy its experience...!!
Thoroughly enjoyed this my friend, you did well avoiding the geese to put your mind at ease but found a great spot there. Nicely filmed as usual pal, Atb ~ Ben
Thank you, I don't think there is a bad spot to wild camp on Ullswater, its all beautiful, just some places are near private property so I try and keep away from that.
+Little Bull Bushcrafting I fly fish sometimes especially in late May when the Mayfly is hatching, the best sport for trout fishing, when even some of the most shy and so called educated fish will loose all inhibtions and take even a badly presented fly so is great for beginners, its often referred to duffers fourtnight.
I'm doing the River Derwent this year on the fly' tight lines hopefully! I've got a shop full of gear for all areas in fishing, literally! Got unopened reels unused rods it's a terrible obsession haha. So pleased you left the island to tge Canadian Geese top man as there would of been many who wouldn't of. see me before you buy any new gear! I will probably have what your after
I was booked into the camp site at Glenridding for a few days and parked the car there. The lake is only a few minutes walk away. There are a couple of layby's next to the lake but parking is limited and you need to get there early. There is parking in Glennriding but you have to pay and display, not sure if its overnight parking though.
ullswater is a wonderful and beautiful place, no road lights, very quiet, nice place to chill n relax, stayed on ullswater near pooley bridge in sep 2014 and plan on doing same again this year, people are all very friendly too, amazing place for gettin out on the water or simply taking a hike or just sat all day reading a book and admiring the landscape, something for everyone and best of all no rowdy teenagers!! lol
Jamie Le'scot I like Ullswater because its not comercialised like Windermere, I prefer the top end at Glenridding with beautiful views of the mountains and from Place Fell/Patterdale Common, ATB, Damian
Ill be honest i didnt get to patterdale and such places only made it as far as howtown, i spent the week chilling with my kindle and playing on the lake, there wasnt a single day when it felt too busy, cant eait to get back up there.
It was a shame but the guilt would have got to me, the wind did pick up in the night so would have been a little exposed in the middle of Ullswater on Cherry Holm Island, Thanks for you comment.
nice to see you back bud,a shame you never got to sleep on one of the islands. and yet again nee fish HA. good choice of camp in the end. what you got planned for ya next one??
Thanks, I might do Kielder again not sure, the missus wants to go somewhere she likes for a change and she likes Kielder but it will have to be soon as the midges are starting to come out more now
Crackin video, ullswater is one of my fave english wild camp spots, and maybe if more campers did as good a job leaving no trace then wild camping might be more socially acceptable like it is in scotland, the few ruin it for the rest of us, well done for leaving the geese, your laid back manner comes across well, better than some of the ray mear wannabees who post
great video mate, some really good decisions, sums us wild campers up really, what sort of camcorder are you using, very clear picture and sound, I need to buy one and join this fantastic community
I have a Panasonic HC X900 and has 5.1 dolby digital audio which is a bit of a gimmick on an internal microphone, although the sound is ok for an internal mic. I have to stick foam over to cut down wind noise it has a x12 optical zoom with intelligent zoom to x23 without loosing image quality. 1080p cameras are becoming very affordable now so shop around, I fancy a Gopro hero3+ Black to add extra camera angles and they make a decent camera just on their own, As soon as you get started with your channel let us know and I'll take a look and subscribe, atb, Damian
thanks for the advice on the camera mate, will definitely let you know, now I need to find the time to get out lol, got a 2 night solo hammock camp sorted for the 4th July so hoping to post something on that, great channel Damian
How did you have footage of yourself leaving the first island from a camera still on that island? Then footage of you arriving on the second island from a camera already placed on that island?
I filmed myself leaving from the first island then went back for the camera. On the second island I arrived and setup the camera, then returned to the water and filmed my arrival. If the editing is done right you don't see behind the scenes, it all looks seemless from a viewers prospective, thanks for watching.
wild camping in my experience is best to set up late an pack up early leaving no trace that you were ever there. if you ask, they could always say no! if it's somewhere local that you will be returning to often it's a good idea to get friendly with the landowner though
I really enjoyed your vid, and the one where you caught the good sized brown trout. This might seem like a stupid question but do you literally just take your kayak down to the local river/canal or in this case the Lake District and paddle away, or do you need to get permission/license beforehand from someone?
P Hr to fish Not sure whether I need permission to use the Kayak on my local water but its ok in the Lake District, I have a rod licence for fishing which covers the Lake District and a permit which I have for my local river, Thanks for your comment.
One of my favourite videos of yours mate. What app do you use on your phone for the maps, as I'm planning a trip to ullswater myself for a solo kayak wild camp in the next few weeks and where is best to park near pooley bridge?
The apps I use are MM tracker and Alpinequest, both use ordnance survey .qct map files that work on both a PC and android devices. MM Tracker doesn't work properly on all devices so Alpinequest might be the best option. There are a couple of laybys on the A592 road west side of Ullswater, thats where I park but you have to get there early as there aren't many spaces. Parking at Ullswater is limited and for overnight parking I would pay to leave the car on one of the campsites and get someone to drop you off at the waterside. Thanks for watching, ATB
You are rapidly becoming one of my favourite youtubers Damien. And you are inspiring me to get out and do a spot of wild camping myself. I'm looking into buying a kayak also, is there any that you would recommend?? Thanks.
I don't know what Kayak is best but the inflatable ones don't last long and eventually develop punctures. Mine is a Sevylor Tahiti and they seem to make decent kayaks at a good price.
It is refreshing to see someone who respects nature as you do. Thanks for sharing your time in such a beautiful place.
It would have been better still to have seen the law respected as well, because wild camping is illegal in the Lake District National Park........
Got to salute you for not disturbing the geese while nesting Good on you. Shows we can all enjoy the outdoors together

Thank you for your comment it means a lot to me..
Great stuff. Another top upload, thanks
Love the videos mate but when your on water you should where a life jacket just in case something goes wrong 👍
Fair play to you putting the wildlife first....just as it should be! Another amazing video mate. Stay safe brother! All the best, Dave :)
Great camera work, Damien. It seems you o well whatever you put your hand to.
Would love too do this kayaking and wild camping , one lucky man Damian jammy get ya lol , keep up the gud vids marra. Atb Liam
Great watch excellent video such a shame you didnt get a catch at the end there to make it even better tnankyou for sharing this with us
Great vid m8. Good call on leaving the island
Thanks, It was for the best and I'm sure the geese were happy about it.
Hi Damien you inspired me to get into camping!
...@Fell Wanderer not all things go according to plan my friend thinking on the feet is the skill youll almost certainly need to survive the wilderness and great outdoors...However an word of caution for novices/beginners is in order especially as those Kayaks are cheap plentifull and easily obtained from supermarket shelves these days unlike owning an traditional Canoe which would probably mean you have some kind of proffesional training which incidentally i do have...Never ever enter an water course without an life jacket since it costs next to nothing but will prevent even the poorest of swimmers from the threat of drowning...Also personally i would never recommend beaching an inflatable on an remote island with the risk of puncture and if youd like to Kayak as i have with open sea experience then get real proffesional training because not only could it save your life but will prevent the lives of others to be put at risk should you need an rescue...There really is nothing more treacherous than water respect it and then you can really enjoy its experience...!!
nice vid thanks for sharing, and thanks for respecting the birds :)
feiz01 Thanks for watching
Thoroughly enjoyed this my friend, you did well avoiding the geese to put your mind at ease but found a great spot there. Nicely filmed as usual pal, Atb ~ Ben
Thank you, I don't think there is a bad spot to wild camp on Ullswater, its all beautiful, just some places are near private property so I try and keep away from that.
Enjoyable video, thanks for sharing it :-)
thanks for your comment
Great vid mate, thumbs up.
another great adventure Damian' do you fish with the fly as I hear it's good for wild trout through the spring.
I will probably have what your after
love it,were do you park your car to go and do this
I was booked into the camp site at Glenridding for a few days and parked the car there. The lake is only a few minutes walk away. There are a couple of layby's next to the lake but parking is limited and you need to get there early. There is parking in Glennriding but you have to pay and display, not sure if its overnight parking though.
Great video mate
ullswater is a wonderful and beautiful place, no road lights, very quiet, nice place to chill n relax, stayed on ullswater near pooley bridge in sep 2014 and plan on doing same again this year, people are all very friendly too, amazing place for gettin out on the water or simply taking a hike or just sat all day reading a book and admiring the landscape, something for everyone and best of all no rowdy teenagers!! lol
Jamie Le'scot I like Ullswater because its not comercialised like Windermere, I prefer the top end at Glenridding with beautiful views of the mountains and from Place Fell/Patterdale Common, ATB, Damian
Ill be honest i didnt get to patterdale and such places only made it as far as howtown, i spent the week chilling with my kindle and playing on the lake, there wasnt a single day when it felt too busy, cant eait to get back up there.
great place mate was in the area at the weekend. pity you couldn't get on the islands mate
Thanks for the comment, it really means a lot to me, thanks for watching..
realy enjoying watching yer vids mate, they have filled my last few evenings...brilliant....how much was the kayak...if yer don,t mind
Thank you.. the kayak cost around £80 about 5 years ago. They dont make them anymore but have newer models out. atb
good trip thanks for sharing
all the best . Stevie

Really enjoyed watching this video. Where did you park amigo.
Fantastic Damien 🤘
Thank you for another great vid!!!
Thanks for watching
Thank you for watching..
Excellent video ;)
Thank you
Canadian geese invasive species, good eating ❤😂😂😂👍
Surprise surprise the 2nd island had nesting geese too! Now you know what time of year to avoid 😉
great video mate, some really good decisions, sums us wild campers up really, what sort of camcorder are you using, very clear picture and sound, I need to buy one and join this fantastic community
If the editing is done right you don't see behind the scenes, it all looks seemless from a viewers prospective, thanks for watching.
just getting into wild camping do u ask the land owners permission or just camp n hope they don't spot u?
wild camping in my experience is best to set up late an pack up early leaving no trace that you were ever there. if you ask, they could always say no! if it's somewhere local that you will be returning to often it's a good idea to get friendly with the landowner though
Great video!
8 years late to the party 🤣🤦🏻♂️, cracking video, really enjoyed it
I really enjoyed your vid, and the one where you caught the good sized brown trout.
What kayak is that your using where can i buy one please
its a sevylor tahiti. they dont make them anymore but have newer models available. I got mine online, not sure where now. Google Sevylor kayaks, atb..
Magic stuff mate
You are rapidly becoming one of my favourite youtubers Damien. And you are inspiring me to get out and do a spot of wild camping myself. I'm looking into buying a kayak also, is there any that you would recommend??
Thanks.
I don't know what Kayak is best but the inflatable ones don't last long and eventually develop punctures. Mine is a Sevylor Tahiti and they seem to make decent kayaks at a good price.
Which Kayak do you use? love the video's mate. Hello from Leeds
+Paul Sheard Its a Sevylor Tahiti, they dont make them anymore but have newer models available, thanks for watching..
Brilliant - really enjoyed this vid as per :)
ATB
Dave
Thanks, pleased you enjoyed it.
What app were you using for mapping on the lakes? We got a brief glimpse near the start.
The app is alpine quest or mm tracker, can't remember which one I used on that occasion but they are good and they work with memory map .qct files
I very new to this all at moment, so just trying to find out what works from others.
I was last on that island in 1989.It hasn't changed a bit!
Love this vid very much
Thank you for watching
